>The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Brian Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets
>""Art Rock"", Glam Rock, (Noise Pop?)

It's a shame I hadn't listened to this until today. There's a bunch of really cool tracks on here, and overall it's an amazing album. Eno's vocal stylings are occasionally very similar to David Bowie's, but Eno's songwriting and production are next level, although the mixing is admittedly a bit wonky.

I'm always a little conflicted when the opener is the best track. Not that there aren't a bunch of other great tracks (the wacky "The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch", "Baby's On Fire", the requisite Bo Diddley beat romp; "Blank Frank"), but they just can't compete with the proto-shoegaze bliss of "Needle in the Camel's Eye".

Regardless, I love the sonic experiments throughout though. I live for stuff like the 30-second stuttering noise jam at the end of "Dead Finks Don't Talk", the violent electronic-n'-vocal pitch manipulations in the bridge of "Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch", or the slinky string bending of "Some of Them Are Old".

Every track I hear I think "ok, this one's gonna be the dud track" but it never is. Imo the middle few songs are a bit weaker than the rest, but there's honestly not a single bad track here. Again, it's a shame I hadn't listened to this until today.

7+/10

Can't find it in high resolution, though.

Ordered this as a large poster the other day, and my gf says I can't put it up because she hates the film. Fucking pleb.

I've also been looking at some of the old Godzilla posters, they're dank as fuck. I'd really want the one from the new Shin Gojira, but the japanese text version isn't available in high resolution anywhere. Tried mailing Toho Studios, but the email just bounced, and I can't find another email adress.

Space Needle - Voyager
>Indie Rock, Dream Pop, Lo-fi

Really chill, 1995 indie rock stuff, slightly psychedelic, admittedly not very unique, consistently vaguely catchy, sounds like Dadamah sometimes or maybe a better Spacemen 3, somewhat emotional but also depressing in the malaise-y pointless feeling nothing way not the sad self-inflicting pain way.

Really makes you wonder what happens to bands like this that haven’t made a record since 1997—like do you think one of them has a wife and kids now and maybe the other guy is just lonely and either way they've moved in life and work at convenience stores or something, reminded by the monthly 10-dollar royalty checks that they used to be in a band that released a record or two that Robert Christgau reviewed and didn’t really like and maybe if they checked Wikipedia they’d see that nobody really knows about them or cares anymore and AllMusic hated the album too.

Wait nvm the singer has been in bands since and just got interviewed last May it's all cool.

small update
SOHN was an incredible lame and unoriginal pop/alt r'n'b mix that offered nothing but overused, overproduced style
You Me at Six - Night People was pretty lovely pop punk, but closer to alternative rock I guess. It gets sort of weaker towards the end, but still a solid listen.
and Ego Murda Sound was very enjoyable Outsider House (whatever that is) that went on for just a bit too long

>I was wondering if i should start getting vinyl now or wait till i get the record player
If you see a good deal or a rare album or whatever, sure.
>and if i should get vinyl versions of what i have on cd
Will you play them or enjoy them enough to justify their price?
I've been collecting for about 5 years and I used to grab everything that looks interesting, now I only grab stuff I'll definitely listen to enough to justify (unless it's a thrift store/cheap grab).

Do whatever feels right, you won't miss too much sleep wishing you didn't buy a record. Have fun with it, it's a learning process.
>>
>>70378798

Get a couple burner albums/singles that have very good stereo mastering to test equipment with; if all is fine, good. If something is fucked up, it is not a horrible loss if your vinyl gets wrecked.

CDs are easier to burn than vinyl, but if you are buying older vinyl it probably has better mastering than modern CDs thanks to shitty remastering. Also ripping vinyl will get you tons of leech on trackers if you care for that. And it has a warmer sound.

Vinyl can outlast most CDs if taken care of; most CDs are made out of really cheap material that has difficulty surviving for long periods of time. Older CDs and modern high end CDs are probably fine though.

