My external drive fell to the floor while I was playing guitar yesterday, probably from a ghost. Amazingly, when I shove the connector in hard enough it gets power and I actually hear the drive fucking reading! Except the connector USB is fucked. Here is hoping and praying that a new USB connector will save this external, as it has all my fucking videos, vidya, and my recordings on it.

How a drive falls from a static position while I am on the other side of the room jamming the guitar scares the shit out of me. Pretty sure my ex girlfriend has placed a hex on me. She was a witch, you know.

There's a few main components to setting up the guitar.
The first that everyone cares about is action, aka how low the strings are compared to the fretboard.
A well setup action has the strings set as close as possible without any buzz coming out (meaning the string has a proper relief and can vibrate freely), and so in the same way all over the neck.
Then, comes intonation. Intonation is making sure the frets all give out the same note when going higher up the neck, so that you don't end up a quarter tone apart when suddently tapping the octave for example.
On top of that, there are also minor stuff such as lubing the nut, checking/resoldering wonky electronics, and so on.

Also, learning to setup a guitar by yourself will save you both times and money.

I've only ever owned two new amps, my first ever one and ac4, I've had a bunch of used ones, from beat to shit things from the 70s to near mint and never had a problem. Changing a valve is easier than changing a light bulb.
>>
>>69765996
I say no because you can find them used for $200-$250. It was even $250 at Guitar Center during their November sale.

Depends on your price range.
As a general rule of thumb, most stuff below 300 bucks ranges from "eh" to straight up garbage
Also target which genre you want to play before buying and try different guitars out, there's no particular way to do guitar ergonomics and some models are very different from others

Investing into a few lessons with a good teacher can save you a TONS a trouble later on.
No need to use thick strings as a beginner. Start on .9
Have fun and find a balance between practicing and playing.
Use your ears. Learn by them. Learn how to tune by them. Never learn songs from some midi playing apps or similar bullshit.

Play with ease. No extra unnecessary tension.
Start paying attention to rhytm as early as possible. Tap your foot to the beat all the time while playing.
>>
>>69766193
Will do.
>>
>>69765996
Only if you're willing to drop an extra $70 to replace the tuners and frets.

I owned one for a brief period of time. Sounded alright after I replaced the bridge pup with a lollartron, but it never stayed in tune longer than a couple of minutes of playing.

My Tele is dirty as fuck because I actually play it a lot and it gets use. I prefer well-played and worn looking guitars to ones that look like they belong to someone who plays thirty minutes a day. That said, It'd take a lot to make me purchase a used guitar.

1)Feel, groove and dynamic is pretty subconscious stuff. It gets under your skin from whatever you play with. You dont want to have a midi groove.
2)It is impossible to learn nuances and details from midi. There are none.
3)If song is too fast for you, practice parts with a metronome or slow it down (even win media player can do it)
4) and that is most importat, by getting tabs, you are not forced to learn by ears. Ear training and developement is most crucial for any long term improvement of any musician. Your ears are the limit. Each song learned from tabs is wasted oportunity. Hard way is most beneficial.

>You dont want to have a midi groove.
midi can pull off completely impossible polyrhythms, show me someone who can play septuplet, quintuplets, triplets at the same time over a 4/4 beat. It's only limited in feeling by the composer itself.
>It is impossible to learn nuances and details from midi. There are none.
MIDI has dynamics, and some tab/sheet reading programs like Guitar pro highlight them so that you don't miss out, you can also do grace notes, and triplet grooves are harder for a beginner to conceive.

As for ear training, you're not necessarily missing out by learning from tabs, it's a completely different field and is more linked to jamming out or practicing scales/harmonies than learning songs, and if you're playing some niche stuff you've got next to no chances as a beginner to find back right way to play the songs.
>>

>>69765696
A setup is like taking your car to the shop for an oil change/tune up. Make sure everything is still as it should be (Intonation, action is where you like it, neck isn't warping or some other bullshit etc...) it's a good idea to learn how to do it yourself like others said

Dont be dense motherfucker. Take an advice.
Groove has nothing to do with polyrhythms. Feeling have nothing to do with composition itself. You are mixing terms.
Guitar pro dynamic is a joke. We live in a wonderfull time of the internet. There is enought recordings of various masters of any instrument and music genders with unique play style and sound for several lifetimes and you choose to play along with a fucking calculator beeping.

