Halfway through day 5 of waiting on this in the mail. Probably will come Wednesday or Thursday.

Well I never said it was an ESP Viper. and I can't afford $2800.

That's a pretty good price though for a 1000 series. An M300 goes for about $900 and an EC-400 series is about the same price I paid.

You must not post here but once a decade. Its nothing but hate for the poorfags. Ibanez, esp ltd, pft anything not a gibson or fender gets hated on here.

But when someone points out the design flaws, pricing being obviously inflated, or they can play a cheap guitar better than you can play an expensive one, well, when the shoe is kn the other foot it's nothing but kicking and screaming. Can't handle their own bants.

otherwise just get a proper 6 saddle bridge if you pick a tele, and 500k pots if they dont already have em

Unless you play in a touring band or session on big records, the real ESP isn't worth it in my opinion. The 1000 series will serve you well and are pretty much as close as you can get to a real ESP for less then half the cash most of the time. Hell, even the LTD is stage worthy, a whole bunch of musicians use them.

>>70835729
Don't know what year model you had but lots of things have been fixed with the LTD vipers over the years, actually pretty much all LTDs in general. The locking tuner brand has been switched out, the neck dive has been seen to by relocating the strap on the base of the neck joint and the bridge hardware has also seen an increase in quality. The only bad thing I have to say about them is that the nut is a bit shit. Not exactly a hard fix. They're still made in Korea and they are still very high quality instruments that stand up next to the ESP variant. The sub-400 series are also excellent.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter too much so long as you are getting decent quality hardware. Nowadays, you can walk into a store and spend a couple hundred bucks and walk out with a decent guitar. Quality control has gone through the roof compared to say, the 90s, where as cheap guitar was a cheap guitar.

The law of diminishing returns arc has gotten ridiculous steep over the past 15 years and that's such an awesome thing to see. It means beginners can still get a great guitar for not a lot of money which will in turn encourage them to keep picking up the guitar and sticking to it.

It's a great time to be alive boys.

>>70835773
They hardly ship anything to Australia anymore mate. On top of that, the government's going to be putting GST on everything come June or July or something, so that's gonna kill getting stuff on the cheap from the yanks. Also, not a good idea buying used if you can't go there and test it out yourself to check the condition, in my opinion.

In about a week I'll be getting first ever guitar with a tremolo.
Specifically it's the Original Edge trem.

What are some things to know and tips and hacks for it?
>>
>>70837663
I stick an empty bullet casing under the trem when I do string changes. An AA battery works too. If you want to jam it and make it behave like a hard tsil, a stack of pennies and a little tape to hold them together works fine in a pinch.

There are plenty of guides to aid in setting the trem right. Isnt too hard.
>>
>>70837328
the locking tuners were switched out to worse tuners, the strap button is still on the back, so the dive won't be fixed(it's the same on mine), and the last two frets are still unusable(imo) and just knocking the neck pickup out of its sweet spot

otherwise, they did improve them by getting rid of those shitty compensated nuts. worst thing they ever did, fuck Earvana

Washburn XB105 with a modded bridge. Upgrading pickups then tuners next.
Ibanez GSR 200 got it as just a goofing off guitar to drag around and play on really. Took a cieling fan blade to the headstock and the electronics are falling apart.
>Current amp and pedals
Acoustic B450 MKII- still need to grab the extension speakers for it. Got it because it's loud and flexible.
Behringer BDI21- got it to try out a foot based pre- amp. It does okay at what it does but I know now that I need something with more tone shaping. But it was cheap so.

USA Spector XL 5 string and a MM Stingray.

I'm pretty okay at this point with my amp. I really want a Darkglass tho. Out of all the DI/Preamps that I've heard this one gives me boners even over the Sans Amp DI, and gets closest to my ideal tone.

You're paying for the difference in quality of the construction of the instrument, not the sound really. There are YouTube videos out there comparing Squiers to American Standards etc. and it's near impossible to tell them apart in clean tones. Even so, switch out the pick ups and they would sound the same. But the feel of the frets and everything would be much worse on the Squier.

Every time I tune up my high E string and play it for a bit it goes way out of tune again. I've never had this issue before and I can't tell if it's the string or the tuner.

I'm afraid to keep tuning it at this point, but I'll do so and report back shortly.

