This thread reminds me of this old screencap of an /r9k/ thread where this guy was talking about how he cheated on his girlfriend and then felt bad about it and wanted to tell her. All the responses were from people crying about how he wasnt being sensitive to the fact that most people there were virgins and he was complaining about having sex with 2 different girls. They said it was really hurtful to them.

Whenever someone bitches about someone spending money on something they enjoy I see, "b-b-but anon, i cant afford to buy the things I want. It's not nice for you to talk about what you've got."

>>70815220
true. yea i have a thr10 which is pretty nice for a practice amp because it doubles as an interface and has a lot of decent effects built in, plus can go very quiet. but it doesn't react to pedals quite like a tube amp does and the speakers are so small it doesnt really have that thick sound you get from a proper cab. like, ive tried out a few really nice boutique overdrive pedals with it and they all sound like im just turning up the volume knob on the guitar, but when i try those pedals with even a cheap tube amp they all have very unique drive sounds

Wise double dubs of truth. But it's lost on the ilk that frequent these threads. Tone really comes from within, which is why great players sound great no matter what gear they use. Of course, it's nice to have quality stuff as you get more proficient playing an instrument, but it matters least in the end.
I enjoy playing my cheap Vietnamese LTD guitar more than my $2500 Les Paul Classic. Can't explain why, its made of crappier wood and has weak pickups and sharp fret ends. But i still find myself playing it the most.
>>
>>70815673
Assuming you are referring to an electric fretless bass, it shouldn't be too hard to get into. The biggest issue most electric bass players have when switching to a fretless instrument is with intonation and finger placement without relying on frets; coming from a cello, your ears should be more attuned to the instrument's intonation.

Keep in mind that regular round-wound strings on a fretless can damage the fretboard, since the vibration of the thicker strings against the wood can carve grooves into the neck. So use flatwounds unless your bass has a synthetic fretboard (like ebonol, which will resist erosion) or you're willing to regularly coat the damaged neck with epoxy or some other similar substance.

Index on 5 pinky on 8, and run it backwards with pull-offs

Then do the same pattern with middle on 6 pinky on 8, then ring on 7 and pinky on 8 (this one's awkward as hell until your hand gets used to it)

Make sure your fingers are staying low and close to the fretboard when they're not fretting, and try to keep your hands loose

Lets say hypothetically your dream guitar is the signature guitar of a famous guitarist. Being a signature guitar it usually costs around 3,000 to buy.
Lets say you found a used one on ebay that was never used or played and in completely mint condition for 1,500.

If that's your dream guitar and it's at a price you can afford, and you're guaranteed to never see it go for that low ever again, you'd be stupid to not buy it, right?

Now lets say this isn't hypothetical but the situation I find myself in right now.

Thinking of buildin something like pic related but with the capability of 6 guitars/basses. My only worry is how to make it strong enough to hold 6 intstruments, some are heavy as shit like the Thunderbird bass and the resonator guitar. And preferrably stong enough to hold 6 Thunderbirds, if it ever comes to that point where I sell everything just to buy Thunderbirds, which is very inplausible but still it needs to do it.
My wall is particle board so I also need to find the wooden pillars inside the wall to put the screws in. I believe they are pine, so is pine strong enough? The wall mount is going to be made out of birch.

Oh and I'm using angled wall mounts so the guitars will be spaced a little closer to each other so that will leave me with about 2 pillars.
>>
Type of wood doesn't matter, but make sure w.e you decide to nail into the stud that you either use big screws or plenty of small ones so you know it isn't going anywhere, also when you place the guitars up there you gotta be gentle EVERYTIME otherwise you risk putting unnecessary stress on everything
>>

Well wood isn't like cloth it isn't gonna just tear off, and the area affected is dense and small so it's not like it's gonna just snap either.

That's why a lot of stores just hang em up I suppose I havn't heard of anyones neck snapping from wall mount

>>
>>70820147
It's not going to tear off, but wood can warp

>>70820153
Unless for neck through guitars, you've got two parts in there, one's held by the handle and one's at the mercy of gravity. They're not held by the neck joint itself, but it's the area that will get all the stress.
But do what you want, I mean putting a small handle under the guitar would cost way too much, I understand.
>>
>>70815219
Day 5 of waiting for this is almost over. Bring on tomorrow. Probably will come Wednesday/Thursday.

