Man, this is stellar ambient drone. It's hard to describe, but it's very ethereal and calming, while still sounding varied.
And for a record that's only 18 minutes long, it's the perfect length and manages to feel complete.

>The Work - Rubber Cage
This is the strangest thing I've listened to in a minute.
It's a Henry Cow side project, and boy does it sound like it.
By that I mean it's inventive post-punk with very strange sounds, vocals, and lyrics, while for the most part being tightly played and complex.

My main complaint is that it lacks structure and does not have enough energy to keep it interesting and it's only 37 minutes long, but it feels much longer. Some tracks are basic filler experiments, and so far the only band that can get away with that is the Thinking Fellers.
Perhaps with time it'll grow on me, but anyhow I like it enough as it is and it's worth checking out if you're into This Heat, Henry Cow, or even Captain Beefheart.

Kazuki Tomokawa - Gleaming Canyon
>Singer/Songwriter, Folk Rock

I really hate to rain on the hype parade here, but this album feels extremely melodramatic and disingenuous. I hate feeling like I'm being theatrically performed to, like I'm watching a campy play or something--same reason I can't into Nick Cave or Springsteen. It just feels like bad acting. And unfortunately, unlike Cave and Springsteen, Tomokawa does not afford me the luxury of memorable lyrics, what with the language barrier and all (not that lyrics really shore up my opinions on the two former though, they usually do more harm than good, but the possibility could've been there).

The instrumentals can be rad though. Can be. The guitar is usually pretty cool, especially on songs with furious strumming like "Azalea". There's occasionally a moment that showcases some extended technique on an instrument too, but buy and large it's either abused (the whimpering saxophone on "To the Dead Man", the violin on the first few tracks) or all too brief (the spiraling violin on the lengthy fadeout at the end of "The Keeper of Dreams" [which btw, seems like it could have been a cool jam had it not been so neutered], or the sputtering sax intro on "The Morning of Revolution" [which also quickly becomes annoying throughout the track]). But you really have to listen around that obnoxiously melodramatic violin for the first two tracks--hard to do since it's so high in the mix and panned so hard to the right or left, like a fly buzzing in your ear. The piano, while equally high in the mix and panned hard to the left, is pretty inoffensive, however present throughout the album.

Again, sorry(-not-sorry) about coming down hard on this album. And I think I get why people enjoy it, but I really just did not.

4-/10

your first paragraph is literally just "I'm not really feeling it desu". granted it's a strong stance and a strong opening statement is always good in this kind of review, but you need to proceed to try to pin it down to something, which you fail at entirely. the second paragraph seems at a total loss of focus, on any bigger point or an overall structure, and failing to give me an idea of the music's actual feel or sound - i mean when in the end your most convictive complaint is hardpanning, i mean, i know that can be annoying...

torts didn't say much of anything either but the enthusiasm he brought into his little review did a good enough job of selling it just by itself. the very brief descriptions he gives and especially tagging it as a novel combination of genres, Screamo folk are effective as well, and of course the setup which introduces him in association with familiar and beloved names. tbf you seemed to try this too but you could have listed any names instead of these specific two.

i'm sure of the victor of this rap battle

>Girl Band - France 98 (2012)
>Noise rock, Post-punk
Fantastic EP from start to finish. This thing has energy that never lets up. Great hooks, great riffs, not much more you can ask for in a noise rock album. First listen I just thought it was okay, but it really clicked on my second listen.
~8~

>Adult Jazz - Gist Is (2014)
>Art rock, Art pop
This one wasn't bad, but it was too long for its own good. The production was outstanding on here, and it was a little more experimental than what the first track made me assume. I personally enjoyed the more avant-garde parts of this album over the rest (which was pleasant but same-y).

And since when has a daily review not been either a two sentence bit or a rambling mess?

Jokes aside, valid criticism, but I'm just looking to express my feelings on an album, not about to perform a vivisection on the thing. I guess it is my prerogative to convince you all, the readers, of my opinion, but I think I'll save my dissertation and more repeated analytical listens for albums I enjoy more tbf.

>>70423731
Dolphy engaged in free jazz iirc, which was chock full of atonal playing, so to me it'd only be logical to assume Dolphy incorporated atonality in his playing. I can't be sure about Out to Lunch though. I'm well overdue for another listen though, so I could relisten and let you know what I hear I guess.

Imagine a neoclassical/post-minimalism album where track 1 is reminiscent of the art pop of Jim O'Rourke, track 2 sounds like a more modern Moondog, Track 3 is a percussion-heavy industrial soundtrack and track 4 is a beautifully flowing minimal solo piano piece.
That's this album, and it's astounding.

