Dadrock faggot here. Until recently had a dim view on electronic music, but a friend of mine convinced me to give it a shot.
I've found I'm quite taken with electro and detroit techno, like Man Parrish, Robert Hood and Jeff Mills. Where do I go from here? I don't want to be caught in a rut. What's adjacent to those genres that I can more gradually introduce house and breakbeat?

That's a very, very expansive topic and I'm off to bed. Have a bump though.
Have you tried any house or breakbeat? Why don't you just dive right in, I don't think they're particularly challenging (or at least, any more challenging than techno).

I did, I didn't get into it. Maybe it was just the examples I listened to, I dunno. House seemed way too simple and breakbeat seemed way too scattershot.
Recommendations?

listen to complete works of Stockhausen
listen to Jean Michel Jarre and Brian Eno simultaneously
return for further instructions

Done. Now what?

Who did you try?

If you go to the RYM overall charts for house and breakbeat, I just went with the top five for either.
I don't have many resources for recommendations outside of that.

OK. The thing to keep in mind about EDM genres is that they are not like rock, and they should not be judged by albums. The top albums are fine, but that's not where the good stuff is. EDM is about singles, and in longer form, it's about mixes. Go back to those RYM charts, change that dropdown from "albums" to "DJ mixes", then try again. Especially for that house chart, yikes (Underworld is fucking great though)

Also, your go-to resource shouldn't be RYM. Try:
>Discogs.com (was initially built for EDM, has expanded to include all music but is still very heavy on the electronic side)
>ResidentAdvisor, FACT, The Wire (magazines, reviews)
>/bleep/ (although people will tell you it's shit, it's nice to go in there and get a general sense of what it's all about)
breakbeat is corny. check out TRAX records from chicago and strictly rhythm records. they're really good old school house labels. i'm not that into techno. look up green velvet, dj skull, thomas brinkmann, takkyu ishino, joey beltram.
dig a lot

don't bother. i went through the same phase a few years ago. i even saw a jeff mills live set. i've grown out of that now and I'm back to rock mostly and some jazz. I grew out of hip hop too.
