I don't want to follow this argument, but I'm the liberal guy who criticized the name change, and here's the thing: the Viet Cong were a horrible group that did a lot of awful, violent things (not that that in any way justifies all the awful shit the American military did in Vietnam). However, just because of that, it doesn't mean you should change your name. Sometimes art should be offensive. The real post-punk bands wanted to be very offensive - Joy Division was named after the German women forced into prostitution by the Nazis, New Order was named after the Nazi vision for the world, the Gang of Four were named for Mao Zedong's circle, Fugazi was taken from the military acronym "fucked up, got ambushed, zipped in", I don't think I need to explain NoMeansNo... and IMO that was a very worthy tradition. It was meant to get you thinking. Sometimes people deserve to be offended.

Yeah, at least in the trendy indie sphere. Viet Cong only has one notable album, but it was the big thing for a while, so everyone following indie/hipster things like Pitchfork knows about it.