Gonna slap a 9 on it for now and give it repeated listens before an actual review.

Shinsei Kamattechan - Tsumanne
>Noise Rock, Noise Pop

God is this weird. How, though, is difficult to pin. On the surface, it's just layered noise rock and noise pop--lots of guitars and synths soaked in distortion and reverb--fairly straightforward. However, it's the execution which is just all kinds of weird. The melodies are just plain “off”, coupled with the disorienting layers (certainly not any worse than those on something like Loveless though) and the terrifying vocal effects, I'm just left with a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach. Actually, the male lead singer's voice is pitch-shifted up so much on so many tracks that it sounds positively girlish. I still have a hard time believing the singing is all male.

Weirder still, I kind of like it. Ok, I really like it. The songwriting is fun, the production approach to each song is delightfully unique, the rhythms and melodies are all catchy, and it's got that kind of guiltily delightful stereotypical Japanese cheeryness to it (super prevalent in the end of songs like my favorite track 3, "Michi Naru House" and throughout the vocaloid-reminiscient track 4). Track five is a crazy departure from the norm: a groovy dance pop number, loaded with glitch elements and a surprisingly catchy, though unintelligible chorus.

Track eight, “通学LOW”, throws caution into the wind, diving into a nearly industrial sound. Super pummeling, super demented, and super catchy. Track nine, “いかれたNeet”, starts out innocently enough but features some surprise screaming. Surprise! Track ten, “晴天脱力”, features a veritable collection of odd additions, including choir chanting, church bells, screamo vocals, and a whistling tea kettle, among shoegaze guitars and bizarre synthesizers.

Won’t spoil the 11 minute track per se, but it’s a trip.

A super fun album of noise pop and noise rock curveballs. It sounds like the band, or at least the songwriter, had a lot of fun too.

And I'm dropping down that Cigarettes After Sex single rating to 5-. Thomas is right, the lyrics are cringeworthy af, and it does kind of sound like Affection.

Stoked for the new album, but it'll be hard to top the EP.

Also dropping that Urban Bass rating down, if anyone remembers that album. The first two tracks are still mind-blowing, but the rest doesn't hold up.

Larry Levan - Live at the Paradise Garage (2000)
>disco, garage house

Disco really is incredible, so there are some amazing songs on here. Groovy bass, four to the floor drumming, incredibly cheesy but super enjoyable singing, every characteristic I love about disco is here and as such this set stays remarkably enjoyable for its entire 90 minutes. The DJing does leave a lot to be desired, though. Levan was an absolute pioneer, and you can't fault the DJing too much considering this was recorded nearly 40 years ago, but a lot of the transitions are awkward and the flow is broken up a lot more often than it should be. A modern take on this would be awesome, but as is it's still really nice.

3.0+

Jan Johansson - Jazz på svenska (1964)
>jazz

Incredibly subtle, incredibly chill jazz. Very minimalistic, in composition and performance style. Johansson interpolates a lot of Swedish folk melodies but brings a jazzy twist to them without ever making the pieces seem like mere pastiches. Johansson is only accompanied by a bassist, making the folk melodies the absolute focal point of the album, and they truly are gorgeous. This minimalistic setup does lend itself to tediousness, and it's a wee bit too short, but other than that not much to complain about. Jangle, if you haven't heard this, you'd like it.

Gonna bump with the almost-last of the reviews:

>Tangerine Dream - Force Majeure
A great soundtrack to floating away in space, occasionally cheesy but not really unwarranted. Far from a masterpiece, but a really fun prog electronic album regardless.
7

>Spacemen 3 - The Perfect Prescription
Though I do like this more than last time and I see what people enjoy in it, that same vision doesn't come through with me. I'm sorry but most of these songs feel super empty. The first two tracks are decent, but this pop-drone shit is in one ear and out the other with me.
5

>Funeral Party - Dream of Embryo
Fucking rad Coldwave/Post-punk output from Pafe, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite labels. By two of the members from Pale Cocoon, it seems these guys can do no wrong. I wish their stuff wasn't as hard to find as it is.
8

>Leonard Cohen - Songs of Love and Hate
A fucking masterpiece. "Diamonds in the Mine" is the one that seems to be the most hated by people but I LOVED this track. When Cohen goes through different timbres with his voice in a single song, it usually excites me a lot. This might not get as many relistens as his debut, but it will constantly be in my mind.
8

>Leonard Cohen - Songs From a Room
Also enjoyable, but that banjo shit gets annoying real quick and the B-side is extremely lacking in comparison. His most inconsistent and least good of his early output, but still has some amazing tracks.
6

>Leonard Cohen - New Skin for the Old Ceremony
Right in between the quality of Songs of Love and Hate and Songs From a Room. "
Chelsea Hotel #2" and "Who by Fire" are some of this guy's best. The tracks where Cohen shows the least emotion like "Why Don't You Try" leave a lot to be desired though.

>Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man
Hate on me all you want, but this is slightly better than Songs From a Room. Seriously, this New-Wave shit Cohen was experimenting with here you think would suck dick, but it fucking rules at times. Sure, tracks like "Ain't No Cure for Love" and "I Can't Forget" are some pretty big stinkers, but nearly everything else is great. Yeah, even "Jazz Police" is a fun, weird Cohen track. When Cohen stops taking himself so seriously, he can get kinda out there, which is great. Seriously, don't sleep on this one, but it's not for everyone.

Also, he's eating a banana on the front, which is the best fruit.
7

>Leonard Cohen - Live at the Isle of Wight 1970
Why this is so highly praised is well beyond me. The instruments are vibrant and full, and it's all recorded well, but Cohen is just really boring here. Pretty much every track is just the studio version but worse. As someone who was pretty excited to hear this, this was pretty disappointing.

>LCD Soundsystem - The Long Goodbye: LCD Soundsystem Live at Madison Square Garden
Warning: not for anyone who wasn't at one point obsessed with these guys. The instruments here are all slightly different than the studio recordings, giving each song a new, unique perspective that is different that what's heard on each album, and even low-rated tracks like "Freak Out / Starry Eyes" are some of my favorites for this reason. This album's two major flaws, however, are James Murphy being no where near as competent as a singer as usual, and the occasional recording scuff that comes from the bass being so high on many of these tracks. The later usually doesn't become a problem, but this dude made me so mad so many times during this album. Constantly he's running out of breath, missing notes, lines, messing up lyrics, and leaving backup singers to carry everything for him. What a joke. I get the dude is a chubby 30-year old hipster, but he seriously sounds like he needs a nap. The only track this really has a lot of impact on is the finale, "New York, I Love You..." due to how emotional he gets, which does bring a certain emotional impact to the ending.

Again, don't even attempt unless you are or used to be a big fan, because it's three fucking hours.

i love mingus. i think the best word to describe how his more experimental stuff sounds is "lurching." this record is absolutely massive, and it ebbs and flows with beauty and horror. as i was listening to this i was thinking, "what if mingus is the peak of jazz for me?", and i think i would be okay with that if it were true.

>>70423731
You'd really have to look at the sheet music or analyze the composition of his songs. I can see why you would think his music could be atonal or influenced by atonality because free jazz can sound very chaotic
>>
>>70434200
that's the thing, Out to Lunch still adheres to many of the conventional song structures of jazz so it didn't sound like Free Jazz to me, unless of course i have a bad definition (i separate Avant-Garde and Free Jazz). IDK about this stuff so that is why i was asking, but the whole album sounded like some atonal compositions i've heard
>>
>>70434492
Yeah free jazz can sound atonal but that doesn't mean it is. I think it's different from atonality where the composer makes an effort to not play within any key at all. Where I think jazz players are not worrying about whether they play within a certain key or not, it's just about free expression.

if Dolphy was inspired by Atonal composers like say, Webern or Schoenberg in Out to Lunch!

Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians
Philip Glass - Glassworks
Arvo Pärt - Tabula Rasa
Lubomyr Melnyk - Performs KMH
Harold Budd - The Pavilion of Dreams

Advanced:
Terry Riley - In C
Henry Flynt - You Are My Everlovin/Celestial Power
Tony Conrad - Slapping Pythagoras

Tabula Rasa and the stuff I put under advanced (mostly bc they are more long-form and more abrasive) are my faves of these, the rest is mostly really comfy and essential within the genre. Don't even talk to me again if you don't like this.
>>
We have a thing throughout the entire five year program in school that's supposed to be about "self reflection" in different modules. Tomorrow we have a seminar on a "life line", where we're supposed to present a timeline over our life and identify some happenings that have affected who we are today. I didn't prep yet, because really, what the fuck, and even more so, I don't know what level to present on so to speak. We haven't had proper instructions, so I dunno if I'm supposed to talk about serious stuff like my depression and suicide attempts, or more just fluff it out with a bunch of shit in school or whatever.

