I know it's pretty dumb but I still think that the hair metal, grunge, and nu-metal scenes were all pretty shit eras of music. If you can call them that.

A big folly that particularly irks me was the commercialization of emo music. I guess you could say that it was inevitable, but it always seemed like an un-marketable genre. But somehow untalented bands were able to successfully co-opt an aggressive and punk derived musical genre and boil it down to it's most sellable aspects. Thus birthing the constant misunderstanding of non-music fans who can't tell the difference between separate extreme music genres, simply calling anything slightly heavy or any music with screaming "screamo." You forget the most important part: Rock in the late 70s had forgotten how to do radio-friendly singles. Everything had turned into AOR metal/prog that was not radio friendly nor danceable.

Record companies, run by the stupidest people on the planet, were rushing to sign as many disco acts as they could in the aftermath of Saturday Night Fever while completely failing to grasp that it was a fad that would soon go away. The rock world at that time admittedly was stale and filled with tired, past-it dinosaurs like the Rolling Stones and non-radio friendly songs.

Disco Demolition Night had several huge long-term repercussions, including the virtual banning of any group associated with disco from the airwaves, which of course included the Bee Gees, even though their primary sound consisted of gushy love ballads. It also resulted in a backlash against black music that lasted for years, aside from Michael Jackson and Prince, black artists were almost totally confined to black radio until Aerosmith collab-ed with Run DMC. Rick James's banning from MTV is possibly the most famous example.

Luckily as well, a new crop of bands that came along at the end of the 70s like Van Halen and AC/DC revitalized rock and ousted the dinosaur groups like the Stones. The early 80s was a renaissance for rock, with the concurrent NWOBM, punk, and New Wave movements.
