Looking for more bands/albums like pic related.
This still remains my favorite album of all time. The first time I listened to it I was just so blown away and I still can't quite get over it. The beautiful female vocals, impressive music, and then haunting lyrics create a really powerful lasting image.
I've tried listening to supposed stuff like this, but nothing else seems to capture its spirit. It makes me wonder if people listened to the first minute of Diana, went "dude weed lmao", and just group it up with all the other acid bands. The other things I've listened to are either not as catchy, lack the complexity, or are missing that element of beauty the album will randomly go to. It never quite tips too far passed the edge and I really enjoy how seamlessly it can move back and forth.
The only song I've heard that reminded me of it in a meaningful way is Genesis' "In the Cage." It has that similar sense of urgency and despair, but also dips back into catchy tunes.
For reference, here is one of the songs

It captures a lot of what I'm looking for too. At parts it sounds haunting and then at others it almost sounds beautiful and uplifting, until you take notice to the subject matter.
I like freak folk such as Comus, Exuma the list goes on
Ive been looking for the same thing for like 9 months and I havent been able to find anything with the same feeling as Comus
Earlier AnCo. Try Sung Tongs, Here Comes the Indian, and Campfire Songs.

I tried looking into Freak Folk and Acid Folk and neither were really delivering what I wanted. I think often times the issue was that I found music without compelling lyrics or where they were too dark, missing the variety Comus had in First Utterance.

I'll try these out. Thanks anon.

Yeah I've been looking for around that length too. I think maybe in the end we just have to accept that the reason we care so much is because they are unique.
At least their third album was good. I try to forget about the second.
Honestly I don't think there's anything that compares to it in terms of complexity, beauty or catchiness which is why it's my favourite folk album. Simon Finn to me is the closest as it has the same level of intensity and memorability, just not the progressive edge.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations guys.

There isn't anything like it...just things that can capture certain parts, but nothing gets the whole thing which really fucking sucks. You would think some neofolk band would have done it already (and maybe they have, but I haven't found it yet).

Comus itself is so obscure that if there was another band like them it would probably take some exploring to find it

But there not that obscure anymore, every neofolk band probably has that album memorized
Personally, though First Utterance is one of my all-time favorite albums, my favorite album from 1971 is actually a different progressive folk album (Ame Debout)
I believe you're going to be out of luck finding anything close. I'm guessing you're already familiar with Current 93? (which really isn't that close anyway)

Im into prog-folk. Only thing that comes close is Broselmaschine - s/t. Though thats more rooted in melancholy than comus' schizophrenia

Current 93 did do a pretty okay cover of Diana
OP, the best I can recommend you is a brazilian psych-folk album called Paêbirú. Still kinda far from what Comus sounds like but you might like it.

I made this thread not expecting a single post. You guys have made me very happy! Also I mentioned it in my opening post, but this song does give me some similar vibes especially to The Prisoner