Fuck this assignment. Complete waste of time.
>>
>>70441370
well if you're supposed to identify the personality-defining moments on your life timeline i guess you could talk about the serious or impactful stuff like that, as well as less intensive but stretched over-time processes

like becoming more and more of a nerd through posting in daily or something, describing the build-up to some realization etc

if your tutor is any serious he probably doesn't want you to talk about how getting an A in high school changed your life forever, and if you're going to waste your time on it why not try and make your work amount to something
even if you think you often reflect on your past writing shit down can illuminate some stuff
>>
>>70441612
The thing is we're not just writing it down or even just posting it to our tutor, we're supposed to hold a presentation in front of half the class with this stuff. Like, 95% of the stuff that has shaped who I am today is fucking heavy and I legit can't talk about that with people I don't trust 100%. That's what makes this such bullshit.

Muhal Richard Abrams - Levels and Degrees of Light
>Avant-garde Jazz, Free Jazz, Spiritual Jazz

Featuring Abrams on piano and clarinet, Anthony Braxton on alto sax, Maurice McIntyre on tenor sax, Leroy Jenkins on violin, Gordon Emmanuel on vibraphone, Charles Clark and Leonard Jones on bass, and Thurman Barker on drums. Penelope Taylor contributes vocals to the first track, and David Moore opens the second with a poem. Nearly all the above are members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, or AACM, an organization founded by Abrams himself. Also interesting: this was the very first recording to feature Braxton (the track titles are in English, dw).

The opener title track is a skeletal affair, featuring waves of cymbal rattle and vibraphone patter, over which Penelope Taylor's ghostly wails. It's a haunting piece, but honestly feels like an intro despite the following track having an intro of its own: "The Bird Song" begins with a single hollow Anthony Braxton wail before opening into a simple but hopeful poem, incorporating passages seemingly dealing with the history of jazz, black pride, and art in general, but in impressively vague and poetic terms. The wall of noise that builds then is at once impressive and massive. Bells, whistles, bird calls (as the title would suggest) and every instrument listed previously fill the space with unbridled improvisation. Honestly the most impressive part of the whole deal would have to be the sound quality. All the instruments sound remarkably distinct amidst the clamour, even though the album was recorded back in 1967. Must've just been impressive natural seperation, considering they wouldn't have had anything better than 8-track recording (unlikely as it is, considering the Beatles only just got their hands on it in 1966). The giant wall of noise does create lots of super interesting sounds, though the distinctive quality really does wonders. Mayo Thompson, eat your heart out.

The closer, "My Thoughts are My Future, Now and Forever" is much more tame--still free jazz, just not the unforgettable sustained explosion that was "The Bird Song". Instead, this is a 9-and-half minute procession of lengthy intense solos transitioned by brief group improvisations. The cool thing is that the improvisation "transitions" keep building throughout the track, culminating in a shrill, epic finish. The drum solo and the bass duet are by far the standout solos, but Braxton's is cool too.

Really just an amazing experience, intelligent and fun. "The Bird Song" is really captivating.

8/10

wo, had to space this one out. Haven't had to multi-post in a while actually.

Also, unrelated, but upon relistening to Kairon; IRSE a few more times--though I can't remember if I posted that review--the back half really isn't as engaging or memorable as the front half. "Amsterdam" in particular is just some next level shit, so it's just really hard for the most post-rock tracks to compete, within the same album even. So bumping that 8 down to a 7 something.

Public Flipper Limited is the exact opposite of Ground-Zero's "Last Concert". In the former, a lot of great songs are being played by a bunch of drunk retards with shitty recording equipment. The latter, however, contains a bunch of slightly interesting but mostly boring experimental songs. The only really compelling piece was the second track. The live version of "Consume Red" is worse than the studio version and it wasn't even that good to begin with.

Whew, almost done with this bad boy.

Modest Mouse - Building Nothing Out of Something
>Indie Rock, Lo-Fi

I’ve grown to love Modest Mouse over the past few years, so there’s not much of theirs I could bring myself to criticize. Same goes here, it’s pretty fantastic. Despite being a collection of leftovers, it’s shockingly consistent. Tracks like “Never Ending Math Equation” and “Medication” are huge standouts and probably some of my favorites from them. I love the little sampling on “Medication” in particular, with the bird chirping and traffic/cars honking. There’s a handful of cuts on here that are actually on Interstate 8, so there was a bit of an overlap here. Anyway, very consistent, even if it isn’t their best.