What? Learning scales is eartraining now? Ok, there is nothing bad about being newbie. But you are also really misinformed and stubborn at the same time. And thats a shitty combination.

go used to start imo. you can maybe find a whole starter pack on your local craigslist (if you dont live in the boonies) for like $100.

or you can get a use/d/shit bass amp on CL for beginners for like $40 and spend more on a guitar.

generally buy used until you get decent and either 1) quit or 2) get better and find something you love and will spend decent money on to last you a long time.

post a local CL if you want and we can help you shop

>Groove has nothing to do with polyrhythms.
Groove is just applied polyrhythms and uneven distributions of notes. Feeling has to do with composition, you can completely write a midi drum track that feels like a drummer because the beat of the snare isn't properly set on the subdivision.
Yes, there are recordings, but listening to the recording and actually catching onto the subtelities of it are two different things, and in that case you're talking about beginners, which are going to be clueless as to those subtelities.
And yes, learning scales and internalising them is ear training, you're learning how to build melodies using a set of specific notes, which you'll then apply to see fit on ongoing chord progressions.

You're basically talking shit about MIDI and the technical capacities of actual learning tools. Don't take for account that every body is going to be accurate and critical enough to learn correctly by ear.
And yes, you have to play "along a fucking calculator beeping" if you want your band to sound good, unless you're playing ambiant.

>>69767142

I've been playing for about a year and I still adjust mine. Most manufacturers have a recommended action height with each guitar, but I go double the action (still not that high) to minimise fret buzz (I often play quite hard) and maximise sustain, it doesn't bug me too much, although I used to hate it and just live through the fret buzz. It's personal preference, honestly.

yeah i just want to maximize that $90 for shit i need / could use as a beginner.

i bought an esp 1000 with duncans so i have a solid guitar that isn't a piece of shit.

Of the intonation is shit, tell him off the bat. Also know what string Gauge you use. Other than that, most guitar tech guys are pretty chill so even if you are a complete sperglord they probably won't care
>>
>>69767142
Go the lowest you can without fret buzz (important; have your truss rod set correctly) and see.
If you tend to hit the strings hard and get fret buzz, set it a bit higher
>>
>>69767219
imo, and imo only, you should get something like this for dirt cheap. as long as it works it should last you a few years until you get decent. look for deals like this on CL before you go to GC. they won't ever sell you something like this for cheap (at least i think).

so get a cheap amp that just plays your bass, and then spend all of your GC credit on a nicer used bass from them since you don't have to worry about getting a beginners combo pack anymore.

It is hard at first because if they're more experienced than you the song changes pretty fast.

Practice your phrasing and your basic major and minor scales. Also try to train your ear by improving at home to jam tracks and humming what you intend to play as you play it. It makes a big difference and connects the music in your head to your ear and out to your fingers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KorP9lq1voU&ab_channel=SteveStine

this is for guitar but still might be pretty useful to you
>>
>>69767163
If midi drum track sounds to you like a real drummer, you should really really do something about your ears. Learn a new scale, that will do it.
(you can call anything eartraining. But interval/chord recognition and learning by ears is by far the most intensive)

Iam not talking about listening to a rocordings. I talk about learning from them and playing along them. Yes, almost nobody can learn a tune 100% perfectly by ears on the first try and thats why it is so important to train and develop that ability.

>you have to play "along a fucking calculator beeping" if you want your band to sound

I really hope you mean metronome or DAW click.

Also, I still havent heard about any advantage of this style of learning except of "its easy". (Yes, its easiest way to learn almost nothing. Congrats.).