Getting vinyl now or later is up to you; if you want a ton of stuff to try out right away, I'd do it now. But if you buy things and have no way to test it, you might end up buying a flawed pressing or something and be too late to return it.
>>
>>70378993
>Get a couple burner albums/singles that have very good stereo mastering to test equipment with; if all is fine, good. If something is fucked up, it is not a horrible loss if your vinyl gets wrecked.
?
When would your system be so fucked that it trashes an album? Do you accidentally set your tracking force to 5kg?
Maybe for learning how to use equipment it makes sense, but that's about it.

For testing the sound of new things for the most part; a good, well produced pop album in good condition will show the dynamics of something before you buy it to add to your setup / replace a part

I don't really expect serious hardware flaws wrecking your shit to be a real problem, but it's nice to have insurance anyway. You wouldn't want to run a favorite album on something Crosley tier.

>Will i be able to tell the difference between cd and vinyl when I play them on the same speaker ?
Yes, definitely. Even a clean record has some surface noise and interference, from scratches, dust, static, echo, vibration transfer etc.
That's why audiophiles can 'justify' spending $30,000 on pure gold cables and fake devices that 'trap the room signals'.
Take some time to learn turntable mechanics and anatomy, and audio setup. There are lots of good guides on youtube and the like, and if you have any questions you can shitpost here and I'll do my best to help you out,

Giusto Pio - Motore Immobile (1979)
>Minimalism

Very peculiar minimalism album. Uncomfortable, even.

This album features two very minimalistic pieces, varying in concept but agreeing in style. The low perpetual organ drone sets the platform for both pieces, the first overlaying sparse violin work and vocal humming; and the second a repeating spastic piano riff occasionally supplimented with a subtle note or two between.

While remaining heavily minimalistic, the album is still engaging, inventive, and follows a composed structure. The atmosphere is tense, uneasy and dissonant, leaving a cold feeling of discomfort. This is especially prevalent in the humming on track 1, almost as if the music is being delivered in a soft whisper before bed, creating somewhat of an ASMR effect.

Those not fully on board with a minimalistic approach to music should stear clear, but seasoned listeners to minimalism and ambient music might find something worth exploring.

Brian Eno-David Byrne - My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (1981)
>experimental rock, art rock

It's almost kind of jarring hearing a David Byrne project where he doesn't open his mouth, but I liked this a lot. It's certainly the sister album to Remain in Light in a lot of ways. Lots of funk/afrobeat influence; a very futuristic, synthesized sounds; and a general sense of anxiety that permeates every inch of the music. Not quite as good as RiL, because the funk is the best part of that album and it's definitely tuned down here, but the sample-based production is incredibly interesting and a nice way to compliment the more standard instrumentation. Some ambient tracks fall a bit flat (even though a few are pretty extraordinary), but I really like this.

3.0+

The Knife - Silent Shout (2006)
>electropop, synthpop

The vocals really do suck. They add a very comical element that clashes horribly with the cold, inhuman production. Karin Dreijer sounds like a discount Björk, and Olof Dreijer just has a completely unmemorable voice in every way. The production is a bit hit and miss, with some of the best-produced tracks ("One Hit", especially) having by far the worst vocals. They do strike gold a few times, like with the title track and "Forest Families", making for an overall good album with some pretty terrible musical choices.

Randy Newman - Sail Away (1972)
>singer/songwriter, piano rock

I'm oddly conficted about this thing. The more rock-based tracks really don't appeal to me at all, I hate the way Newman's voice sounds on these tracks and they just sound like some pretty crappy, generic '70s rock. Like Elton John without the theatrical vocals, basically. They still boast some great lyricism, but not even the best, most biting satirical lyrics can save a shitty song. The baroque pop tracks, on the other hand, are fucking extraordinary. On these songs, Newman sounds world-weary, which fits the lyrics and the melancholic, sweeping string sections /perfectly/. I can't heap enough praise on these tracks, but the fact that they're mixed with some really crap generic rock makes me yearn for an album just consisting of Newman doing baroque pop.

