To try to make a more exact distinction, I like to see how organic the sounds really are. Ambient often seems repetitive, but only from a surface level. Digging deeper in ambient, you get stuff that's like classical music, but instead of analyzing melodic and harmonic frameworks you're analyzing overall manipulations of sounds in general (in ways that are exclusive to electronic music.) You gotta listen attentively to this stuff and pick on these happenings that are more on a micro level rather than the macro level of most other music.

Ambient thread and not a single mention of Brian Eno... But, oh boy, do we ever get Aphex Twin.

I ran into this same problem when i got into ambient at first. Listen to more and you'll get an idea of what the music is about. It's all about atmosphere and texture. Good ambient should create a unique mood.
