OP, katakana is mostly used for foreign words, but they're also used in different fashions, depending on the context.
Katakana is often used to emphasize a word, similar to how words in all capital leters are used sometimes (like THIS).
Writting japanese words in katakana is just another way to write a word, it doesn't really mean anything special, it's just an aesthetic thing.
