I posted this in the """"tuner"""" general but I'm going to post here because I think it's a skill worth learning. How to tune your guitar with a tuning fork.

Tuning forks come in a variety of options but most common is A440. Tune your A string to the fork and tune the rest relative to that string.

My band needs a rhythm guitarist for a few months while our normal one can't play due to surgery. A guy showed to an audition of sorts up with a 20 watt line six amp and a Squier strat and then proceeded to call us snobs when we said we are looking for someone with a bit better equipment. I play in NYC all the time. You're overthinking shit, stop having that undeserved rockstar mentality. Most guitarists I know in that area play with small combo amps, can't think of one that doesn't actually.

a 20w spider is literally a practice amp, and a damn shitty one at that, if you're serious about playing shows, leave that shit at home and get a big boy amp, not every venue has a good pa
>>
>>69812851
Please show me a show that the band actually made money where they played with line six spider amps. If I was a rockstar or anyone not just doing this to help pay off my loans I would hope that I'd have better things to do than to sperg on 4chan about people with shitty gear.

True, but still it's a usable amp. I've seen blues guys (T model Ford for example) play with a shitty bottom of the line Peavey practice amp and he sounded great.

People really overrate the importance of gear.
>>
>>69812916
What kind of venues are you playing?

Wide stage/festival slots are one thing, but playing in the corner of some small dingy nightclub like 99% of gigs are it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference what gear you use.
>>
>>69812992
well, only usable if the venue has a pa and enough mics to mic everything.

this is true but there is still a line and a basis for why people do this in the first place.

My beliefs based on just a few of the trend examples above:
Vintage gear values will probably decline overall in the next 20 years with few exceptions. The baby boomers have driven the vintage gear market to insane heights, which is in large part due to a nostalgia factor, the "gear played by their heroes." However, they're all going to retire / die relatively soon. Some millennials enjoy a bit of vintage fever thanks to their Boomer parents. Very few Gen Z'ers will have any desire to buy vintage gear or understand the era it was associated with, OR have the money to purchase it at it's current value any time soon.
Due to a massive supply of quality gear leftover from dying baby boomers, guitar brands will get smaller and offer fewer models. We will likely experience many brand buyouts in the next decade or so as the industry condenses. Musicians' budgets include much more than just their own instruments, now that most record at home. Despite the recent surge in interest in tube amps of the past decade or two, tube amps will soon, once again, become a thing of the past for the average musician. The guitar industry will evolve to fit into the changing pop music landscape, or will die with a few last individual representatives holding the flame.
Moral of the story? In my mind, either sell your vintage gear in the next couple years if you want top dollar for it, and/or get ready to buy it cheaper in the next 10-15 years. Have an amp you know you will want to keep forever? A classic blackface fender or original marshall? Consider stocking up on parts.
These are just my informal opinions and I am eager for some discussion.

I can only see the prices for Fenders and Gibsons coming down really.

what's the best way to develop speed? this is what I'm doing now.
get five exercises.
play tem on 1/4, 1/8, triplets and 1/16. (some exercises I only play on triplets).
play them at X speed. lets say
1/4 - 120
1/8 - 60
1/16 - 30
the next day go up one step on the metronome.

this method doesn't seems to work. any help, please?
>>
>>69816976
>speed
Picking hand speed? Grip your pick right, use alternate picking, pic with your wrist (and not with your forearm or bicep like a mong), and practice.

There's literally nothing more to it than that.
>>
>>69817059
>pic with your wrist (and not with your forearm or bicep like a mong)

boy, you don't know the struggle I have on this.
When I use the pick my arm is a solid block. fuck me, finding about these kind of matters like posture or correct picking is a pain in the ass, everything is "play metallica in 5 minutes!!"
>>
>>69817088
In other words you're trying to implement a more advanced technique before you've even mastered a very basic/rudimentary one... and then you wonder why you're having trouble "picking fast".

You want to pick fast? Go find a detailed video of someone you think picks fast and look at his hands. Look where they fall, pay attention to the movements, note where his fingers are placed. Then watch the video over and over while trying to mimic those same movements. Once when I was a sausage I wanted to learn a Dillinger Escape Plan song so I took the tabs to YouTube and watched Ben Weinman play the song. Now I can play the song. It isn't magic, it's practice.
>>
>>69817088

my real strggle is gettin rid of tension. and I don't know how to do so. but I won't go any further if I don't learn how to be more "loose" and relaxed.

I'm not trying to play Eruption overnight, I'm stuck because of this.
>>
>>69817303
I'll check this, thanks
>>
>>69817312

Make sure you're not just practicing one technique at a time, as in per day. Should be practicing more than just tremolo picking or whatever, I find I get better the next day even with little practice, than if I spent the whole day practicing one technique. Applies to more than guitar really, but I say this because it sounds like you're having trouble controlling your strumming in general, not just picking.
>>
>>69817364
no, I was asking about gettin faster, but I practice different things everyday. Bending, powerchords, fingerpick, scales...
>>
>>69817312
There are guys who pick with their forearm and bicep:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bklFIanHdk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqMLoljINHo
but it's an inefficient technique that wastes energy and motion that you'd have to physically overcome to play a fast song. It'd also be difficult to unlearn latter. It'd be better to learn proper technique from the beginning, because you'd end up wasting less time and energy getting where you want to be.
>>
>>69817312
>learn how to be more "loose" and relaxed

Palm muting helped me with this. Incorporating your entire hand into playing and control of strings rather than intensely focusing on picking alone will feel far more comfortable.
>>
>>69817467
it's not only inefficient, it's also painful, and really holds you back, I just don't know what do with it, I'm asking different people. for some reason I start gettin tension when practicing powerchords or trying to play fast, so I stop befor becoming hulk or something.
>>
>>69817482
If you really give a shit get a teacher (or washed up 80s wannabe shredder) who can play some fast shit. Any teacher worth a fuck could easily show you how it's done.
>>
>>69817527
not rally, I've been with teachers and no one understands why this happens to me, why instead of playing "looser" and more relaxed, I get tension as speed goes up.
>>
>>69817546
Stop treating it like you're furiously jacking your tiny dick and things might improve.
>>
>>69817303
That's a good lesson but going up or down with the same kind of arpeggio shape gets boring quickly, if you throw in some inversions and longer notes, it gives off a much more distinct phrasing. And it's going to make your brain work a lot more instead of going in semi-autopilot mode.