I decided against a hello kitty squier when I saw this bad boy on sale for 1000 australian dollaridoos. They usually go for like $1600 so this was real cheap. I mean we are talking 401 series cheap. An EC-401 is going for the same price./ Crazy money.

Don't believe anyone who says a 400 series is a less shiny 1000 because they are wrong bros. They are just wrong. You won't have the swag. You can't just buy a 400 and think you are going to have the swag. Becuase you won't/
>>
>>70815577
Meh. It's really more about getting the kind of guitar that's right for you. I'll believe your shitpost once Eddie Van Halen starts using Fender Starcasters from WalMart.
>>
>>70820229
Welp either way i've never heard of that happening and wall mounts have been around for a long time if they were ineffective and detrimental to the instrument no one would use them so id say the risk is in the wall giving out now the guitar getting wrecked by it's on weight
>>
I'm sure someone has done this before, so what's it called when you're playing a B minor and you flatten your middle finger so it's hitting the 3rd fret on the high E string?
>>
>>70815881
That's not really helping the argument. You're simply more comfortable with your LTD and that's probably because you've had it and played it longer than your Les Paul. All that matters in the end is how comfortable you are with your instrument.

Gear are just tools to help you achieve what you want. But as with any craftsman you want good quality tools and a variety of tools. You wouldn't use a spanner to hammer a nail. Certain gear has specific jobs and recognising that is common sense. Also getting good quality gear is important too. You want the best gear possible in your budget to make your job of making music easier. I don't know why people are so antagonistic towards these sorts of opinions.
>>
>>70820927
>Certain gear has specific jobs
A guitar's a guitar, you don't see people having five different hammers just to put nails in planks.
>>
>>70820927
Craftsmen, build, repair and create. Theyre invaluable to our way of life, we'd be living in mud huts without them, there would be no transportation, no hospitals, no electricity. Blooze lawyers in a circle jerk do nothing for society, and I actually wouldnt be surprised if they neglected the needs of their wife and kids(emotional and physical) in doing so.
>>

So you do carpentry, and car diddling.
Not just one thing.

Also unlike hammers, guitars are highly modulable, the tuning can be changed really quickly, and same for the sound, since it's just an electrical signal.
>>
>>70820960
There are wrenches and allen keys of different sizes. The same tool may not be the right size or suitable for a certain job. Your analogy is incorrect. Also a guitar isn't just a guitar. Are you telling me a telecaster with rounds sound the same as a gibson hollowbody with flats?

>>70820960
>le blooze lawyer strawman

You are an idiot. Also a sense of craftsmanship can be applied to music.
>>
>>70820927
Yep, also good equipment inspires you to do more/better/longer, spend less time screwing with/le upgrading equipment and more time playing, and a lot less time fighting with substandard equipment trying to get things that ain't never gonna happen with that gear.
If you want to be a great tech, that's fine too, I've seen guys take pawn shop specials that weren't worth diddly squat and turn them into rather nice guitars. But in the end you still have a guitar that cost several hundred to build that's still worth diddly squat.
>I don't know why people are so antagonistic

Ive got 5 electrics, with the cheapest costing $800(used) and the most expensive being $1500(new), all different manufacturers

Ive got 2 basses, a 4 string that cost $1000 and a 5 string that that cost $1400

Ive got 2 acoustics that were both $1000 used, one has flats on it

Ive got 3 large pedal boards, 2 for guitar and 1 for bass.

Ive got 6 tube amps, ranging from full stacks to combos, cheapest was around $900. Also have a jc120

Ive got 2 bass amp stacks, one for playing agressive and one for playing smooth.

Dont even get me started on studio equipment. Or the beginner equipment i buy for half price, clean up and sell(ive got 4 blues jr in the garage im waiting to ship out tomorrow)

>>
>>70821440
It kight be cool to mess around with. Ive though about getting one and putting a weird tuning on it, like c#standard for the low 6 then 4th tuning after what would be the high c#, so so strings 1 2 and 3 would be 2 octaves up from 6 7 and 8. I dont play anything that uses an 8 string how it's normally tuned.
>>
>>70821440
Do you still want to play metal? You could always use the 8 string for jazz too. If you don't play either of these genres it might be best to sell it.
>>
>>70821513
8 strings also work for some classical pieces and you could use them for ambiant.

