>tfw /mu/ talks more about Marina, Grimes, Carly, Charli and all those other overrated pop musicians and don't give a fuck about Madonna

She was good until COADF. Why is that?
>>
>>69801664
I listened to Like a Virgin and hated most of the tracks, if I'm being honest.
>>
This album is god tier. The blueprint for "weird" female pop in the 2010s.
>>
>>69801664
Marina, Grimes, Carly, Charli and all those other overrated pop musicians aren't Mainstream, that's why /mu/ likes them

/mu/ is full of Hipster faggots that can only like artists that are under a certain level of Success
>>
Ray of Light is better than any album by any of those people
>>
>>69801681
LaV is not even one of her best albums. Listen to Ray of Light, Like a Prayer or her debut.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_-D_-FvIWQ

I always think this song must have been a big influence on Grimes.
>>
>>69801664
In general, there's too much filler in all of her albums after Like a Virgin and she's far too self-indulgent

Like a Virgin is a classic though and she has a few other good songs but not a lot
>>
>>69801758
Not too sure about there being any direct Madonna musical influence on Grimes, but there are certainly Madonna-related lyrical references to be found. Eg. the track Venus Fly (which happens to be a vocalist team-up song) features the phrase "me against the music" [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clwLKJ294u4 ] as part of the pre-chorus refrain.
>>
>>69801664
They talk about these artists so much because they're much more talented than Madonna and much more beautiful.* Madonna's best work was made ages ago and she's not relevant anymore. She was already discussed to death for decades, there's nothing new or exciting about her. Let people discuss some fresh artists, not the same major label popstars.

* For example, Grimes is a complete artist, Madonna just an entertainer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madonna_%28entertainer%29
>>
>>69801664
And by the way, it's absolutely ridiculous to consider Marina, Grimes, Carly, Charli overrated when they're actually underrated and don't have enough commercial success. Maybe you're so imbecile to think that Madonna (one of the most overrated artists in the music history) is underrated.
>>
like a prayer is one of my favorite songs
>>
Ray of Light is like a watered-down, sanitized version of Massive Attack/Portishead/Bjork and the rest of her discography is complete shit, with the occasional decent single.
>>
>>69803502
Ray of Light is actually a William Orbit album disguised.

>“Interscope are calling me to help write Madonna’s record. They need something edgy. They need songwriting. She can’t just have her Avicii, her producers or whatever, come up with a new techno jam for her to gyrate to and pretend that she’s 20 years old. They actually need songs. I’m partly responsible for that return-to-values thing.”

>“I guess it’s called ‘throwback,’ but the first record was so good because of the songs. It’s been a downward slide [since] … ‘Ray of Light’ is not cool. And all the other stuff she’s done after that, it’s not like it matters. It really shows a drain of values. People need more substance in their mac-and-cheese. People need more sugar or something.”

>“It’s not because of her age. It’s because of the things that she thinks she needs to do to stay in her narcissistic domination of the world. Which is totally hers to have. But it’s about not just being a yes person. I’m sure Interscope signed her like, ‘Okay, the last record didn’t do so well. We gotta do something about this. We’re gonna get all new songwriters together and we’re gonna try to come up with this thing. ‘Cause she needs help with this.’ And she’s happy to let them do that for her.”

Shes talked about Madonna before. She called RoL a masterpiece.

There would LITERALLY be no Grimes without Madonna.

Even if that were true, there wouldn't be a lot of fantastic punk bands without the Ramones. What's your point?
>>
>>69804648
I mean shes literally gone on the record and talked about how much she loves Madonna. I thought you were a big Grimes fan. Guess not. Sad!

Also ray of light is a masterpiece

I'm sorry, I don't follow every inkling detail of Grimes' life and personality.
>>
>>69801664
Ehhhh self titled is her only rly great album. great production, some of the best pop songs ever and good vocals.

