>Just defret a regular bass, it's not that hard.

Oh no, I've been down that road before. I am mildly handy with woodworking and agreed to defret a bass for someone for a small fee once. It was way more work than expected because the fretboard chipped quite a bit removing the frets dispite my best efforts to prevent that. Used the soldering iron method and had a set of wire nippers I ground down to the same profile as a luthier's fret puller pliers, ran a razer blade around fret edges too. Still got chips and had to do a lot of filling and finishing to get the fretboard back in to shape and re-radiused.
>>
>>70112697
If you're a noob and/or playing slow then it doesn't matter, but for fast and technical stuff everyone has reached the consensus that's it's better to not anchor. There are many great guitarists that do it, but the absolute best pickers, such as Paul Gilbert, don't.

It doesn't matter THAT much, but if you can change it, do.
>>
>>70112719
No, I use the regular, funny you don't like it, it's one of my favorites, its a little sensitive but once you get used to it you can build up a nice lay of echo, and I use it with a phaser which really brings it out

It was a frankenbass the guy had cobbled together from various sundry parts of unknown origin. I suspect the main problem was the ebony fretboard. Ebony has a tendency to flake off and chip under stress in ways you probably wouldn't get with a softer material like rosewood.

Affordable: TC electronic spectracomp. It's just as good as more expensive compressors except that adjusting it involves pugging a usb cable and fiddling with the firmware (tc has a dedicated program for it). Also has to be plugged in, no space inside for battery. If you don't mind those two things, this blows away any other compressor at the same price point.

The good stuff with all the knobs and battery compartment: MXR M87, Keeley compressor, Aguilar TLC, EBS multicomp etc.

Isn't that digital interface? I heard some guitars have digital audio output over ethernet or some proprietary connector, but I don't have any guitars of the sort. That'd also mean the audio gets digitized by an internal DAC pretty early in the signal chain, avoiding many sources of noise. Coupled with some good pickups, it probably makes for really good recording hardware.

Its about build quality

Squier is a separate company that makes guitars, Fender comes along and say "You can put our name on your guitars (and also use some of our designs) and we'll take a cut of the profit"

Basically, you can get a Squier made in some third world country

You can get a Fender made in Mexico (MiM) which are a little better but more expensive

Or you can get a Fender made in America (MiA), which are supposedly better because the American workmanship is better, but these costs the most

I say supposedly like all things quality is subject to change, Think about wines and vintages, some years are better than others, also there is a degree of preference, you might like thin necks over fatter ones

All in all, odern Squiers are fine guitars for beginners, take a friend that plays guitar down to your local guitar store to make sure your not getting mugged off
>>
>>70112649
Yeah, but I play bass.
> Oh, so like a guitar, but with 4 strings. Why don't you play regular guitar?

>>
>>70113886

F# F and B I think

Tuning is standard tuning with the G# according to some old tab from the old mbv fansite but I wouldn't really know, I ain't ever played that song.

To get the sound just roll off your tone knob and strum while bending with your guitar tremolo.

the vm ones released around 2012 with that danelectro style bridge and the jagmasters etc are good though

i built a partscaster jaguar with a squier jaguar body purchased off ebay but i used a mexican jag neck and mexican fender jag pickups to have a semi-decent jaguar (came out cheaper than it would have been for squier jaguar retail anyway, and much better sounding)

Some of it is quality of the wood
But it also means:
Quality of the screws and the screwing
The quality of the sanding of the wood
The quality of the fitting of the parts
The quality of the frets and their spacing
The quality of the electronic parts used

And lots more stuff, just imagine, a Squier is a guitar someone takes 4 hours to build, A MiA Strat is a guitar someone spends a whole day putting together

Anybody here have an account on gametabs.net?

I'm trying to log in but it's not working. I tried requesting a password but it says my email is not in their system (I even have the email I got from registration a while ago, and double checked everything and shit). I gave up and tried making a new account but the registration form returns an error.

Despite this I can see that there have been people posting in the forums in the past hour. I've been having this problem since last night.

