lol this is honestly the worst place to ask this but i need a anonymous opinion: i'm opening my first show in a few weeks and i'm getting my setlist together, but a number of my songs are about sexual assault that i have experienced and could potentially be upsetting to abuse survivors in the audience. is it ethical for me to play these songs? i don't have a lot of material

>lol this is honestly the worst place to ask this but i need a anonymous opinion
your thoughtfulness is appreciated but this comment is not necessary
>is it ethical for me to play these songs?
yes. do not preface or apologize. the world is a terrible place to live in
depends on how the songs are written. like maybe itll resonate positively for the survivors BECAUSE they relate to it. that all depends on what the song is like
>>70221574
If you want to play it safe change the lyrics up a bit
If perspective of raper no
Rapie than I don't see any problem
They might even get hot and bothered reliving the experience
>>70221611
>the world is a terrible place to live in
Uhh... No it's not?? The world is a wonderful place, and I'm not afraid to live in it.
>>70221673
"No it's not" is a statement, not a question.
>>70221611
mu is not exactly known for being sensitive to assault survivors
>>70221630
the songs are relatively vague imo but are definitely catharsis for me and more about exploring negative feelings than resisting them so idk
>>70221654
yeah i might do this
>>70221680
Uhhhh, I don't care??? You're being REALLY pedantic right now.
>>70221574
what genre? could make a big difference
in general though, I would say go with it, it's ethical
>>70221574
>>70221687
How the fuck are we supposed help answer your question if you don't post the lyrics?
Post the lyrics.
>>70221687
You might not even need to change all of them, tweaking a few suggestive lines might make the difference, depending on what kind of show it is people might not be paying too much attention to what the song is about. What genre do you play?
Only if the music is good. Otherwise people will get offended and your subject matter will only be seen as shock value. Good luck.

It's a one man PornoGrind project

solo loud/soft electric guitar w jazz chords and singer songwriter tendencies i guess. categorizing music you didn't make with a genre in mind is hard but slowcore maybe?
>>70221725
fair enuf. i would but i know a lot of people irl who browse mu and would rather not be id'd
>>70221788
>fair enuf. i would but i know a lot of people irl who browse mu and would rather not be id'd
I highly doubt they'd ever come across your posts. Come on don't be shy Anon, we're interested, so indulge us.
>>70221779
good one
>>70221788
ehhh risky genre, likely to attract oversensitive people... just give a trigger warning before you begin?
>>70221574
Yes. There are three good approaches to it as well:
1) Be open about your experiences, what the songs mean to you and what they could mean to others in the audience. This is the maximum level of "safeness" you can provide but also leaves you the most vulnerable, be prepared for drunk assholes to heckle.
2) Leave out your own experiences but still give some sort of content warning. This is the route I'd recommend the least since it's most likely to come across as a pointlessly awkward moment. Probably minimal heckling though, unless you're pretty transparent about how it affects you regardless.
3) Call zero attention to any of it and trust people will be fine. This is where genre and lyrical style come into play, instrumentally-busy or word salad songs can easily go without anyone picking up the meaning. Nothing but quiet piano and singing? They'll probably catch on.
Honestly it's unlikely that people will be traumatized by a concert though, unless you somehow flip the tone into an aggressive anti-victim one. That would be quite a fuck up, probably don't do that. Other than that it's hard to go wrong, these people have to be able to get along out in the wild. There is a time and a place for special care.

You're an ignorant fool if you honestly believe the world is a wonderful place. Even if you have it alright, look past how lucky you are for just a moment and you'd have to be completely blind not to see all the suffering around you. "la dee da life is grand!" isn't a positive statement, it just marks you as a self-centered douche incapable of empathizing with others.
>>70221874
Goddamn you are a daft cunt. I was making a joke reference to the shitty band "The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die.
>>70221893
I don't care?
>>70221920
Obviously you do? That's why you wrote out a long response and are continuing to reply???
>>70221924
I fucked up, I'm sorry you all had to see this. Good night.
>>70221710
"uhh, racist and sexist much?"
that's how you sound in my head
>>70221993
Uhhhmmmm, excuse me? I think that was the point??
>>70221993
>>70222018
thanks for explaining yourself
>>70222028
It's like rly no problemo!!
>>70221853
this is good advice, thanks for taking the time to respond. no intent of being in any way anti-victim
>>70221924
do people still do this in current year
>>70221940
>>70221920
gosh guys
>>70221574
Who gives a fuck, art is about expression, and no one can tell you how to, or how not to express yourself.
Sing the fucking songs as you wrote them, and don't even think about prefacing them or apologising for it. Trigger warnings are retarded.
Not to be rude, OP, but stop being a pussy and just play it as it is. It's your own music, you don't need to change it to appease anyone.
>>70221574
Quit worrying so much about everyone else and practice self expression
The art you make should be the ultimate uncensored version of yourself, not some "sensitive to microaggression" trigger-warning-not-required safe shit
>>70222166
i mean it's not really microaggressive, it's potentially legitimately triggering to someone in that i am writing about rape and ptsd associated with it in frank and painful terms. that doesn't mean i shouldn't play it but i think you have an unnuanced view of how being "offended" works
>>70221574
Holy shit when did Tumblr start leaking?
>>70221574
WHERE ARE YOU PLAYING?
If it's a kid's birthday party, don't do it. Anywhere else you should. I don't know what your music sounds like though or what the lyrics are. If it's a music venue for playing music then you should. Honestly, you sound like a pussy and your music is probably safe and boring anyway.
