Can someone tell me whether this is at all listenable? I'm not really used to producing this kind of stuff and can never tell if I'm on the right track or not. The levels are probably way off, I only have headphones and I haven't really even thought about mixing yet because I don't really know how.

Hey guys, i'm building a pure electronic music studio. What are some essentials?
>>
>>69972044
Midi keyboard & studio monitors & an audio interface are really the bare essentials you need, plus a DAW of course. but if you cant afford monitor speakers then settle with monitor headphones. ive been using my Audio technica ath M50x for almost 2 years now and they are hands down the best headphones on the market, i dont even have monitoring speakers yet, but i do just fine with my headphones.

I want to do live dub mixes and shit with my mpc 1000, is a soundcraft epm 12 mixer an allright choice if i could get it used for less than a 100 euro?
Here are the specs:

>12 Mono and 2 Stereo channels
>3-Band EQ with sweepable mids
>Insert per channel
>2 Aux Sends switchable pre/post
>Solo/Mute switch per channel
>Dynamic Peak-LED thomann per channel
>L/R and Monitor outputs
>Separate Routing for Playback input
>48V Phantom power
>Integrated power supply
Also i know next to nothing about mxiers so yeh

for live dub mixes, I would think you'd want more than 2 Aux Sends. But i dont know what is standard for that genre...are just 2 delays all that are needed?

one for delay one for reverb, wouldnt that be enough?

ive never really listened to old skrillex stuff before but im amazed. How is he "playing" these instruments? specifically here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXhmyyXFd5I

I dont see how this is all sampling with a keyboard. I don't get how he has so much control and flexibility with his sounds. The fuck is he doing? 23 seconds in. Is that a guitar? sounds so choppy. I like it. The fuck is that 38 seconds in? 53 seconds is the chorus. You hear all kinds of split second sounds that are somehow in tune and sound good. As you can tell I don't know shit about high level sound design.

>>
>>69982217
is the drop kick sidechained to the 808 in that? also how would I even go about designing that late night vibe drop ambient synth?
>>
>>69984063
I'm not sure you know much about sound design at all, because what you're talking about is not even sound design. You're talking about the arrangement. There is no "sampling with a keyboard" and I don't even know what you mean by that.

What do you mean by control and flexibility? You can put a sound wherever you want at whatever time in the arrangement using just about any DAW, it's just a matter of him arranging many different sounds together in a short space of time that makes it sound so hectic.

Firstly: The theremin synth is gay as fuck
Secondly: There is zero tension and release if you're going to use a bunch of random sounds you better make sure your composition is exciting
Thirdly: having the same fucking fx before the snare is fucking repetive and stupid, the snare loses it's importance if you use the effect on every snare.
Fourth: It sounds like background music trying really hard to be noticed

Nope, not finished. Your lead is far too loud and is drowning everything out and your kick is barely noticeable. Things to do (imo of course):
- sidechain your leads and bass to the kick
- filter out your lows that don't need to be there
- boost your drums, cut back your lead

>>69983384
fucking dope! I love this style of breakbeat jazz? I'm not sure what its called. One tip would be to maybe cut up your sample a bit to add some variety.
>>
Is there a good resource that would explain the drum sequencing of good jungle / breakbeat?

I have a 909 routed into my DAW and each instrument is touted to a separate audio track, so my work flow is solid. But I just dont know much about drum theory or rhythm theory and how to make a cool break

Hey lads

Have any of you composed orchestral music in a DAW yet? I know it's not going to sound like the real deal, but i wanted to record some of the classical music i've been writing, then maybe live record it at some point in my life.
Been trying to do it using the Ableton Live 9 sample packs for brass/woodwinds/strings but they feel pretty limited when it comes to creating dynamic playing.

I heard the native instruments Kontakt sample pack is the industry standard

>>
>>69996986

for orchestral/scoring stuff, most of it is kontakt but vsl is obviously a beast of it's own
>>
>>69996456
tbqh this seems like an odd question coming from someone that already owns an original 909 and clearly a good audio interface to handle all of it's outputs.

breaks/jungle is mostly comprised of samples of drum breakdowns from early funk recordings. 909s/808s are typically used to layer with the samples to provide a strong backbone to the beat. So whatever the sample is, just try to mimic that beat without messing up the groove.

also any pics of your setup?

