As much as I agree with the sentiment and I see where you're coming from, I think that art pop actually deserves a separate name. The "art" bit is sort of like "intelligent" in IDM, horribly pretentious, but it's really the only distinction we have. Take for example Taylor Swift and Björk, two juggernauts in their field and both generally well received. The distinction is that Björk has a much wider range of experimentation and track record of creating ambitious works that would not necessarily please the average listener with the goal of self expression. Taylor Swift's music is however generally noted as utilizing well proven and tested songwriting methods, and a lot of of her tracks are co-authored by many of the same people that write for most other pop artists. Maybe I'm misguided and probably biased, though I don't mean to make less of Taytay & associates.