Can anybody with an account check to make sure it's just not me?

re; modding, you just have to figure that in to eventual cost. Which is to say, will a $250 Squier with new pickups and bridge (~$200 extra) be as good or better than a $500 MIM. Same sort of calculation for MIM vs. MIA. Usually the value proposition works out better for MIM modded vs. MIA than it does for Squier modded vs. MIM as you save a lot more off the sticker price of an MIA in that situation. Also need to figure in whether you're going to be doing those mods yourself or have a shop tech do it for you.

guitars more fun for playing by yourself, cuz you can actually play the main part of a song or bang out some chords and sing along or play harmonica. bass is more like drums, you really need to be in a band to get the most out of it.

Bass.

I was in the thread yesterday as well
but I still need some more opinions
Best system for tuning stability that is not a floyd rose? I love FR, but changing strings is a real bitch. Locking tuners make it easier to change strings, but don't do much else. Evertune is solid but a mechanical nightmare to mount. Strandberg guitars are ugly as hell, but the system is solid. ABS custom bridges are probably expensive as hell. Ibanez Edge FX is restricted to, well, Ibanez. And then there are a couple more custom companies building fixed bridge locking systems, which again, is probably expensive as fuck. That pretty much leaves Kahler, but I have no idea as to how easy it is to change strings or how stable it actually is. Is is comparable to the stability of a floyd?
Bonus: two separate questions:
-Is the EVH De-Tuna any good? Does it even work?
-Can you retrofit coil split/ coil tap?

That's it, thank you

MIA's aren't memes, there's a huge gulf between MIM and MIA, I've played both and own an Elite. For starters the MIM's are dipped in plastic an 1/8 of an inch thick, and although the finish on the neck is quite nice it's not MIA nice. The bridges are totally different and the electronics/pups are slightly better to Squire tier. Even if you upgraded all those parts you still have a MIM no one is gonna pay more than $300 for, should you ever decide to sell. Probably less modded. Now you could do all those things, sink in an extra $300 just in pups and a bridge, and another $50 in machines, but now you're in the used MIA standard market $650+.
Don't take my word, do the math. Go out and play some if you can.
>>
>>70116447
8-38 = ultra light
9-42 = super light
9-46 = light-standard
10-46 = light
11-48 = medium
11-52 = medium heavy
10-52 = light heavy bottom
12-56 = heavy

for electric guitar strings thats kind of how it goes. different companies have different names and slightly different gauges

They've always done this in Japan. They have such a massive range of guitars, but the vast majority of their ESP LTD stuff is aimed at metal players.

>>70113728
>>70113887
There are a few guitars out there that output via ethernet but it was very much an experimental thing that never really caught on. Realistically an interface is your best bet. I've been experimenting with a few cheaper models lately and a good one I've found is the Yamaha GO46. No drivers past Vista and they're firewire. They work in 7 but never tried 8.1 or 10. They're cheap second hand as a result.

>>70115718
I think it's more that most guitarists own, owned, or will own a big muff or big muff style pedal at some point. I have a Ram's Head Clone at the moment and it's a great pedal.

>>70116468
Have you considered blocking a floyd rose? All of my live guitars are setup like that now. Can get through a full set without retuning. Dramatically simplifies restringing as well since the bridge movement is restricted to less than a millimeter or so.

>Is the EVH De-Tuna any good? Does it even work?
They work, but I've never been a fan myself.

>Can you retrofit coil split/ coil tap?
>Split
Providing your pickups are four conductor it's just a matter of fitting a push pull pot or a switch and rewiring it. If it's two conductor it's a bit more complicated.

>Tap
You'd most likely need new pickups designed for it.

it's not dumb, it just defeats the purpose of light top heavy bottom
higher strings - more bends, easier with lighter strings
lower strings - heavy strings downtune without getting floppy, good for drop D for example
there wouldn't be much point to heavy top light bottom

I have thought of blocking my FR, but never got around to it. Restringing is basically exactly like a fixed bridge guitar, but at the end you clamp the locking nuts and it's done right?

