His career has a fair bit of variety in terms of arrangements, though his songwriting consistently touches on a handful of themes.

For the most part I think he's gotten better as a songwriter with time. His post-Tender Prey stuff is my favorite, and The Boatman's Call is his best overall, in my opinion. But if you like more aggressive loony antics check out his earlier work, including The Birthday Party. Murder Ballads and Nocturama are the only real stinkers in his discography.

Murder ballads is great though

I think it's kind of flimsy in terms of songs. There's good stuff on there, and the band is in great form, but I've always found it kind of grating and cartoonish in a way that wears thin quickly. It misses for me a lot more often than it hits.

>Tender Prey
>Murder Ballads
>Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus
>Dig Lazarus Dig!!!
>Skeleton Tree
>Soundtrack for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
>>
Let Love in is a good starting point. Listen to From Her to Eternity if you like noisy, dissonant post punk
>>
His voice is amazing

yeah i started with let love in and moved onto dig lazarus dig and the boatmans call
>>
I always really liked The Good Son, and i think thats what I started with. I also dig No More Shall We Part, both of these are apparently viewed as not exactly essential for some reason. Tender Prey seems to be an agreeably important one and it's fucking awesome.