2.5-

Silent Shout is fun, but def overrated. If you enjoyed it to any extent, Shaking the Habitual is probably one of the best albums of this decade if you don't mind the longer drone/sonic landscape experiment parts.

Very hit or miss though. Really doubt you'd find it mediocre. Def a very love or hate album.

I need to revisit Shaking the Habitual. I pretty much hated it when it first came out, but A Cherry On Top and Without You My Life Would Be Boring showed up on shuffle, and I really dug them.
Still, if I remember correctly, the album takes a nosedive after Crake and becomes needlessly difficult.

Being going through my friends' ratings on acclaimed albums, and it's VERY interesting to see who consistently rates popular albums low, with very few things in common with either albums.

Like I'm not picking on people for just not liking Radiohead, but it's pretty easy to pick out try-hards this way.

Also this album was iffy but I'm just remembering how much I jammed to this song when it first came out:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfmXcIaN5aY

>>70380840
I wouldn't say it takes a nosedive really, but saying it gets difficult afterwards is mostly true, but the less experimental tracks are found throughout and very enjoyable.

Wait one more question because I can't sleep and people in my dorm are keeping me up:

When rating a single do you also consider the quality of the b-side, remixes, other content on the disc or just the single itself?

I see people give 10/10s or very positive reviews to singles that have shit b-sides/extras, and 90% of the time all I see in reviews are talking purely about the a-side. I mean, I know that's the main attraction and all, but shouldn't you take all the content on the media into consideration? Why would it make sense to only rate a single for half of the content on there? Would you rate an album by only its first 6 tracks and not the last 6?

Thread a dead but I'd really love to hear a response to this. Hopefully I'll wake up to replies.
>>
>>70384185
Yes, I guess you should rate all the content on the disk. However, most people probably don't listen to the non-a-side, they just want to review one song but to do that they have to rate the single in its entirety.

I don't know how to computer.

Nana Vasconcelos - Saudades

What a captivating album. It flows beautifully through tense percussive sections and serene guitar work, and never really slows down for anything boring. I would say it lacks a killer moment, but it's a crazy pleasant experience and super imaginative. I LOVE Cego Aderaldo. Jazzy yet somewhat reserved. Definitely checking more of this guy's stuff out.

Arthur Russell - World of Echo

Damn man, what an incredible experience. It's been a while since I listened to an album that both perplexed me so much and blew me away. I didn't know a cello could sound so cold, processed, and deadly. Songwriting is top notch, lyrics are captivating, and the riffs can actually be quite catchy at points. On top of all of this, Russell's voice is beautiful as well. It has traces of Nick Drake but has it's own distinct slur, keeping vocal segments from being dry. I've listened to this thing three times now and probably will soon. Awesome, awesome, awesome album.

Hi /blog/, I've been watching lots of Lynch stuff lately

His early shorts were alright; only Alphabet was really good.

Eraserhead was great. The baby was cute in it's own weird way.

Elephant Man was good, but there were a few parts that felt unnecessary in a way that detracted from the whole

I don't get the love for Blue Velvet; Dennis Hopper's character was great but the rest was not very good (even though I generally enjoy dumb neo-noir)

Up next is the Q2 edit of FWWM, which I hear is good.

Also, look at the meme video game man with the meme bird

Also, I completely forgot Kairon; IRSE were releasing a new album.
I'm not sure what to expect given the new single though, I wasn't amazed by it, but I like that it has a jazzy flair to it so I'm cautiously optimistic.

>>70386041
The drunken, slurred lyrics and the instrumentation in general is great. It's a varied take on post-punk, a genre that is filled with boring and derivative garbage.
I'm going to cherry pick here, but is there a song out there quite like The Lord's Favorite? It's a country flavored post-punk song sung by an aggressive dude from Denmark with a fake southern drawl. It's fucking awesome.