Thanks for the extensive reply

I kind of want to have an all-in-one guitar; solid tuning, 7-string (B for my death metal and E-standard for my prog-rock project), coil tap/split for the warm single coil sound, and possibly a D-tuna to switch to drop tuning if I want to. It's one hell of a combo, but I think it'd be pretty awesome. Maybe it'll end up being some kind of frankenstein monster

>>70116686

>>
>>70116755
Unpopular opinion : I actually prefer having more tension for bending, because you need to bend the string more, and thus the intonation is more correct.
You also get a really cool sort of rebound from the strings against the pick.

Setup first includes a blacklight scan of your instrument before handling to check to see if there are any bodily fluids on the instrument. If anything comes up a call to the local PD will be placed and they will do a forensics scan to make sure this isn't evidence in any open or closed cases. They will then do a social media scan to contact your closest peers to let them know you're a sick fuck. Cheers.

yeah just get some pickups, GC might have some used ones which will be fine as well and might save you $$$$

what kind of music do you play?

duncan JB bridge, 59 neck is a popular combo, as well as a lot of others on the duncan website.

Its cheap and it sounds good. I have a couple of " booteek" fuzzes and I still prefer my regular big muff for most lead sounds.

Playing without pedals is objectively the best way to improve on guitar though.

yeah I asked Agata from Melt-Banana and Nick Reinhart from Tera Melos and they both said the same thing
>>

>just started playing
>already has a collection of pedals

Youre fucking doomed. Throw that shit away and go buy a decent acoustic. Play it for a year solid and maybe you will redeem yourself.

I started playing seriously in November. I have an Orange amp, $300 Boss multi-fx pedal, $1000 PRS s2, Ibanez RG421, Squier Tele, Squier P-Bass, Breedlove acoustic, and a Big Muff pedal. How mad are you on a scale of 1-10?
>>
>>70117649
But my goal when playing guitar is to have fun, and messing with pedals is fun

KEK

HOLY FUCK FENDER IS SO BAD
>>
>>70117637
Not him but what kind of fucking advice is that? The way to keep interested is to make the sounds you like, not "redeem oneself" by playing acoustic when you like electric.
>>
>>70117637
i played bass for the last 15 yrs, most of my stuff is from that

also, i have a decent acoustic and a decent electric. how does it feel to not have a real job and be too poor to buy some used gear?

As a guitar player, i got along fine without pedals for years. I used different delays in my time but until a few years ago i had no need for pedals. Now i have more than i need, and make a bunch too. Ive been recording bass on my own tracks for over a decade now, never had a need for anything more than a fuzz, a compressor, and occasionally reverb. I rarely use effects at all, but im a rhythmic player, i sometimes do a lot of fills but pedals would be distracting for that. YMMV, if youre a melodic player pedals might benefit you, but theres no need for them. 3 things bass players benefit from in my eyes, a compressor, a boost, and a di box, and only live really. Fuzz is nice if you play heavier music, or want to play a solo that sticks out. Reverb is only nice if you need to fill a ton of empty space.

Really though, you dont need any. If you feel you need one, wait til you know what it is.

I play mostly death metal, but I'm a blues player at heart so I do some neck pickup stuff too

Thats the type of shit poorfags say

unless you're gigging pedals are pointless. That fuzz sure sounds great when you're playing in your room doesn't it?
>>
>>70118004
Also lets hear the original music you've created in the past 10 years, I'd really be interested to hear what you've got to prove with your shitty guitar and amp.
>>
>>70113738
i have a classic vibe strat modelled on the 50's ones and its very good

you prob want a set of active EMG pickups, the 81/85 set is popular. google ESP LTD guitars and find some yt demos of those pickups in those guitars. they are geared towards metal.

You guys know this discussion is useless right? At the end of the day, neither of you is going to convince the other, so please save your effort and keep doing whatever you like
>>
>>70118093
Was thinking about the SD nazghul for the bridge
Not sure about the neck tho
Actives are an option, I have plenty of room for battery packs in the hollow parts
>>
>>70118161
yeah i have no idea since i dont listen to that stuff, but you are on the right track if you like metal. my advice is just to listen to everything on youtube as much as possible before deciding.
