Is classical music superior to popular music?
What albums/artists do you think are on the same level as the greatest classics you hear in the houses of old people?

>Is classical music superior to popular music?
not inherently, no
>What albums/artists do you think are on the same level as the greatest classics you hear in the houses of old people?
idk, pic related I guess
desu
Captain Beefheart - contrarian/surreal songwriting with novel production tricks
Pet Sounds - pop songwriting with novel production tricks
Joanna Newsom - novel songwriting & singing with modern production tricks
Aphex Twin - 100% studio production techniques with colorful chords/blips sometimes
Sigur Ros - same as pet sounds
Now tell me how this compares with music written before the invention of the mixing console/magnetic tape?

name 1 (ONE) lolsorandom composer
see, that's something (some) popular music offers that you don't find in classical
>>70893143
Stockhausen

>he can't into aleatoric music
fag
not that it's completely "random" anyway. i swear most people on this board don't know what that word means.
>>70893575
>>he can't into aleatoric music
What makes you say that?
>>70893594
well stockhausen wrote a lot of it and i feel people correspond it with supposed "randomness" when they're criticizing him
>>70893647
Anon asked what classical composers use randomness in their compositions, and I answered.

Yeah it's pop but there's a lot of complexity to Brian's songwriting. It's not typical disposable pop songwriting, dweeb.
to me this album is actually really inventive and experimental.
Grimes, as an artist, has really shaped a lot of music that has come around since her entry into the industry; take Death grips, for example, as they were inspired by her music.
the quality of the tones and the feel and texture of this album are miles above pretty much any electronic album that came before.
I have never heard classical played in an old person's house. Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra, yes, Waylon and Willie, yes and Duke Ellington yeah, but no classical.

some old folks like classical
>>70891938
classical music is just passed down conventions
it's nice when you're in the mood but it doesn't do much for me

I like most of these, but if your assumption is that any of these are even close to the melodic and harmonic depth of most western art music, you're grossly mistaken.
>>70895486
What is then? You should back up your points.

Nothing in the vein of popular music can be like that. Limiting music to short little sections that get repeated with little variation would lead to that. The closest we get in popular music, at least from a harmonic perspective, is the kind of progressions track like I am The Walrus (its intro at least) and Strawberry Fields Forever by The Beatles do. But even those tracks don't get to fully explore such progressions compared to the likes of Art Of Fugue by Bach (look up how the piece is structured and then listen to ALL of it.)
Popular music's limitations as a medium will never allow it to reach that level of melodic and harmonic complexity. But what it can offer are bursts of groove based rhythmic interplay (Trout Mask Replica though it does a weird take on it), explorations of combining unconventional timbres (all the other records in this topic), or delivering percussive visceral intensity lacking in classical music (most punk/metal/dance music records and some hip hop for example)
The best comes from popular music when looking outside traditional views on melody and harmony.
