I guess how I would defend John Maus is that he's made it perfectly clear through interviews and statements what his aim is, and his aim isn't particularly complicated either.

He doesn't need to be any kind of avant-garde artist, and he's not, however his minimal style of pop songwriting is something he can take credit for. He never over-saturates his songs, but also includes just enough to keep them engaging.
