I like it.
>>
Sounds really good. Better than I expected.
>>
>>70287285
ids preddy gud :DD
>>
something about the mixing is a bit overwhelming and not in a good way
but other than that, it's better than expected. I'm loving the sort of upbeat approach to their hazy sound
>>
Good, but holy shit is it brickwalled to all fuck. I can hear clipping everywhere.

The Oasis effect at work...
>>
>>70287332
Are you fucking serious?
>>
really excited for the new album
>>
>>70287363
What? There's definitely too much a modern "mix" job done on this track. Listen to something off of Souvlaki and then this and it's night and day. This is very heavily compressed.
>>
HYYYYYPE

>>70287328
I agree totally. It feels a lot more maximal than Souvlaki/Pygmalion, and it put me off a little bit at first, but I think this kind of driving upbeat sound is a good direction for them.
>>
>>70287332
it's on youtube though?

it's shoegaze it's supposed to sound disorted and lo-fi and be mastered as loud as possible
>>
great track
im excited now bois
>>
>>70287285
thank you
>>
>>70287373
How do you not expect clipping from this genre though? The db mix on this song sounds fine. You are right about the compression, however.
>>
for real though it feels weird being excited for the comeback of a band that disbanded before you were born, like I'm hopping some trend that I wasn't alive to appreciate

>tfw born too late to see slowdive in the early 90s
that pitchfork doc on souvlaki made me really wish I was in a different time and place

Are you serious? Listen to Loveless, Souvlaki, Nowhere, etc. No clipping or overcompression/brickwalling to be found.
>>
>>70287445
Shoegaze is supposed to clip though. It's meant to be distorted. Even Loveless clips. Prove me wrong. I guarantee you it does.
>>
>>70287425
I've watched the Pitchfork doc three times now, it's just perfect. Love the visuals and all of the clips they use. I really wish I could have seen them in one of those grimey venues in the '90s, but they seem great live now too so I hope I get to see them this year.

shut up faggot
there's nothing wrong with brickwalling limiting or compression or clipping/distortion in the mastering process.
>>
>>70287544
Nah desu it sounds overly clippy
I think its probably just a low quality audio file, slowdive have autistically mixed albums, i dont see them deviating from that now
>>
>>70287445
fuck off shit
it sounds great, go display your autism somewhere else
>>
I'm mildly concerned for the album since the mix on this is ridiculously narrow, but I'm hoping that's just an oversight on their part in the single release
This shit sounds too good to suffer from bad mixing
>>
>>70287558

>>70287563

>>
I literally just bought the song off their bandcamp to see the waveform. Honestly, it's pretty disappointing to see that they mastered it like this...

I put the 1993 CD version of "When the Sun Hits" underneath for comparison.

>>
I'm serious. Anyone have the lyrics?
>>
>>70287766
heavy compression usually swallows a lot of the details in the mix. there's a lot less variation in volume, so the subtle differences in volume that make most mixes sound lively tend to go to shit and (in my experience, idk if this has any scientific reason) layers that are lower in the mix get suffocated by the louder layers.
for a prime example, listen to the unmastered version of kanye's mbdtf (inb4 b8) next to the commercial release (one of the worst mastering jobs in recent history) - you'll notice a lot of intricacies that were basically drowned out in the final product.
>>
this mastering is garbage

mastering isn't a meme. if you have ever actually listened to unmastered music, when you adjust the volume the song sounds drastically different, not just louder or quieter but like a completely different recording of the song. I don't have a solid idea what the actual reason for this is but it's true, record some music yourself and you'll notice it right away

mbv.

and I predict probably this one.

My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive are both truly great bands that have it in them to do good comeback albums. Normally I'd keep my expectations low, but not with these guys.

Similarly, with television, expect good things with Lynch's new Twin Peaks season.

Good things are happening again. The world is alive.

We've had both a new Slowdive song and Twin Peaks release date in the space of a few days, I'm very excited!
>>
>>70288659
id say slowdives audience is bigger than ever, they werent that popular back in the day
>>
>>70288659
Shoegaze actually got more popular. There was a real backlash against it in the early 90s but it ended up sounding really good to people in the long run. Aged terrifically, which is to say that it almost didn't age, but life grew into it more.
>>
I need to listen to it a few more times but my first impressions are it's around what I expected but not as good as I hoped for.

Sounds pretty pleasant but kind of one note. Reminds me too much of all these newer dream pop bands that have been aping their sound in the 2000s.

blah blah mastering
I think it's great, really needed this after Lush's comeback fell through
and new Ride album soon too
>>
I don't like the melodies here as much as I love the rest of slowdive's songs but hopefully the rest of the album will be better
>>
>>70288829
Don't read that wrong - I like a lot of new things, though. I just mean that as far as older artists, I still believe in MBV, Slowdive, Lynch, and Swans.
>>
>>70288890
Did you believe in the pixies though? They had some great stuff in the 90s and they disappointed pretty badly with the comeback album
>>
>>70288874
That kind of sounds like them doing an impression of Galaxie 500. Love it though.
>>
>>70288890
>Good things are happening again. The world is alive.