3.5/5

Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
>Alt Rock, 90’s “we have to fill a CD” rock

Kind of talked about this before but I’m not a fan. It’s long, pretentious and stuffed to the brim with filler. I can see why people love this album because there's a lot of different styles and a huge tracklist - it just wasn't for me. The variety feels forced for some reason. While there are certainly some great tracks, they were surprisingly rare for a double album of this length.

Then again, I’m not big on the Smashing Pumpkins in the first place so that probably didn't help.

2.5/5
>>
>>70445516
Komeda Quintet - Astigmatic
>Avant-Garde Jazz, Post-Bop

A lot of post-bop wankery that reminds me of Herbie Hancock or Nefertiti era Miles. It’s kind of off-kilter and on the edge of being avant-garde but never gets excessively experimental. There’s sections in the title track that are straight up weird though, with solos that are just blaring trumpets or atonal saxes. At that point, it’s kind of too much for me - but that’s not all of the album. A majority of this recording has a bit of a spiritual jazz flair, with the pounding piano and splashing cymbals. It’s a style that I really have grown to like as I’ve explored the genre.

I’m not sure how to feel about it as a whole. The extensive trumpet solo on the title track is so odd, I have no idea if I hate it or love it. It feels so off. It sounds like he can’t take in a full breath and is forced to play in little bursts of energy. The rest of the album has a similar feel - the band isn’t quite diving full force into free jazz territory yet it’s definitely peculiar.

Really a puzzling album, with one of the more unique atmospheres I’ve heard in jazz. I’ll have to come back to this more and reevaluate.

in which i don't care for releases in genres i fucking adore

Frayser Click - Broken Halo (2007)
>memphis rap, gangsta rap

A very odd album by memphis rap standards, and that's not a very good thing. The beats rarely hit hard, they're good at slowly creating lurching, somewhat terrifying atmospheres, but good memphis rap does this while still managing to hit hard and "bang", the beats here just kinda move along without ever making an impression or really assisting the rappers at all. This is really shocking because (I believe) the production here is handled by DJ Sound, producer of Crime Rate Sky-High, so this is definitely a major step down production-wise. Some of the rapping here is really extraordinary, as a lot of memphis is, but some of the other rappers are just so fucking stilted and /slow/, which admittedly fits the production more, but it's just awkward to listen to. Despite how much criticism I have for this, I'm still massively in love with the memphis aesthetic, and this album's slow, lumbering take on it is really interesting, and the tracks that bang are really quite wonderful. By no means in the upper echelon of memphis, but a decent album nonetheless.

2.5-

24-Carat Black - Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth (1973)
>soul, funk

Muzak with a tacked-on concept. I love really tight, groovy, heavy funk, but this is more akin to Booker T. & the M.G.'s than anything else—decent enough but it rarely amounts to anything more than just background music. The concept is occasionally entertaining, mainly because the vocalists and speakers have a lot of passion and conviction, but it seems very forced, and it doesn't fit well with the unobtrusive music. It's alright, I guess.

Stars of the Lid - The Tired Sounds of Stars of The Lid
>Ambient, Drone

Boy this is lengthy but boy is it worth it. It’s soothing as hell, with very mellow ambient passages dominating the whole release. There really isn’t much of a change throughout the album, with airy synths and violins/strings serving as the dominant instruments. The transitions in each track are very subtle and slow, with each song blending into each other - but in a good way. Reminds me a lot of Tim Hecker, with little added details making the difference along the way. I’m not sure how often I’ll revisit this because it’s so long but it’s absolutely gorgeous.

the thing is i enjoy enjoying so much that i begin to enjoy questioning how much enjoyment can even bring about enjoyment and then there's the whole idea of the enjoyment of discovery

Hah, what are the odds. I can't seem to find a version that doesn't look like shit, but I suppose it doesn't matter.

>Lambchop - Is A Woman (2002)
>Chamber Pop, Alt-Country
Wow, I sure love this guy's voice. It's understated yet extremely powerful at the same time. It reminds me of late-period Johnny Cash a bit. "My Blue Wave" is a beautiful ballad, but I thought all the rest of the tracks were only average to decent and the title track was odd and out of place.

>Vladislav Delay - Kuopio (2012)
>Dub techno, Ambient techno
This is the first I've heard from him, but I do know that Sasu is a dub techno veteran. The soundscapes he creates on here are amazing. My main complaint here is that the majority of the tracks fit the same exact formula. It spends the first few minutes slowly evolving into a complex rhythm, but generally the second half of the track has little to no progression and stays pretty much the same. Still pretty damn good though.

next chart coming up

Definitely. It's a bit different from the previous. The tracks on there seem to have more structure than those on Tired Sounds. It's hard to say which I like more though.
