I can't understand him

Was he really just a cynical asshole? A jerk making random shit to see how far he could take this thing? Did he actually care about this music shit at all?

Did he actually think he was funny?
>>
Literally who
>>
>>69782799

He made some genuinely good music.
He was also an edgy dickhead.
>>
>>69782799
Is that Charles Manson?
>>
>>69782799
hes an satirist

Talented musician who decided to take joke approach to his cynicism
if you don't get it you don't get it. but dont you dare say he didn't care about his music
>>
>>69782799
I'm sick of you leftists thinking Castro was a good person
>>
Santana?
>>
he did comedy music because that sold records, especially after he left Warner and formed his own label the "comedy" just got cruder

he would have wanted to make serious orchestral music, but on his own terms and basically couldn't afford it most of the time - he was essentially a control freak and ran his band more or less as a business paying the musicians a steady salary and doing that for a large orchestra isn't exactly cheap
>>
>>69782926
>He did comedy because that sold records
He wasn't exactly a millionaire, though I think it helped him. He's had a couple of hits, purely by chance (Valley Girl). Valley Girl was most widely adopted by the group of people he was criticizing.

He said that there's something in his music to offend everyone and it has. It definitely still does. If you can't appreciate satire in music, I think that he's not for you. Even some of his instrumental songs were that way:
https://youtu.be/3pbcstBH31U

Q:>There's a Frank Zappa instrumental called 'Variations of the Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progression'. Have you heard it?

CS:>Oh yes. I've heard it and I laughed my butt off, you know. I thought it was really funny. I met him a couple of times and I was always in awe of his mind. I think his mind, much like Prince, is pretty amazing. I thought it was in good fun. I believe on the same record he made fun of Bob Dylan (presumably a reference to 'Flakes'), so I was just really grateful to be in the company of Bob Dylan and Frank Zappa.

>As far as the other kind of stuff, it is true that I'm very limited on the harmony chord texture but at the same time, I'm very grateful that I get to play with John Lee Hooker and Wayne Shorter. I used to be harder on myself for not knowing the things that other people know. Then again, I feel things Frank Zappa could never feel, so I think it's pretty even Stevens. I was sad when he left because I think we need forces like him to show us and share with us Mozart-like operas and Mozart-like involved muscle intellect (laughs).

>That's the only way I can put it – 'muscle intellect'. I still gravitate basically towards John Lee Hooker. I'm not a complex person as he put it in the 'Variations of Santana Chords' (sic). I'm not a complicated person and to me, it's like I try to feel my heart and I try to touch yours. That's it! When I first heard the piece, it did disturb me. I felt like it was a put-down, you know. But after a while, I said 'you know, if he feels like that about it, then I'm still complimented I'm on the same record with Bob Dylan... (even though he isn't -Ed)

hes just an old man that still holds naive, teenage opinions and mentality. you see that type of shit all the time with normal people.
>>
>>69782855
so he took his art seriously, and wasn't just playing a smug joke on his listeners most of the time?

He just had goals and ideas that were unique to each of his many eras. Zappa changed stylistically in a major way about three times a decade, at least, up until his death. For me, basically all of his best material was recorded by the mid-70s, but you could find someone to stump for any era of Zappa. Don't let edgelords scare you away.

Here's what he put on the back of his album with the London Symphony Orchestra:

he'd walk awhile smoking, whil mumbling about laws
>>
>>69783245
He said that the album he released could only be played perfectly if musicians had more time to rehearse the material. He also said that what you hear on the album isn't how it's meant to sound, but that's the best he could do with the time limit and money he had. I wish someone today had the audacity to say that and to admit to fans that they're listening to a sub-par material.

they're on too many drugs to care about making the music perfect

What's not to understand? He was cynical, but not an asshole. He didn't make random shit, but some of his music was pretty shit (most of it was good, though). He did care about music and was pretty "patrician" in his music tastes. I also happen to think he was pretty funny.
>>
>>69783456
>but some of his music was pretty shit
It's a shame that his classical music and doo-wop falls into that category.

>>69783450
>The London Symphony Orchestra
>Drugs
Sure...
>>
>>69783529
>someone today
>>
>>69783511
I like both of those. His classical sounds almost like something Varese would compose were he still alive, while the doo-wop is just pure fun.
>>
>>69783282
go to bed dweezil
>>
>>69783592
I mean that we didn't get to hear what his classical music would've sounded like if it was played properly. These are the albums I didn't enjoy: Cruising With Ruben & The Jets, Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention.
>>
>>69783654
Listen to Yellow Shark and the first half of the Perfect Stranger if you want to hear what his orchestral music sounds like when played by proper musicians.
>>
>>69783693
Thank you. I've skipped most of his live albums, but I'm already in love with this one. He's covers are absolutely magnificent, especially his version of Ravel's Bolero:

>>
>>69783764
>I've skipped most of his live albums
That's a big mistake. Some of his best music happened live. Listen to You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore vol. 2 if you want to get a taster.

And if you dig the classical-influenced stuff, check out Burnt Weeny Sandwich, which contains a couple tributes to Stravinsky and some percussion that reminds me a lot of Varese.
>>
>>69783968
I'll definitely listen to his live albums. Burnt Weeny Sandwich is my favorite Zappa album alongside Freak Out!.
>>
>>69784142

Burnt Weeny Sandwich and Weasels Ripped my Flesh are great

I really liked Zappa's (and the Mothers) 66-70 works.
>>
>>69785485
He has some really great stuff outside that time period. I know people like to criticize the type of humor he used during the 70s, but depending on what you listen to, the music is still pretty great.

Yeah I like his music in general just the mentioned era is probably my favorite.

There's still a few 80s albums I need to listen to though. I liked the Guitar albums and London Symphony and Jazz From Hell
>>
>>69782799
I think he actually cared about music a lot, possibly more than his contemporaries, but due to insecurity felt that he had to cloak it in humor and irony. His satirical take on music only really worked on early Mothers records. It became a hindrance throughout the 70's and by the 80's his music was completely seething and unfunny. He actually sounds most confident when he's at his least satirical. He may have been a musical genius, but he could never be comfortable enough with himself to peruse that, which is why the irony dragged on way past We're Only In It For the Money.