Sup /prod/, I'm looking for a cheap laptop powerful enough for music production at home and on the go. I will be recording up to six inputs simultaneously on an audio interface at any one time. I don't think I will be running many - if any - VST instruments but I'd like to keep that option open for the future, and no doubt I'll be using various VST effect plugins. Can anyone advise on specs I should be looking at or even any laptops themselves that would fit my requirements? Thanks.

oh gtfo
>>
>>69998068
It's just for a rough sketch you idiot
>>
>>69998068
You know that most orchestral music composed for film/games etc. is first recorded in MIDI, then sent as stems to the production team which then records it with live musicians right? So idk what you're implying.
>>
>>69998008
you're not gonna be able to afford any processing power with that budget, and that's fine, but just understand that you won't be able to run intensive plugins and that you'll have to be conscious and economical with your DAW. you should be fine with almost all VST effect plugins, but will have to be careful to bridge plugins too much. your audio interface will be doing most of the work i think as far as 6 inputs goes, but i'm not 100% on that.

as far as the laptop itself, just fine the best specs without ignoring the build/reliability of the laptop. try slickdeals.com, but idk about britbongs. you're looking for a dual-core processor, hopefully something i7 which is marginally better than i5. SSD is good but you'll be limited to like 128 gigs of space (which is garbage) and so you should be fine with an HDD.

hardmode: buy a 7 pound used programming thinkpad with a quad-core i7 godcessor

convince me to not buy this @ $400 USD
it's either this or a weighted electronic piano @ $250 and an MPD232 @ $300
would i look like a retard with this if i got good enough to use it live? it just seems like such a great tool for use in my DAW and unlike most of these controllers the pads are actually really good, responsive, and reliable. i'm worried that it won't satiate my need to practice piano tho, but it's super convenient to only have 1 piece of equipment for both a keyboard and pads/faders/knobs. there is a version with 61 keys for about $100 more but it doesn't seem worth it.

this is also semi-weighted but $100 more with no pads or faders. i don't think i would actually use the chord and scale buttons. it looks cooler but i don't see why it's a better investment than the 249. maschine is super expensive as well with its own idiosyncratic workflow, and ofc i'm on a limited budget. i've tried the 2xx mpk series out myself and really like it and all of the reviews praise it to be better than other similar all-in-one devices.

I'm looking to stay getting into some music production but I have a question about gear. >>70005347

>>
>>70005455
I think I'm really not that productive when I produce, though.

E.g. if somebody tells me now what is specifically wrong here and what to do, I could improve, but else, I'll just get lost in it, make everything sound even worse and then drop it.

Without mentoring, I'm afraid I won't get too far here. Thought I could, but I don't know anymore.
>>
>>69983278
Right on. Makes me regret ending my module streak at 2 (of the same module lol)
>>
>>70005546
try to remake your favorite songs. that way you'll know exactly what you need to fix each time because you'll have a reference of what it's supposed to sound in the final form. do this with 100 songs and then you'll be a production god. oh yeah and also, go through ALL your synth and effect manuals and try to understand everything it talks about in there. when you see a term like "overtone" or "sample rate" look that shit up and figure out exactly what everything is and does.
>>
Anyone try the arturia keylab? I'll mainly be using it with ableton but I like the fact that you can use it for modular synths as well. Just not sure how useful it would be with ableton without any knobs, Also you can just arpeggiate on there too so that function might be useless too.
>>
>>70005693
Thanks! I will definitely start remaking stuff constantly for a while.
>>
Anyone have any experience writing RnB or soul Music? I'm not sure if the song i'm working on is too boring or not
>>
Don't get a Scarlett, they are great for a budget studio but they are weak as fuck, having other music hardware connected to your PC will make huge static noises.

>>70005347
That's the best part. You kind of "make" your own "instruments" in production. You should learn some synthesis. Here is a good place to start
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQ04PwFvui1BCUAE9wxmOqHE51mrDv8Ui
Also, you should consider getting a cheap analog synthesizer and play with it, it's like an introduction to much more complicated synths or VSTs.

>>70005693
Doing covers, remakes, remixes is always good too. But how I've learnt the most was fucking around in Live. Yeah sure at first you make pure mess and noise, but you get the gist of it pretty quickly, also learning new stuff every day is kind of neat.

It sounds not hypnotic enough for techno idk. Or not thick enough??? The sweeping sound sweeps too fast I think. I like what comes in at 1:00. Would put some distortion and reverb in. I think you could stretch the arrangement out to abbut 5 minutes with these existing parts, but just adding some slight little fills and stuff to develop each section and stretch it so the changes occur more slowly. Then it'd have more of that loopy techno vibe. The pacing is really hard to get right with techno.

Also your picture made me think, what are effects chains people use? Are there any articles explaining what effects chains to use? I know it makes a lot of difference which order you put effects in, and then there are sends, inserts, group channel fx...

Just use Reaper you fag. It's only 60 bucks and one of the best DAW's out there. And you can use it for free indefinitely (it never becomes gimped) if you're a cheap ass.

