My friend is a writer at Pitchfork. He kept talking a lot about how much he loved this album recently when we met - so this isn't reflective of the Pitchfork opinion as a whole; just that specific writers opinion - same as the rest of their review pieces.

I thought it was pretty good but the second half of the album was definitely a lot weaker. I think a few tracks could have been cut near the end. Definitely not a 4.4, I'd give it a decent to strong 6.

I think Control System is one of the best hip hop albums of the decade, These Days was a letdown but still had some great songs.

I've fallen in love with Ab-Soul's personality on his past albums, so I'm willing to forgive him for all the stupid shit he says here and there on DWTW

I get what you're trying to say, but i don't know if i'd use the word 'lazy'.
Hip hop is different because most rappers are given well-made beats by their producers and then have to write words over it, which is much less work than like a jazz/blues musician who writes his own music and lyrics.

That being said, i do have respect for some rappers (ie Kendrick) who actually work to produce and edit the instrumentals and song format as opposed to drake who is given a cookie-cutter song and lyrics and just has to show up.
