I reckon adulthood is realizing that people just prefer different bands for their own reasons, mainly just because their immediate style and sound appeals to them more, probably just because of where it sits in their history of listening up to that moment or whatever. That being said I prefer Metallica because their 2nd and 3rd albums especially showcase a level of composition and use of harmony and development throughout longer songs and whatnot that I've yet to ever hear from Slayer, I just get way more hooked into the actual songs and melodies and find them much more memorable. That being said I'd rather listen to Slayer if I'm in the mood for some straight up cathartic furious shit, they certainly have the edge in raw aggression and power.
I actually don't know why they get drawn as these like real equivalent "which one do YOU prefer" two bands so often, they are actually pretty different really.

Metallica were easily on the way to being established as one of the best metal bands ever, in the top three easily. And then they went and fucked it up.

I definitely respect Slayer's career more at this point. Slayer is way more extreme but I do actually really like Slayer. It'd be hard for them to be my favorite band ever though because I wasn't beaten as a kid or from a broken home.