I have ableton but I never use it anymore after switching to Reaper.

I think there is a MeldaProduction plugin that allows you to draw free for new curves. Might be free, I can't remember.

>I want to do live dub mixes and shit with my mpc 1000, is a soundcraft epm 12 mixer an allright choice if i could get it used for less than a 100 euro?
I'd say go for something with more AUX channels 4-6 would be ideal for dub. I'd say a 16ch mixer is pretty minimum for channels too.
Personally I prefer the older mixers from the 80-90's as they seem to have lots of spacing between the channels strips and knobs, which is ideal for getting in there and dubbing out.
I guess a 12 channel mixer with 2 aux would be fine to start but I get the feeling that you will want a bigger mixer in no time. I have a 16 channel, 4 aux Soundcraft mixer (it's a beast) that I picked up for £200 and I'm already thinking of buying another one or a bigger 32 channel mixer. Don't forget the mixer is pretty much your main instrument in Dub music it's the heart of the studio. Happy dubs.

Happy New year all. Hope 2017 brings you all love and joy.

Can any of you rec decent drum VST's.

Looking for something with a decent bank of pre made beats, preferably in odd time signatures.

I'm a buy fag so anything goes.
>>

>are you an audio engineer?
Not by a long stretch. I'm just a bedroom studio anon that is heavily influenced by dub music. Ive been using hardware since the 90's and recently got back into it.

>should a ripe 22 year old peruse this career path
Only you can decide that? I honestly think I'd rather do my shitty job full time than something in the music business. From experience something you enjoy can easily be turned to something you hate by choosing it as a job.

Between the Novation launchkey 25 ($80) or Akai mpk25 ($100) which would you guys say has the most bang for the buck as a starter keyboard? I was planning on getting a Novation SL 49 that I found on CL but the post is now gone.

>how the fuck do you guys stay motivated? i start up fl studio ready to make something but i get frustrated and just give up for a few days
Usually by changing what I'm doing when I don't feel motivated anymore. If I've been writing arrangements and I'm not inspired I'll stop and sit down with a synth for a few days making sounds to use later on or I'll dig for samples or create samples and spend time EQing and editing them. Sometimes I'll just switch up what I'm doing completely and do something totally different. I'm at that stage today and I'm going to spend the day chopping breaks and trying to write some old style jungle, which is something I've not really done before.
Its all good for learning new things and you can apply some of these things to your creativity.
Creating your own sample I find can be really inspiring and something I do a lot. I usually start off with no direction and then just build samples around the first sample I make depending on where that sound takes me. Once I have made a set of samples I'm usually inspired to do something with them and already have a few basic ideas of what I want to do with them. I'll make a few tracks with them and once I'm bored of that scrap them and start making a new set.

Heres a quick question

I use Logic Pro X to do everything in. Record, mix, master, produce, etc.

I've used Logic Pro X to play tracks on stage as a vocalist but want to take my production to the stage and perform them live with my midi controller.

What would y'all suggest I use? I was thinking Mainstage since it kind of goes with Logic although I've never used it but I think most people would use Ableton.

Suggestions?

Anyone here got Komplete 11?

I'm thinking about upgrading. Are the new strings / symphony's any good?
>>
Would anyone be willing to help me with an issue?

When I play any notes, most of the time they don't show up but once in a while it'll register a note has been pressed. Someties it'll just stay on or take a long time to go off, but most of the time nothing happens.
i use a midi controller, tascam us 144 and I do have the drivers and stuff

are you going through the input on the tascam or midi through usb? are you sure the controller is working? what about the input?

When I press a key the input will light up so I do think it's working properly because the light flashes when the key is pressed, and when its released. (The light on the controller)

It's got Midi out from the keyboard to Midi in on the controller, and then midi in on the keyboard to midi out, so its not a direct midi to usb adapter, the controllers connected through usb to my computer I have tried other ports but nothin

>the light flashes when the key is pressed, and when its released
that's normal, usually it's how they indicate the note on (first blink) and note off (second blink).

have you tried it without sending the midi out from the tascam to the keyboard? might be causing the notes to double trigger or something, i dunno
>>
holy fuck the u-he repro-1 is the best sounding monosynth i ever heard and ive got 3 classic analog monosynths to compare it to. it emulates the pro-one so that must be a beast

What do you guys think about creating a biweekly album made from /prod/ducers? Think of it as motivation so you can get shit done. It wouldn't matter how shit or good it is, all that would matter is that you finish a project. Just a thought, might be fun.

Is your Tascam interface the 144 Mk 2? Mk 1 models don't seem to have had any Windows driver updates since 2010 and they would be pretty flaky under Windows 10

is there some kind of sustain feature on the keyboard that might be engaged?
