Tablature with rhythmic markings is an infinitely more logical way to write out and read guitar music.

Learning to play by ear is an extremely important part of becoming a good musician. Not only is it an essential part of hearing intervals, harmony and cadence, it is an essential part of learning improvised music.

Learning theory is a boon to a musician with the creativity to utilise it. It's not a necessity though, and it won't make you a good musician if you can't use it well. There are tons of great musicians who never formally learnt theory.

using as a crutch though, maybe thats what OP means

>turning up your amp because you can't hear yourself playing
>practicing at a volume level high enough to require hearing protection
>take their guitars to a luthier to have the strings changed professionally
>>
tabs are only acceptable if you only play guitar, and don't ever intend to apply that music to another instrument outside the guitar family.

If you are a multi instrumentalist you'll realize really quickly why tabs are shitty notation. They're ok if all you can do is play a guitar and follow instructions. also you pretty much have to know what the song sounds like in terms of rhythm if you want to play it correctly from tabs.
They also wrongly assume finger positions and string choices. most tabs I've used and compared to a video of the artist playing, the tabs just are not the same.

proper notation is like a roadmap of the music as it sounds.
guitar tab is like a roadmap of your hand motions, assuming other variables like string tuning and fret spacing remain the same.
>>
>>70836017
idk man, for a long time i was uninterested in and avoided learning covers because i thought it was lame but im coming around to them. singing and adding your own ideas to an already existing song is actually pretty fun desu

tell that to transposing instruments
>>
>>70834519
Capos have a legitimate use you dumb fuck bare doesn't sound the same.
>>
>>70849326
You have all the necessary information on the staff.
The tablature is unnecesary unless you're musically illiterate.
Stop arguing over something that's been argued to death already, the only difference between a tab and a staff is that when playing guitar the same note is repeated several times through the mast andthe tab tells you directly one location of the note (usually the optimal one), something that is only an advantage when sightreading and even then it's arguable.

The wole purpose of tablatures are accesibility, they don't add any information and are only better to musically untrained people, anything else is you lying to yourself..
>>
>>70849326
The tabs are redundant.
>>
>>70847288
No they are shiity for guitar as well.
>>
>>70851275
>they don't add any information
>the tab tells you directly one location of the note (usually the optimal one)

Are you stupid or something?
>>
>>70851275
You can have all the necessary info on the tab as well if you want.

Sheet music delivers pitch information representatively. Tab delivers it as it applies directly to the instrument.
>>
>>70851352
You fucking retard, with the note written in the staff it's already telling you where you can find that note anywhere, the tab is only taking one of all these locations and removing ambiguity so the poor guitarist doesn't have to think or know his instrument.
Tablatures are fucking shit because they're completely mechanical, a staff writes notes and rhythms while a tablature only tells you what string and fret to play.
Instead of reading what note you have to play and then playing it you read what you must play and then what note that is, it's unnatural and one of the main reason why so many guitar players are no better than trained chimpanzes.
The whole purpose of tablatures is providing a mechanical way for guitarists to play music written in a document without having to actually read music, the reason they're looked down upon is because with necessary practice a staff is completely self-suficient and as fast.
>>
>>70851471
tab is easier to read while, if properly made, containing all the same info. end of story. your shit about playing the note then knowing what note it is or vice versa is fucking meaningless.
>>
>>70851471
So your only argument is "it's easier therefore it's bad." You realize that's not an actual argument, right?

>The whole purpose of tablatures is providing a mechanical way for guitarists to play music written in a document without actually having to read music
That is reading music, you absolute mong. You know what provides pianists a mechanical way to play music written in a document with only one possible note to choose from? Standard notation.
>>
>>70851468
>You can have all the necessary info on the tab as well if you want.
That's not a tab, that's a hybrid that takes the tab numeral system and merges with the rhythm notation of a staff, at that point is basically a staff that instead of telling you the note it tells you a fret/string combination where you can find it, it's still conceptually worse.

