ITT: Albums that start good but become shit quickly
People only pretend this album is good because She Is Beyond Good and Evil, Thief of Fire and Snowgirl are good even though the rest of it is wannabe Beefheart nonsene
We Are Time is pretty good as well, but for the most part it's pretty average at best. Their second one is better.
WESTERN VALUES MEAN NOTHING TO HER
Savage Sea, Words Disobey Me and Don't Call me Pain are the best songs on it, though.
Nah, it's a great album throughout. Yeah the tracks you mentioned have the more groovy thing going on, but the other tracks do more of the jazzy stuff, and they do a pretty good job of it. What makes those others tracks work so well it probably because Sager's surprisingly proficient at playing the sax and piano. So ultimately, it actually sounds more like a groovier, punkier Faust I with more proficient instrument playing than a Beefheart wannabe.
The non-groovy tracks are initially pretty grating, too though, and I used to feel the same way as you before I got used to it. But getting past that initial grating feel of the more free jazz tracks, it's a fantastic record.

They've admitted their Beefheart influence. But yes this is a chart filler album for people on /mu/.

Just like Trout Mask Replica?

Cool, but it has more similarities with Faust I than it does anything by Beefheart. Musique concrete bits, rock mixed with jazzy piano/sax, and varied song structures ranging from groovy post-punk that is easily digestible to structureless free jazz inspired sketches. That's definitely more Faust I than anything Beefheart has done.
It's certainly not a chart filler. But it's definitely a very unique record that catches people off guard with its song structures. Structurally even something like Trout Mask Replica is easy to digest due to how straightforward it is minus a couple spoken word bits. The tracks that aren't the catchy groovy ones are legit busy as fuck and comparable to jazz with their polyphony.

Your argument is much appreciated.

She Is Beyond Good and Evil might be the worse track on it though

I loved this album and it became one of my favorites earlier on but it lost its edge over time for me. though I've lost interest in music over time a bit so that might be why. Still think it's great regardless