I don't like any of the others that much. I've listened to Ray of Light, which ppl call her best, 5 times and the production is a m a z i n g but the songs are mediocre as hell.
>>
>>69804694
Yeah..... she clearly has some liking/level of respect for Madonna's body of work, but afaik she has never mentioned Madonna's music being an active influence on her own (and she's had PLENTY of opportunities to do so.)
>>
why has nobody in here said a word about erotica? and yes, i agree that ray of light is her best album by far. it's a true masterpiece
>>
>>69804606
That's wrong. She likes Madonna, I'm aware of that, but she never claimed she's a major influence in her music. Just a second tier favorite artist. Grimes would start her career with or without Madonna existing.
>>
this is a madonna thread hello not a grimes thread
>>
>>69805650
Any female artist making pop music today wouldn't be making music without Madonna. Her chain effect from the beginning in the 80s to now is too staggering. The people Grimes has directly said she is influenced by wouldn't have existed without her.
>>
>>69805650

t. Born after 2000
>>
>>69805808
I don't care about Grimes but this...Madonna's effect wasn't just musical so much as it was cultural, pretty much every female pop artist had Madonna as their only available source of inspiration growing up or in turn was influenced by someone else who worshiped Madonna
>>
>>69805800
Then why did you mention Grimes in the very first post? (Assuming you're the OP). You asked for trouble.
>>
How come no one here ever mentions Olivia Newton John, whose 1978 single "Physical" inspired a lot of Madonna's early sound?

That's not a joke - listen to Physical and then to early Madonna songs like Burning Up. The similarities have been noted by others for years.
>>
>>69805519

>Erotica

>>
>>69805984
No one mentions Cyndi Lauper either who had a huge hit album before Madonna...but I suspect it's mostly because pop music for the most part ages like milk and so most people don't talk about the stuff from before their era if it's not that different stylistically from their own, which is why, as already established, we never talk about Madonna here either

We also don't talk about PJ Harvey even though she actually made good music and is praised to high heaven by critics (and was hotter than most of the people we do talk about)

just wanted to talk about madonna
i think she has an overlooked discography

Yeah. Because pop - by definition - has absolutely no attention span.

That, and the fact that it is far easier to concoct a compelling story about someone if you simply pretend everything they did was entirely original and unique. Especially if that person's own sources of inspiration were obscure enough that the chances of anyone else managing to connect the dots necessary to realize just how little of what they did was actually original to them are so small as to be pretty much insignificant

Example: People love to talk about how innovative and original Classic (pre-Joanne) Lady Gaga was - with only a little back-and-forth about possibly stealing things from Madonna - despite the fact that pretty much her entire act seems to have been based on aping pre-Madonna Dale Dozzio's style ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IasCZL072fQ ) How does someone as big as Lady Gaga get away with something like that? By virtue of the fact that almost no one remembers/ever heard of an obscure early 80s new-wave band called Missing Persons in the first place. To quote Grimes (because she really does seem to have one of the best perspectives on the matter):
>>[Talking about Art Angels:] It's the first time that I've had the budget or the skill-set to actually reference any of the music that I actually grew up on. Like, in one of these songs... it's the same guitar sound as A Perfect Circle. And so it conjures all these ideas. There's just that whole lineage of music. And then every sound and every color and every visual has a giant connection to human history that just goes back thousands of years. You can't just erase that stuff and pretend it doesn't exist. That visual and that sound means all these things, whether you want them to or not.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi2N5KHgO80

Imo most big-time artists seem to lack the personal integrity and strength of character necessary to reject the myth of true originality ttbh.

She's been nothing but a talentless gimmick since day one. All she's done is make crap like Taylor Swift accepted my the mindless masses.
The world would have been a better place if a porn director discovered her in 1977...

Speaking of Lady Gaga, don't forget she ripped off the entire style of Roisin Murphy (ex-Moloko). I think she really learned most of her tricks (both musical and image-related) from Roisin.