Fusion like any other trend that cached on would later have an effect in the aspects of the genre. For example, the use of electrical instruments, not just guitars but also electric basses and synths, or the use of rock style drumming in jazz.. Much jazz nowadays also has a more subtle and minimal fusion sound that ECM became famous for.

then explain nothing further but I am FISH and I also phrased my point like an asshole anyways.

What I meant is that fusion didn't "ruin" or make the previous established jazz canon any worse, nor did it (or could it) ruin the classics of the past.

I get the Zappa hate as someone who loves the dude's stuff, but people very often say laughable falsities about him.

I need to find it in the archive, but I remember seeing a review of Hot Rats by someone here stating Zappa was somehow both a"uninfluential/unimportant" musician yet somehow "ruined" a genre.

Or they're probably just memeing idk anymore and I'm also slow.

Dreamies - Auralgraphic Entertainment (1974)
>sound collage, electronic

Simultaneously ultra-hip and ultra-cheesy, and it deserves high marks just for that. The folk and pop experiments might seem a bit derivative and corny, mainly due to Bill Holt's hilariously wistful and over-the-top voice, but the sound collage and synth experiments are extraordinary, for the time period and just because they're really damn cool and well put together. They mesh very well with the organic psych stuff exclusively recorded for the album, mainly because most of the samples seem to come from psych records (I recognize an "All You Need Is Love" sample) so the two are just a perfect fit. Really cool, forward thinking record.

While i did mean it in a meme-y way, you are kinda missing the point if I was making it. The fact that jazz-rock did influence jazz in such a way that's minor parts of it are found in a huge number of current-day jazz releases could back up my statement 'jazz-rock is the worst thing to happen to jazz', which is in no way the same thing as 'jazz-rock ruined all other jazz'.
I don't like a single jazz-rock release I've heard, though, so if you have good suggestions, I'm definitely open to hearing them :)

>I get the Zappa hate as someone who loves the dude's stuff, but people very often say laughable falsities about him.

Well personally I'm not trying to criticize Zappa because I think he's a sellout or anything and he ruined jazz. I just don't like hot rats because of how ti sounds. I also don't think there's much jazz in it but I don't hate it for that either. It's to be expected anyway. It's not a Jazz musician adding rock to their music but the other way around. As a result, it's pretty different from other fusion stuff. And I don't think it's a bad thing that rock artists take influence from jazz, quite the opposite, but I don't like the execution, the final product.

I also think Zappa probably didn't make much of an impact in jazz music, the fusion scene overlapped much with the rock or funk scenes of its time. Many people in it were in it just for the fusion part and left after.

Also, I guess some of the hate on jazz fusion comes from the fact that before or after, jazz never got as big and the lack of any big trends after. I guess some people might see it as bandwagoning or selling out, and then the death of jazz but I personally think that's stupid. I don't see how jazz was to remain popular for sure had fusion not happened. I think the opposite, it helped jazz stay on the spotlight longer (I don't really see free jazz getting big, and bop stuff was losing popularity as well).

Besides, I part of jazz is listening to the sounds around you and adding new stuff to the music.

I like them both a bunch. But I don't know many similar records to at the helm and Heikyoku is more or less a dead genre, though as far as I know, Kinshi saved it from complete death.
There's also Biwa playing in one of the stories of Kobayashi's Kwaidan. Nice movie to be honest.

Zappa was for sure the first progressive musician, prog figures like Jon Anderson and Ian Anderson always spoke highly of him and cited him as a major influence. I would argue he was one of the first musicians to bring together as many elements that are viewed as "progressive" now into rock music moreso than any other rock musician before him. I feel like it's impossible to separate albums like Freak Out and Absolutely Free from the foundation of prog.

Then again, it's fucking prog, so who cares?