when you say things like that it sounds like your world is alive again after only old stuff coming back
>>
>>70288903
Actually, no I didn't expect much there. But I'm not a particularly big indie guy, but I like the better shoegaze bands and some of the more neopsych bands of yore.
>>
>>70288914
Oh, I see. I have felt like interesting things have been continually happening over the years, whatever naysayers might have claimed, but I did feel like there was a certain something ... more about the sense to the feeling of history itself as a whole... that felt like a depression or a lag. Like excitement had waned. Now it feels somehow like some of that breath has returned. Probably for many, subtle reasons that I can't quite articulate. I don't attribute it to old bands, don't get me wrong, but I feel this in a lot of things. Like life seems beautiful again.
>>
I really hope they announce more tour dates soon.
So far the only gig they announced is in London.
>>
>>70288968
And I really hope they play old songs
>>
>>70288986
Oh, they will. I caught their return tour, and they played what you'd want to hear, as well as a lot of the really great tracks from their EPs.

And they sounded magnificent by the way.
>>
>>70287285
I like it a lot
>>
I hope there's some darker tracks on this album too, like Melon Yellow. Probably nothing as depressing as Dagger though - my only worry for this album was that some of its atmosphere would be lost due to a lack of teenage angst, but I'm really happy with this song and I've listened to it about 10 times

>>70288950
Don't be mean he's a sweet man and doesn't deserve that

>>70288947
I get you, it's been a long time since I've been this excited about a band or a TV show. I'm sounding like I'm wearing nostalgia goggles but most stuff I really love seems to come from the 1990s. I do think there's still good new stuff coming out though.
>>
>>70289017
Did they happen to play anything off I Saw the Sun.

My worry is that they will tour UK after the release of the new album and the show will mainly of material off that.
>>
>>70289047
>some of its atmosphere would be lost due to a lack of teenage angst

good, I want more adult melancholy, adults also feel worry and sadness you know

atmosphere is not tied to teenage years either
>>

>good, I want more adult melancholy, adults also feel worry and sadness you know
holy shit this
look at early red house painters vs. sun kil moon
>>
>>70289088
It's just something that Neil Halstead said in the Pitchfork documentary that made me think about this:
"A lot of Slowdive stuff was about atmospheres and so possibly, in a slightly teenagey sort of way it was about creating these cinematic moments"

You are right though, and I'm not really expecting them to make Souvlaki again
>>
>>70289076
>Did they happen to play anything off I Saw the Sun
that was just a bootleg and I don't recall anything off that. Although there is a lot of great stuff on there.

They did Golden Hair which was actually the peak of the show for me.

The part that starts at 2:02, as they play it like that live now, is one of my favorite things in shoegaze ever. It sounds/feels like King Arthur returning from Albion.

>>

>>

>>
I'm so fucking disappointed that the drums are literally the most generic bandcamp shoegaze song drums that make me think of indie rock more than alt rock, and that the mixing is done like shit since I can hear the details I'd love to hear on it but they can barely be heard or noticed. Similar airplane gaining height sound that is noticeable in Wonder 2 on MBV.

I really want to like it since Slowdive is one of my favourite bands of all time but it's hard when it doesn't even try to push out from the crowd of similar songs.
>>
>>70287485
Analogue distortion and clipping is completely different than digital clipping. Digital clipping sounds garbage while analogue clipping is actually used as an effect.

You don't want it to clip digitally at all because it sounds trash.

>>
Why are people so upset at the criticism of the mastering?

I love shoegaze, but this doesn't sound good. It sounds really "fat". It's like when you mess with an equaliser and turn the treble off.

I still think it's a fantastic song, but it felt a bit wrong.

Hello /r/indieheads
>>
Huge slowdive fan here and I'm a little disappointed :/

I can't imagine every track on this upcoming album being this disappointing though. After listening to all of the slowdive and Mojave 3 output, I've come across songs like this every once in a while. But, in every release, there are at least some songs that seriously wow.

I think they're playing it safe with this song to generate hype.
>>

Nice thread
>>
I think it's pretty bland t b h
>>
>>70287689
Don't see why you're getting so much hate. Mastering like that is bad for the music. Thankfully despite the waveform looking like ass it doesn't sound too too bad, at least to my ears. Compressed, sure, but not a clipping fest like some records.

It's a very good song too. I'm hyped for this record.
>>
>>70294633
Yeah that makes sense. It'd be silly to release your best song off the album as your lead single, because after that the rest would feel like a let down. It's like the last radiohead record, putting burn the witch out as a single was perfect because it was pretty good and got people excited but there was still several songs way better waiting for you on the album.
>>
>>70294501
what does this even mean?
>>
>>70295028
I'm guessing

>only plebs at /r/indieheads care about sound quality

What proof do you want?

I worked with Primal Scream (and by extension, Kevin) back in 2000 as an engineer and became friends Keith Tenniswood in the process.

When I talked to Keith at the tail end of last year I asked him about Kevin and, as most of you know, he's struggled with writer's block since after the first (well, technically second) My Bloody Valentine record Isn't Anything. Writer's block for Kevin isn't writer's block for anyone else. He's a perfectionist. It took a lot of pressure on him for m b v to even see the light of day.

He made the decision in 2014 to end his music career.