I've been tuning my guitar every day for years mate, I think I know how to tune it.

The high E string started to give out, it wouldn't go above C# even though the tuner was pulling it tighter. Eventually the string got too stretched out to withstand the tension and broke. I posted because I thought it was rather peculiar.

>>
>>70841105
Dunno about this specific Squier, but I heard a few people complaining about electronics on Squier being shit and malfunctioning.

As for the MIM Strat:
I rewired the whole thing.
Let's be serious, I don't think you need to fix it if it's not broken.

BUT you can do it if you want to plat around, or want to mod it.
My main reason was to mod it, look into it, & prepare myself before changing pickups.

What I did:

-I was annoyed by the bridge pickup not wired to any tone pot. And the stock ceramic pickup can be pretty ear-piercing.

While considering my options, I found 2 cheap TBX, & some paper in oil (probably snake oil) capas with the values I wanted to try.

TL;DR I first tone button is TBX for the neck
second one is TBX for middle and bridge

- Since I was messing around :
I added a push pull on the volume pot: it adds bridge pickup to every position
it makes a 7 way strat if I count properly.

I ended putting some solderless thingy for my pickups, and was ready to buy new pickups

Thing with 1980s MIJ guitars is the neck and body and fretwork are brilliant but the pickups are complete shit. I've owned four, this is my second E-series and they really need a lot of chopping about to be really good guitars. Plus the System 1 bridge is just unusable shit, hence the retrofitted Kahler which is the only half-decent bridge that will fit onto the weird Japanese body rout.

The new routing is for an internal Roland GK pickup.

Early rock guitar

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3FNLnFg6Ck

This song has the first instance of purposely recorded distortion. It was recorded in 1949. Generally Rocket 88 by Ike Turner is regarded as the first rock and roll song, this one not only predates Rocket 88, it also has a much more straight 'rock and roll' rhythm than Rocket 88, which has more of a lazy shuffle to it.

Other early distortion

First use of Fuzz

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAJQ415_TgY

1960, couple months before Grady Martin on Don't Worry. The fuzz in Go On Home was created by an actual circuit that an engineer at the radio station/studio created. Don't Worry is rumored to have that fine fuzztone from a blown transformer in the recording console and not from an actual purposed fuzz circuit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2WBBcH6OPU

Fuzz became a 'thing' in country music first after Don't Worry and started showing up on more stuff.

The first commercial effects pedal was the DeArmond Trem Trol 800 in 1948! Year before leos Telecaster prototypes...must have been for lap steels.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggtIvwKDtDQ

First instance of delay/echo seems to be on the Sun albums that came to be prerequisite in rockabilly, made by linking two Ampex 300 recording units.

Scotty Moore later had an amp made for him named an Echosonic that had a tape delay unit stuffed in it.

If you are on a budget, get a Mexican one. I say that as the owner of an American Standard, it is great but honestly having played a few of the new MIM ones there really isn't that much difference. As for amps, depend what sort of sound you are going for. I use a Vox AC15 with a couple of pedals and that wasn't too expensive, easily loud enough for gigging and sounds good at low volume too.
>>
>>70842262

Might be the first deliberately distorted guitar but Leon Termen used distortion in the Theremin in 1920 to clip the sine wave output to add more harmonic content to the otherwise boring sound.

Thing with headstock breaks is they only break once. A good headstock glue repair is actually stronger than the wood it's holding together. Plus it's such a fucking stupid way to break your guitar, you generally only do it once then you learn to be more carful.

Ive seen too many dead gibsons to buy that load of shit. Just like the old charvels, they develope cracks and split. The charvel typically split at the low E string, as Ive noticed during my searches for one without damage. Again the angle plays more to it than any impacts will. Its a design flaw that some companies have tried to correct. Adding more wood just causes it to delay and ruins the neck profile.

Conversely, I see a lot of Strats and Teles with cracks around the neck pocket on the body. Now, every ebay seller says

>it's just a finish crack, doesn't go through to the wood

>>
>>70843269
Actually this. Fender is pretty bad for neck pocket cracks. Ibanez too until around 2005 when they changed a few processes for body construction.

