Yes. He'd have posted the then-obscure bands he liked in rec threads, he'd complain about synthpop and glam metal sucking, and he'd have shilled Bleach.

I think he would, yeah.

Nevermind [DGC, 1991]

After years of hair-flailing sludge that occasionally achieved song form on singles that no normal person ever heard, Seattle has finally produced some proper post-punk in the person of resident genius Kurt Cobain. Riff-verse-bad solo-chord change, the kind of sloppy, tuneful music that represents what hard rock was generally understood to be before metal moved in. They make it seem so simple, and it's a shame the lesson will all be forgotten again in a few years. A-

I always thought so too. Hard rock is blues based and usually has power chords, not riffs, also it doesn't have sci-fi or fantasy subjects. Metal usually also relies on various scales found in classical music like Aeolian and Dorian. Hard rock usually has blues scales, and tends to stick with 4/4 time while metal can have odd time signatures.

Kiss are definitely hard rock, their music doesn't have the technical complexity of metal or go off of basic 4/4 time, also they seldom used riffs. Their heyday in the mid-70s was a boomtime for hard rock, incidentally--Kiss, Aerosmith, BTO, Montrose, Rick Derringer, etc.

No, and Kurt never claimed such either.

"Punk rock is dead and buried. We're just giving it a proper funeral and honoring its memory as best we can."
>>
>>70097990
>Kiss are definitely hard rock, their music doesn't have the technical complexity of metal or go off of basic 4/4 time, also they seldom used riffs

Correct. Ace Frehley was no shredder and Paul Stanley was strictly a chord guy. Classic Kiss rarely had riff-driven songs and the few they did do (like Parasite) were Ace's compositions, not Paul's.

>For a long time I had this theory: the impossibility of a female Kurt Cobain. What he represents, leaning against the system and yet supported by consumers, there was no woman in the world that could command the masses so utterly. The music industry wouldn't let her. This thing I've been stewing about since I saw Grimes play to 20 people in 2011, and started reading her Tumblr, and then really starting feeling when "Oblivion" came out, is that Claire is the closest thing we have to a female Kurt Cobain, smart enough to understand the system but righteous enough to wall-jump away from it. But also, interestingly, what an inversion her approach is to Kurt's. His pose was anti-establishment, her pose is post-structural. He was rigorous, she is always looking outward, game for genre-experimentation and hilarity. I feel like even if I don't like her music, and I do so far, I will always feel like she's several steps ahead of me, several books ahead of me, and that makes me feel really fucking good. Anyone who gives her grief about anything can kick rocks as far as I'm concerned.
http://www.undertheradarmag.com/interviews/2014_artist_survey_owen_pallett/

Imo if Kurt was around today he and Grimes would be the best-est of friends.
