So my girlfriend just gave me her Fender banjo, but I don't know the first thing about banjos.
Is there anything I should know about general care, maintenance, or beginner tips?

Tip 1: throw in trash

Alright, fair enough. What's the alternative?

dont listen to him. Banjos are patrician
I can't modified my banjo in any way (tuning included) in like 5 years.
Chords are pretty easy and you can just play open chords half the time if you wanted to.

It's actually just a really nice drum, the neck with the stringy things are a holder to carry it over your shoulder when you're walking down the railroad tracks
who here /bassbanjo/?

If I were you OP (I'm not), I would start by googling banjo for beginners.

I've looked up a few videos on picking and picks and watched some banjo playing.
I was just hoping to get thread going on banjos.
If you wanna play bluegrass you basically just gotta emulate Earl Scruggs. He invented that rolling style.

Yeah I watched some videos about Scruggs style and rolling styles. I'm a big fan of Barney McKenna and have been studying his technique.