The standard tuning is
F#BEADGBE but a lot of people drop the F# down to an E.
I personally played a lot with:

(G# - C# ) G# - C# - E - G# - C# - E

it's based on baroque lute tuning ADFADF, an instrument I studied for a while. The bass strings I'm not sure about anymore, but you can change them to whatever suits your purpose desu.
Baroque lutes would have 14 courses, the tuning then being something like: ABCEFG - ADFADF
as you see, the bass is diatonically tuned, but depending on the model you've got, you can actually stop them with frets too.
>>
>>70821530

I'm a big fan of jazz and classical, but I only really have got experience playing lute music so I would have to catch up on a lot. I do know the theory well enough and I remember a lot of the guitar chords.

I don't know what I exactly want to make. mixing ambient with jazz, like bohren, and making it darker with distortion some times as done sometimes in the Only Lovers Left Alive soundtracks. Field recordings are neat as well.
>>
>>70821630
Since you have an experimental mindset just keep the guitar. You could try putting an 8 string evertune bridge on it. I'm not sure what 8 string pickups would be suitable for jazz. But some other anons may have good recs.
>>
>>70821530
I've never understood why people who like ambient music have such a hard time spelling it correctly
>>
Has anyone ever bought anything from reverb id like some feedback on it

>>70822175
They go for 500 from shit Chinese makers, but that's really not worth your money.

Depending on the model and the maker, they go for 2000-8000 euro/pound.
A 2000 one would be a simple renaissance 6-course, and 8000 would get you a huge-ass theorbo.

If you're lucky, you can get 'm second hand relatively cheap. You can also hire one for 20-30 a month.

I got my 14 course archlute for €2000 which was a very lucky deal because it was a leftover from a conservatory and they wanted to buy new instruments. I had connections with the school so they gave me discount etc.
>>
>>70821691
Yeah just keep it, try writing for it, and then make the mods if you need them.
For pickups personally I'm buying some Fishman Fluence once I'll get an 8, they sound really clear and well articulated.
For the bridge, the FX-8 seems good, evertune is a pain to install, and there's not really any replacement for the FX-8 afaik.

>>70821722
that's the secret, I don't really like it
but it's written with an A in my native language so I often make the mistake.

>>70822318
>If you're lucky, you can get 'm second hand relatively cheap.
considering it's already hard to find cheap second hand upright basses I wouldn't really count on the second hand market to get a lute.

The people who play these instruments are either professionals or very enthusiastic amateurs.
My teacher has something like 12 different lutes; different sizes, tunings, amount of strings.

The Lute Society, based in London, is quite big and I happen to have been to some of their meetings. The amateurs really only have the cheap models and most of them are old people who can not play at all.

If you're lowering the signal with the compressor then yes.

Distortion can only distort the signal it's given

In numbers

If your line signal is a 5, and you need to get to 8 for full distortion, then youll have a distortion that adds 3.

If your line signal drops to a 3, then the same pedal adds 3 you're only at 6

Turn up the gain on your compressor, but distortion tends to compress your signal anyways, since it works by chopping off the tops of your peaks.

Anyone else here ever play a Mitchell?
I got this particular model yesterday and I gotta say I'm digging it a lot so far, especially for the price. ( I have small child hands, no bully pls )
Though since it was a hundred bucks, the input jack had to be replaced in the shop ( So glad the luthier was there to hook me up ) And the nut has a buzzing sound on the g string and isn't flush with the neck, like there's a gap on the left side of it. I can take photos of mine if you guys are interested.
The ceramic pick ups on this think have a pretty nice output and they're pretty versatile.
For the hundred bucks it cost, I'd say it was a pretty good deal all things considered.
>>
>>70824422
absolutely, and a cheap licensed floyd would be even worse about it because the locking nut develops grooves from the string movement, since they're just made out of zinc and recycled cheap metals

It's a tube mixer to take a couple of preamps and a guitar processor and send all the outputs through one FX processor, mix the wet and dry signals then send them to the power amp. Mitchell guitars are Guitar Center's in house brand right? I held one the other day and it had a neat cut for the higher frets.

Is squier CV still good?

I bought one 5 or 6 years ago but then I had to sell it because I was too busy with classes.

