>Plastic

Plastic nuts are the most common – even some higher-priced guitars have cheap plastic nuts. Plastic nuts are not very durable, and before too long, the strings will saw through the nut slots. Besides this, low-quality plastic nuts will kill your tone, especially your sustain. It is always a good idea to replace a plastic nut if you get a guitar that has one. Plus, the standard “rhinestone white” color of plastic nuts isn’t the sexiest look, and gives you just one more reason to replace it.
>>
>>70914293
This is not sexy
>>
>"High-Tech" Plastic

High-tech plastics are materials like TUSQ, Corian or Micarta. These are industrial materials with even, high density. They imitate natural bone in structure and color. The advantage of these materials is that they are artificial, offering the evenness of density without natural irregularities found in bone. These materials are used by a lot of companies, and I would recommend trying them. I can’t hear any differences when compared to a bone nut; I have a Micarta nut on my ’69 Fender “Pink Paisley” Tele, and I’m totally satisfied with it. Some luthiers claim that these materials are actually better than any bone nut – Martin has used Corian for some time. If it’s good enough for an expensive Martin guitar, it’s definitely worth checking out.
>>
>>70914291
I can tell that this was made at 20:50:40 whereas the earlier one was made at 20:50:20
>>
>Graphite

Black in color, graphite is also very popular, especially for guitars with a tremolo. The biggest advantage to graphite is that it is “self lubricating” for low friction. A good graphite nut helps with tuning stability in combination with a tremolo. Cheap graphite nuts, however, tend to kill your sustain, so take care to get the good stuff.
>>
>>70914313
This is pretty sexy. Is there something for edge lords?

>>70914330

>>
>Brass/Metal

Brass and metal were very popular during the eighties, and some companies still use brass today. It is the most durable, and will probably last forever, but it is heavy. Brass gives a very unique tone that you will have to try out to see if it is for you. The open strings can get very loud and shrill, but some heavy metal guys are into it because it helps the tone stay clear and defined when using heavy overdrive.
>>
>>70914338
>when people would chop the bottom link off because too many [embeds] made the post too big
>>
>Bone

Bone remains the “king of nuts,” and is the historically correct material for vintage guitars. Nothing is as sexy as a polished bone nut on a one-piece maple neck! The tone is very balanced and the open strings are never too loud or shrill, and it will last a long time. It is important to use unbleached bone, because it naturally self-lubricates, which helps you stay in tune when using a tremolo. Plus, cosmetically, unbleached bone can be polished to a higher shine than bleached bone. I prefer unbleached camel bone. It is comparable to ivory in tone and appearance, and has a very even density.
>>
>>70913921
>muh chink clones

u mad?
>>
>Fossil Ivory

Ivory is said to be the premium material for guitar nuts, providing the best tone. However, the material is questionable from an ecological point of view, and buying ivory is risking that an elephant or walrus is being killed for it. The only acceptable way to get ivory is what is referred to as fossil ivory. Fossil ivory comes from animals that died naturally millions of years ago and has been found throughout the planet. To my ears, it sounds warmer, mellower and more defined than bone. The difference is very subtle, but still audible. Another bonus is the range of colors, from creamy white to yellowish to dark brown. When polished, it can be breathtaking. Fossil ivory is not cheap, so you’ll have to decide whether it is worth it for you.
>>
>>70914293
plastic nuts are on higher priced guitars because "higher priced guitars" includes gibson, who are literally putting fucking CIRCUIT BOARD WIRING on guitars over $1000

not even import chinese shit has this. what a fucking garbage company lol
>>
>>70914386
Theres enough memes here to get my fix, i dont need more on my pedal board
>>
>Ivory

While real ivory offers a superb tone and appearance, I highly recommend not buying this stuff. It is forbidden in most parts of the world, but like most illicit substances, it is available through underground sources. As a matter of completeness I include ivory in this list, but I urge you not to buy or use it. Keep in mind, endangered animals will have to die for your tone.

>I prefer to tune manually, and besides, I don’t want perfect pitch—I like to “sweeten” my tunings.
This is actually a double myth. First, if you don’t apply power G FORCE™ is a manual tuner. The gear ratio is 40:1 so the tuning can be very precise (just don’t tune manually while G FORCE™ is turned on). Second, although G FORCE™ can tune to perfect pitch, you can also create tunings that aren’t perfect (like sweetened tunings) and save them as presets.

>When I bend a string, I don’t want it pitch-corrected!
That’s not how G FORCE™ works. You turn it on, it tunes, and it turns off automatically when the guitar is tuned. It doesn’t “run in the background” and try to tune your guitar.

>G FORCE™ is the same as Min-ETune™, just re-branded.
G FORCE™ has many additional features—like being able to use all the presets as custom presets, adding pitch offsets to strings, “pitch assist” that makes creating alternate tunings easier, the ability to work with capos, and more. Also several optimizations improve speed and accuracy, especially when switching to alternate tunings.

>G FORCE™ doesn’t tune all six strings as once.
This is partially true. If the battery charge is above 60%, G FORCE™ tunes all six strings at once. But if the charge drops below 60%, it tunes three strings at a time to make sure each machine head gets enough juice.

>G FORCE™ is for people who can’t tune a guitar.
Another partially true myth, because if you can’t tune a guitar, G FORCE™ can certainly tune it for you. But because G FORCE tunes six strings at once in seconds, pros use G FORCE™ in the studio where time is money, and on stage to keep guitars in tune and maintain a seamless performance flow (as well as to do alternate tunings without needing a bunch of pre-tuned guitars sitting offstage). Check out Premier Guitar magazine’s video with Alice Cooper guitarist Ryan Roxie talking about how he uses G FORCE™.

