Where does the hip-hop is dead meme come from? At one point did it actually die? Its "renaissance" is usually considered to be the 80s and 90s., but the 2000s saw great albums from mainstream artists like Jay-Z (Black Album) and Kanye West (College Dropout) as well as explosion of underground/experimental hip-hop in Deltron 3030, Busdriver, Saul Williams, Madvillainy, etc. Then in the 2010s, there are even more experimental artists (Danny Brown, Open Mike Eagle, Milo, Death Grips, etc.) as well as people like Kendrick.
So why did people ever think that hip-hop "died?"
