Can there be a best guitarist in history?
The top 100 rankings you see in those articles can all play anything, never mind the lesser known jazz and classical guitarists. Is the whole thing a meme?

No, those lists are great for starting discussion, but it's impossible to rank guitarists from wildly differing genres/ areas of expertise.
eg who's better:
Joe Pass or Marty Friedman?
or
Hendrix or Julian Bream?
or
Chet Atkins or Tosin Abasi?
or
EVH or Doc Watson?

Yes there can be. It's Hendrix by a long shot.

Hendrix couldn't hold John's footstool.

I agree he had talent we'll never see in our lifetimes at least, just curios if the likes of John Williams can be compared. Flawless technique and absolutely mastered the guitar.
Guess like the other guy said, you can't fairly compare genres though.

It's difficult, but he changed guitar playing and music as a whole so much that it can't be understated.

>Doc Watson
nothing ive ever heard from him made me think hes a special guitarist, and i used to love doc watson

No I don't think so, there are many ways to be a guitar god and no one person is best at every style
Every single one of those articles is trash tho, at least half of the list is spent justifying the inclusion of mediocre to bad guitarists that play in the writers favorite bands

>ere be a best guitarist in history?
not to our knowledge it's impossible

all the tone of Simon Says
>>70779276
There's flashier guys out there, for sure, but I just wanted someone who was the opposite of EVH.

what does that mean?
>>70779497
He has a shitty, overly processed sound in that piece
>>70779270
So did Jimi 2bh.
He was the first real guitarist to play complex riffs during chord progressions whilst singing all by himself, defying the standard rock structure of splitting into parts and phases. Some guy said he sowed the seeds of heavy rock/metal and I don't think he's far wrong.

I was talking about Jimi lmao

>Can there be a best guitarist in history?
No, because music isn't a race.
>>70779660
Oh kek
Williams developed countless discipline and playing techniques so he's just as valid I guess.
