Kanye West hasnt put anything good out in a minute, but if youre a fan of him you might like Pablo. You already know if youre gonna listen to Death Grips or not so im not going to include it. Except for Jay Rock, every artist I listed has released at least 1 new project this year. Old artists like Lil Wayne and Gucci Mane are putting out good stuff too, but arent really that new. J Cole is very boring and his newest release is painfully boring. Same thing with Childish Gambino. I also wasn't a fan of Chances new mixtape but I can understand how some people would like it.

IMO 2016 hasn't been that good of a year for hip hop except for a few J Dilla tracks being released for the first time.

So far out of those original artists, I've listened to Atrocity Exhibition (love it) and TPAB (enjoy it). I already enjoy Yeezus but I haven't heard Pablo yet. RTJ is alright but is a little basic to me. If Aesop Rock is really that good I'll get some of that, too. Not sure if he counts as hip hop but FlyLo's "You're Dead" is pretty slammin', too if that matters at all.

The interesting part about flylo and hiphop is that his music does count as hip hop. It's what makes hip hop one of if not the most interesting genre today, the term hip hop is so broad and consequently the music is very versatile, especially in the 2010s.

>>69910391
I listened to My Name Is Jeffrey and was so turned off by the cliche hip hop lyric subjects (drugs and sex with no interesting things underneath) and the fact he practically can't rap in English, since he sounded all garbled and exhausted. Is he always like that? Musically I thought it was pretty cool, though.
Also, Hopsin? Really? You're joking right?

>>69910467
Oh damn, I forgot all about that. That was one of those albums that I dodged because it sounded too out there for me. But I did the same with AE and ended up loving that.

>>69910496
XXX is definitely next on my list. I'm a little weary about his album Old but I'm sure it'll be as good. In terms of what I like, I'm a very picky person unfortunately. I like when artists experiment, and when beats are hard-hitting. Good flows, subject matter besides "drugs n pussy n sheeeit" are also big things I look for.
>>
>>69909630
>Get rid of Brown and Chance
bad
>>
>>69910624
>he fact he practically can't rap in English
thats an extremely basic way of looking at it. the reason why people like young thug is because he uses his voice like an instrument. yes, its nearly always impossible to decipher what he's saying, but if you look at his range of vocal sounds and the different inflections he can put on his voice, you can see he has a lot of ideas as to how to manipulate his voice around a beat. give him another shot.
>>

Old is good, not as good as XXX or Atrocity Exhibition, but you're probably going to love the beats, Old is a great hype album. Also "drugs n pussy n sheeeit" is also part of the human condition and should not be dismissed, Danny's creative and unashamed take on that subject makes him so good (apart from his great flow and lyricism).
>>
>>69910624
>subject matter besides "drugs n pussy n sheeeit" are also big things I look for.
i had this mindset, but certain sub-genres of hip-hop like trap only have lyrics of this quality, anything else would sound out of place really. thats why you listen to certain hip hop for the beats and general aesthetic.

True, but again, songs that do not deal with the subject in a nuanced way like kendrick and danny do it should not be dismissed, rap should not only be appreciated for its intelligent discussion of certain topics, but also for its expressive value. Some rappers neglect nuance to focus more on expression just like some rappers ditch storytelling to focus on creative and witty lyricism (i.e. MF DOOM). Goes without saying this can also be extended to music in general.
>>
>>69911641
That makes sense. I guess I just always considered it trashy. It's mainly why I dislike Dre's first two albums. All I got from them was "YUH GHETTO WEED BITCHES YUH" that kinda thing.

drake makes nice catchy music but for some reason ive never felt like he has had any artistic integrity, just hopping from one trendy sound to the next without ever making anything truly experimental or compelling
>>
>>69911918
That's because Drake stays in his lane, no one can really compete with him in terms of making radio hits and pop rap. At the same time, you can't ever be experimental when you're still using a ghostwriter.
>>
>>69911727
I feel you I was the same, you just need to adopt a more distanced point of view when listening to that stuff and concentrate less on what it expresses but on how it expresses it. It will make listening to stuff like Dre more rewarding.