>If midi drum track sounds to you like a real drummer, you should really really do something about your ears.
You can make a midi drum track have more groove than a beginner drummer playing on an electronic kit with the same samples, and it's not exactly hard.
>But interval/chord recognition and learning by ears is by far the most intensive
If you don't play the scale's chords and study its intervals, then you're missing the whole fucking point of practicing a scale. But yeah sure just practice always your different intervals chromatically, that way they'll end up as complete mush in your memory.
>Iam not talking about listening to a rocordings. I talk about learning from them and playing along them.
Just like you can do with tabs and sheet.
>Yes, almost nobody can learn a tune 100% perfectly by ears on the first try
yet most sight reading proffessionals can nail the song on their first try with a simple sheet
>I really hope you mean metronome or DAW click.

>Also, I still havent heard about any advantage of this style of learning except of "its easy".

Depends on your style of rock. If you need an aggressive, driving sound for the bass to rumble through heavy distortion, stick with round. Flat is a more mellow and smooth tone that really melts notes together is a grooving line. They sound really good with a pick if that's your thing.

That doesn't make any sense. It's just splitting and giving you more options. I don't know why more companies don't do that. You're buying it directly from them, they make them overseas, and they aren't exactly a well known brand. Their prices look perfectly fine.

Can we post recordings here? This is the first thing I've ever put together that I'd call music so I just wanted to see what some people thought. I know it's far from perfect but I do like it.

Oh also, keep in mind this was recorded on my phone and "edited" with Audacity. I'm absolutely an amateur at this.

Advice is welcome buy

Again. Gave up on the JC-120, noisy as shit.
>>
>>69771929
Did you make the board anon?
>>
whats the cheapest, best acoustic-electric guitar I can get? or just an electric would be fine. Not really sure how much I would start on, $100?
>>
>>69771959
Yeah, I'm too cheap for a proper board. Looks good but it's kind of flimsy.
>>
>>69771988
It does look good and I'm sure the flimsiness is from how long it is (which is what I was gonna ask about) do you have a center support through it?

I made this >>69767539
>>
>>69771929
>JC-120, noisy as shit.
is also loud as fuck so
>>
>>69772031
Didn't put a center support and yeah, that could be why it's a bit flimsy. It's actually not flimsy per se, when it's seated it's quite stable, but the feet I made (out of long screws inserted into the wood and rubber feet, basically) aren't very sturdy and if I were to transport if often of stomp on it very hard, it would break. Most of the time it sits still at my studio so I never bothered to go further.

I've thought about building another one (3 squarer rows instead of 2 long ones) but it would fuck up my pedal order and I'm out of expensive solderless cable to make it happen.

Yours look pretty great and it's a simpler and more effective design, I like it.

>>69772049
Very true. For gigs it wouldn't bother me, but for recording and especially home use, it does. Imma chill on wanting another amp, stereo can wait.
>>

I'm looking to get a guitar & amp. Been looking around and saving up for the past few months trying to figure out what I want, and the amount of models and brands is pretty frustrating when I'm trying to compare them all. And, given that I'm a poorfag, it needs to be withing a certain cost. I have been considering a Squire telecaster if I can't get my hands on a mexi telecaster. But I'm playing anything from blues to metal so I don't really know why I would opt for that instead of an Ibanez or something. Recommendations?
>>
>>69772723
Too busy for my eyes. If I wanted to pay more attention to the guitar than the music itself I would buy it.
>>

As cheesy as A7X's image can be, the styling on the Synyster Gates signature is so unique I can't help but like it a little. Without the skull inlays/art it would look even better. If you're into rock/metal and have the chops to back up the flashiness, go for it. I've sat down with one before and they're really well-built instruments.

Depends on your definition of good, I guess. I'm not a very technical player but I've played for 11 or 12 years (typing that made me feel a little old). I may pick up electric again since I still come back and listen to heavy stuff every once in a while.

Making music when I have time. Good music? Who knows