What it really is, the wood shrinks at a different rate for the neck and body, this causes the cracks there. Same how the frets spur out after time due to wood shrinkage. This doesnt really bother the guitar and wont just snap off like a gibson headstock, but do weaken the body and can split over time or due to impact or pressure or just age.
>>
>>70843291
Just once. Has a crack on the bottom of the body but it'll hold. I was moving into a new place and I dropped it as when I was moving around boxes.

Strap locks - dead easy to install and work wonders. I use the normal Fender straps on my guitars, and a padded leather one on my non weight relieved Les Paul

speaking of shielding, if you guys are ever hurting for $ this is the best way to go for shielding cavities for cheap

it is aluminum yes, and it will not solder well, but if it's for a cavity you can use brads/staples/screws to connect your ground to it so you don't have to worry about soldering it

Question guys, what picks do you use for shredding?

I've only recently got into trying to play solos, I'm originally a classical guitarist. I'm finding that shredding hard is wearing down my picks like nobody's business

My mate swears by Jazz IIIs for shredding but I've never picked them up because I've been an airy-fairy chords guy and hated the thickness of them, but are they good for shredding? I feel like I do need a weightier pick that can withstand shredding more, without wearing the fuck out

>>70844138
>classical guitarist
>using a pick for chords
Classical guitar is what I originally learned then I picked up an electric (and acoustic) for playing in bands and stuff, but I never learned how to play lead, basically. Whereas now I am trying to learn solos and stuff. Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica etc.

>shredding 30 after the fad is over

>>
>>70844286

>>

I also want to avoid Taylor because I've heard their bridges tend to crack based on the way they cut at the grain.
>>
>>70844305
I wasn't using the word in a very specific sense

Apologies if I'm using it too liberally

But SP / Metallica is the sort of stuff I mean right now. As I said I'm only just now trying to seriously get into playing lead stuff as opposed to rhythm / chords / finger picking stuff I've played before
>>
>>70844286
their thinner models are like 3mm bigger than most picks but it's mostly the size/shape/rigidity that i like, i was having cramps above my thumb on the inside of my palm from using regular picks and they helped a bunch

they're really expensive though, i don't care about the handcrafted shit, i want someone to make a pick that size for cheaper
>>
>>70844325

The Taylor 114ce does look pretty nice though... Especially with the walnut and sitka spruce.
>>
>>70844325
their bridges crack less because of the cut, and more because they make them in the worst fucking place to make guitars in the U.S
>>
>>70844315
Fair enough. I think I might get XLs if I get some though, I've tried a small Jazz III before and it just feels too small, like it's gonna slip out of my hands
>>
>>70844376
i traded half a beer for a jazz 3 with a grip on it. That might be something to look into. i still use it now, 5 years later haha.

never feel like i'm going to lose it. Bigger plectrums just feel clunky to me now.

You're talking about the really thick ones right, those Plexstrum ones?

Fair enough. As I say I don't wanna go that thick, I think a Jazz III should suit me because they're very rigid

Although at the moment I'm using a 1.5mm pick which is actually thicker than a 1.38mm Jazz III. To be fair the 1.5mm isn't wearing out as fast as the 1.2mm and 1.0mm that I'm also using a bit, but still, I just want something that is sturdier and withstands heavy picking better without wearing out.

>>70844396
I just found a 'max grip' variant with a grippy texture, is that what you mean?

And it's really lasted 5 years? Is that with heavy picking? I guess resistance to wearing down is the main thing I'm looking for

the joint used to attach a headstock at an angle on a guitar neck is not a scarf joint. Furthermore, solid joinery is stronger than the wood around it. It's the short grain in a one-piece angled heastock that gives out; joined headstocks are stronger.

Having sold and repaired guitars for 12 years. I have had to return so many gibsons in the first week from broken nuts and headstocks. Who needs commission anyway right.

Its a fragile design, and the string tension decimates the nut and headstock.

>>70844640
Scarf joints give out on the gibsons as well. They break above the nut typically but also below the nut around the scarf joint as well. Just a bad design point that didnt work like they theorized for tining stability, the angle plus the short area of pull with high tension cause breakages. Of course they cant change anything due to tradition so they pass the cost of returns and broken guitars off to the consumer.

Eventually, you experience poor quality and bad service from any company and lose that brand loyalty. I like a gibson, but they do have issues, which keeps me employed fortunately.