It's 2017 (LITERALLY the CURRENT YEAR). Why don't you own a Gibson® G FORCE™ guitar?

do i just need to tighten the screws in the back or is there a better way

More springs will tighten the movement up a bit but you'll need to readjust your trem claw.

Easiest solution is apply less pressure when resting your hand.

>>

A gig bag will protect it from dust and dirt. A hard case will prtoect it from damage, but you shouldnt be storing your guitar anywhere where something could fall on ot anyways
>>
>>70916264
>sound worse
Lol. They sound the same. They're not control panels, they take the place of wires leaving the pot to try to prevent it looking like a rats nest. Theres something to think about right now, the 2 people that have a problem with them dont know what they do or how they work.

If your logic was correct, then a 3pdt switch that was board mounted in a true bypass pedal would make you sound bad. Your amp with a board mounted jack will also sound bad. Its just copper, it doesnt matter if it's a solid piece in rubber or if its a splid piece over fiberglass.

Hi /gg/

I'm currently learning Holy Wars...The Punishment Due by Megadeth on guitar, which was a bit of a challenge for me since i've never really played Metal (well, not that type of fast Metal), so i chose that song because i like it and it seemed like a good starting point for this kind of songs.

After two weeks of practicing I can play the whole song fine, and now i really wanna learn Mustaine's solo, but it's really hard, and i've never practiced "shredding" (i never liked it so i never bothered).
I mean i know the scales used in the solo, which are pretty simple, but the picking is just way too fucking fast.

How do i improve on that ? Do you guys have any good lessons, videos or tips about fast picking, basic shredding, etc. ? I've watched GuitarLessons365's video on the solo but he's assuming you already have some kind of technical baggage on shredding, which i don't have at all

It's frustrating because the solo doesn't seem complicated as it is, it's just that i don't have the technique at all, and i don't know where to start

No it's pretty bad
>>
>>70920832
Slow it down, learn which parts are picked and which are legato, make sure you have proper picking technique. Learning to shred is hard, not because what youre playing is hard but because its a different mind set than other soloing, and you have to practice everything a lot to lock it into muscle memory.
>>
>shoegaze

Thanks !
Feels like it's gonna be hard but definitely useful for the future.
I've been working on this song for hours everyday for the past two weeks, i'm afraid i'll hate it before i can play it perfectly kek

The better you get at guitar the more you'll hate it.

This guy is a prime example. >>70921411

But yeah, the hardest thing about shred is grinding, playing the same things over and over and over
>>
>>70921432
Thatll work, they just need to be connected. Or a ring terminal/star ground
>>
>>70921358
Not that guy, but also break it into bits - don't try to master the whole solo in one go.
break it into section: a bar, half bar, a beat or even just two notes then start joining those sections together.
Keep it slow enough to no make mistakes -practice only makes perfect if you practice perfection, otherwise you're simply reinforcing things wrong.
>>
>>70921509
This, 100%

Practicing something the wrong way will result in you playing it the wrong way

Yes. Youll instantly feel better about your own abilities by interacting with these amateurs
>>
>>70914644
I borrowed a guitar with that for a gig a few months ago, it really struggled in a live setting. Ended up taking longer to tune the guitar because it kept picking up other frequencies and it couldn't tune the strings properly. Totally pointless - if you have a good guitar that is set up properly it will stay in tune fine and you can easily adjust it with a tuner pedal if necessary.
>>
>>70921466
>>70921509
Thanks, it's helpful

The thing is, both practicing slowly and learning sections one by one are kinda frustrating when you're impatient like me, it feels like you're not doing much. I know it's not true and i've improved on that, but there was a time not so long ago when if i still couldn't play a song perfectly after two or three days of practice, i'd just give up and find another song to learn.
So the simple fact that i've been practicing this one song for two weeks is already a great improvement for me

>The better you get at guitar the more you'll hate it.
I have about 7 years of guitar behind me, it's weird how during some periods of time i have no interest in playing and it annoys me, but these last months i've been loving playing guitar again, and i feel like i'm finally improving again, because for the past 2 years i felt like i couldn't improve anymore at all (i stopped taking lessons because i moved out)

feels gud

The more windings the easier it'll fall out of tune, especially if you bend or use the whammy bar a lot. I have 2 on lower 2 stings, 3 on the others and 4 on high E. Don't think it matters too much, but I have a locking system so I don't really have to worry
>>
>>70930119
Just put 3 on each.

I have Grover locking tuners and tune-o-matic bridge, and I used just 1 and my guitar doesn't stay in tune at all. Is there something wrong with my setup or do I just need more winds?
>>
>>70930136
That's nice but you should rearrange the end part or at least layer it with cool climaxing solo. But you got the basic structure there son. Now everything goes forward like a train - that's great but have something to break it up in the middle and then build up again and climax with a cool lead part then end the song.

Oh you gotta stretch the strings a bit if they're new. Look at videos of people restringing and if they're not dumb they'll show themselves stretching them. You won't need to loosen them or anything, as long as you don't pull too hard it should OK. You'll just have to tune it every time you use it until the strings kinda just stay in tune better.
>>

This is why I suspect there's something wrong with my setup because after playing with them for couple of weeks, especially my G and H strings are getting out of tune often, almost every 15 minutes. Also when I leave my guitar untouched for 24 hours it tends fall out of tune, D# or so...

I bought Dean VMNT (neck through, grover tuners, tune-o-matic) guitar off Amazon and found out that it has been manufactured in 2007(!). The original strings were bit corroded when I got the guitar and tone pot is scratchy - so I'm figuring this has been in cold/damp warehouse for fucking years.

Neck seems to be straight and intonation funnily enough 'ok'. I need to take it to guitar tech for proper setup but I have been too busy for now to do it.

Ironically I have had few very cheap guitar and they were staying much better in tune than this..
