Where do him and Elliott Smith rank in the list of great American songwriters?
for me personally, top 5
overall it hard to say
>>70482453
For me two and three behind Bob
>>70482385
can they really be great if at least 90% of the American population has never heard of them?
Behind Jeff Rosenstock desu
*blocks path*
Darnielle's second only to Mangum, for me, though I miss lo-fi, literary Darnielle.

I'd bet under 20% of the country at most has heard a Velvet Underground song.
>>70482616
BUT THAT ENTIRE 20% STARTED A BAND, MAN

mangum is talented for sure but darnielle has accomplished so much more
pic related, in his prime, is one of the best songwriters. Hopefully the new album redeems the last two ones.
also, Mark Eitzel of American Music Club is incredibly underrated
They're both in my top 5. I like you, OP.
I rate Elliott slightly higher, both are my top two.

some guy on rym i think it was said he heard some songs because he pre ordered early and it was their best material since 69 love songs so who knows
Where would Linkous fit in here?
>>70482641
This made my day, thanks
>>70483914
those songs he heard on on youtube and even spotify. Preorder came with one song from each decade
>>70482385
the mountain goats aren't even good
elliott is okay. Literally nothing special about either of their songwriting though. Listen to more music
Phil E > Kozelek > Elliott Smith > Darnielle

You're dumb. Elliott's chord progressions are fantastic and his production pretty unique, like the way he coonstantly uses double voice harmonies. Plus he was a fantastic guitar player.

mark is literally number 1 unironically