>>70851517
>tab is easier to read
Correct.
>if properly made, containing all the same info
Wrong.
>your shit about playing the note then knowing what note it is or vice versa is fucking meaningless.
Except it isn't, it becomes meaningful when you want to play an instrument that isn't guitar and you realize you can't read music for shit without visualizing notes on a mental fretboard first, slowing the whole process.
It's a process that's easier but fucks you in the long way because you'll become used to think of music in terms of a fretboard and a guitar, an unnecessary abstraction that will slow any musical endeavor other than mechanically playing a guitar.
>>
>>70851618
>That is reading music, you absolute mong.
No, that is reading where you should put your fingers to make the adequate sound.
>You know what provides pianists a mechanical way to play music written in a document with only one possible note to choose from? Standard notation.
Except they're still reading notes, and all teaching methods for sightreading piano focus on first visualizing the note and only afterwards mechanically associating the correct key to it, because the proven faster and better method to visualize music is by leaving the actual instrument-related specification for the last step, that way all the practice you do in reading or what you learn of music theory can be easily transfered to other instruments and you won't have mental baggage slowing you down.
>>
>>70851625
>you realize you can't read music for shit without visualizing notes on a mental fretboard first, slowing the whole process.

slowing the process compared to what? if you didn't know tablature you'd have nothing to visualize at all you fucking mong. your argument is that you should learn sheet music in case you have to learn sheet music.
>>
I can't believe there are arguments about capos and tabs. I can't believe that the people arguing are musicians, even amateur ones.
I will say it's more fun to figure it out for yourself from the sheet music than have it spelled out for you using tablature.
>>
>>70851771
>to figure it out for yourself
>from the sheet music

pick one

Holy shit you're dumb as fuck.

>>70851792

>implying I've ever heard the piece that I'm intending to play
>>
>>70851846
You're still having it dictated to you, you're not figuring it out >>>for yourself.
>>
>>70851897
But you are because you're figuring out for yourself the exact technique required to perform the piece. Thus, figuring out for yourself how to play it by utilizing sheet music.
>>
>>70851771
But reading out from the sheet music spells it out for you even more than a tab. Tabs just tell you where to put your fingers.
>>
>>70852124
I guess that's true if you don't know what sound your instrument makes when you put your finger there. And you've never heard the piece before. And in that case, you'll probably perform it wrong anyway because most tabs seem to assume that you've already heard the piece
So yeah good point I guess
>>
>>70836757
I fucking hate this mindset in rock music
I also hate cover bands with no personality

know exactly what you mean

went to a show one time, real nice venue, like the kind where they got champagne and other shit

get in and there's a guy with fucking brochures. He gives me one and its got a list of songs you don't hear anywhere anymore, let alone live since anyone in those bands have been dead for centuries

Then I realized that it was a fucking set list. For the next 4 1/2 hours I had to sit through some fucking amateurs give their "spin" on a fucking Bach single

might as well played Wonderwall on repeat, jdimsa

Literally no one knows what you're referring to

Hey /mu/ what are some really chill tracks? kind of like early gorillaz and their instrumental stuff but anything that has an old-school hip hop kind of feel to it that I can just sit back and listen to.

I can't tell if I just got punked for caring about art but I guess I expect too much for going on a website for people who jerk it to drawings of japanese schoolgirls
>>
>>70853859
music isn't art. i go to uni for composition and the only people that suck dick as people are the ones that think anyone gives a shit about the artistic merit of music.
>>
>>70853975
who cares what others enjoy and label as art, if you care what one person enjoys enough to deny it's merit aren't you contradicting yourself?

David Bowie covered Tonight, Wild is the Wind, Pin Ups
James Blake covered There is a Limit (as x approaches infinity) to your love, Sound of Silence (kinda sucked though)
Bach covered a few of Vivaldi's concertos

if the f was an f#, then it would just be a Cmaj7(9,#11,13) which actually does sound okay. but as it is the f against the b natural will make the chord sound like shit
>>
>>70837410
thats just a G7 with the 9 and 13 nothing hip or cool also its not a Dm and Em played simultaneously. maybe enharmonically but if you actually want readable shit then you make it easy to read and call it what it really is

God, it's filled with entitled teenagers who act like accomplished musicians, I rarely hear anyone playing when you call them out and when they do it's a lame begginer trying to show off. Off beat, off tune, shitty sounding stuff

This. The most prestigious and creative jazz leaders still play standards, or at least reinterpret them. Covers are especially good for new, young groups to get experience playing for a crowd b4 writing their own shit.

>this doesn't happen in any other genre
That's because in other genres the music itself has a lot of merit. Not so much in rock and its spinoffs. The only merit is originality

t.assblasted "guitarist"

you realize using a capo is the musical equivalent to using training wheels right?

If you honestly think that after listening to their first and third albums, you've permanently etched your name in the halls of plebdom.
>>
>>70864588
It isn't though. Just because you or someone you know uses a capo to strum a few chords doesn't mean others do the same.
