The Downward Spiral might just be the best concept album of all time, hell, best album of all time. Every single album has some form of a hit, litereally every single one, the guy never released bad album once, all of them have amazing replay value as they hide a lot, you will not hear everything and notice everything upon your first listen, this goes even to their more accesible album like With_Teeth. This goes for sounds and themes.

I think Broken and the Fragile deserve some 10's too. Broken doesn't have a single flaw on it and the sheer scope and number of amazing tracks on The Fragile is amazing.

Don't get me wrong I love both albums, but Broken feels too much like he really wanted to be Al Jourgensen's best friend and The Fragile is honestly hampered by its huge scope (i.e. I love the instrumental and industrial tracks but it's brought down by the poppy tracks)

I've never gotten into NIN. I've tried Downward Spiral and Broken which seem to be some of the albums people recommend the most. At least so far nothing about NIN's music has been that interesting to me. Yet people seem to go crazy about it.

I hadn't either before last year but holy shit did Pretty Hate Machine fuck my shit up.

It's a melodically diverse album, pulling from rock, metal, electronic, and hip-hop while still maintaining a coherent song structure consistently. It was also made in the late 80s so it gives a really interesting perspective on how this album influenced the next decade.

I need to give The Downward Spiral the same attention I gave PHM but I'm still not quite over how good the debut is. For what it's worth, I listen to hundreds and hundreds of different albums every year and was still amazed by NIN's first 2 albums.