Now I'm a NEET again so I want to start playing again, what's a good cheap beginner guitar?
>>
>>70825425
why buy a CV when you can buy a used mexi fender for cheaper? it will have better hardware too
>>
>>70825534

I live in a shitty third world country. It's really difficult to buy used stuff without being scammed here.
>>
>>70825425
Squire's suck. Get a mexi fender or schecter or something.
>>
could anyone tell me a sitation when you'd use Ebb instead of D ?

>>70825690
If you've got Db and want to flatten Eb, that way it's less confusing than having Db > D > F

So im joining the Air Force here in a few months but being guitarless would be the end of me, pretty sure i can carry along a midsized acoustic. Whats /mu/ reccomend for ~$800

You could use it as the root of an augmented sixth chord that resolves to DbM. So in Gb.

Now that you mentionned it, I never actually watched the damn thing.
I probably won't because shredding is completely dated and I don't really need to go faster.

To be fair, that probably constitutes a third of thrash metal.
>>
>>70826267
Wouldn't call virtuosity a thing that could ever be dated, ofcourse the neoclassical stuff like yngwie's is played out except for the absolutely phenomenal bands that are in japan's modern power metal scene
>To be fair, that probably constitues a third of thrash metal.
If you've heard the classics you should just listen to 80s and 90s tech thrash, there are a few vanilla thrash bands that are great though

okay thanks but

how do key signatures work?

i get that it shows the # or b of notes in a scale, then puts them in the beginning to show which key it's in.

but how does it show which notes in the song are # or b?
it doesn't seem to line up with notes at all which i thought it would

i drew a picture of what i mean but i think i figured it out - the b is on E, B and A so EVERY SINGLE E, B or A in the song is a b?

errr
>>
>>70823339
kill yourself please
>>
>>70826412
so going by what i think, it would impossible to play a normal E, A or B in this key signature?
>>
>>70826412
Wherever the flat or sharp is, the corresponding note is sharp or flat for all the different octaves also. A lot of times in notation I've also seen the individual notes with a sharp or flat beside it so it makes it a bit easier that way.
>>
>>70826412
If something is dictated by the key signature then it is that for the entire piece except where noted. If a is flat it is flat unless noted as being sharp or natural, if there is nothing next to it then it is flat
>>
>>70826329
Virtuosity itself doesn't age, but the application of it does.
Already explored tech-thrash, thanks for the tip though.

>>70826412
>>70826465
Accidentals at the beginning apply to every octave. If you put an accidental inside of a measure, it applies until you put a neutral in front of it again.
>>
>>70826412
>>70826465
if you're in the key of G, every F is F#, not just the Fs on the same line as the sharp symbol next to the treble clef.

If they want you to play an F natural, they will put a natural accidental on the certain notes that they want you to play natural.

Yes, unless they write a natural sign next to it, then it is a natural note until the end of that measure.

Sharps and flats are written on the key signature in the order they appear in the Circle of Fifths. It would help to get very familiar with the Circle of Fifths so you can know things at a glance like, "I see 3 sharps in the key signature, the key must be A major or F# minor," for example.

how common are natural accidentals?
or would it just sound whack and rarely used

Why are pedals so expensive?
>>
>>70826533
You can use them but don't dwell on them if that makes sense. They should be barely noticeable from going to one note to the other.

Anytime an accidental is introduced that isn't part of the original key signature, it tends to mean that you are stepping out of the key temporarily. This outside playing is usually stepping chromatically between two notes that are in key, to connect the two notes.

For example, play a C Major scale but add a G# in between the G and A note. This is just a chromatic passing tone connecting two notes that are in the key.

>>
>>70826599
Depends on manufacturer. Boss has marketing, legal, acquisition, distibution, manufactiring, quality control, overhead, employees, r&d, and other things going on. They can charge what they charge cause they can move in volume. Smaller companies may charge more because they have less people doing the same which takes more time. 10 people doing an hour worth of work each at $10 and hour to get a pedal from ordering parts to sending it out the door is $100. 2 people doing the work of 10 people will still take 10 man hours. Yhr difference is at the end of a 10 hour day boss will have 10 pedals to sell and the small company will have 2. The 2 people have to still turn a profit otherwise theyd need to find another job to survive.
