>>
>>69719462
I like both, but for different tasks

I use a BD-2 blues driver for OD and switch back and forth when I need an accessable clean channel, but if I just want to play overdriven I'll turn it up.
But it depends heavily on the amp for me
>>
>>69719419
super expensive luthier guitars (in some cases) = insane quality, all kinds of options available
super expensive corporate guitars (in almost every cases) = overpriced, can't get exactly what you want (you'll never get a strat from the gibson custom shop, while a luthier can do strats or lps without any concern)

>>69719461

I never said I agree with it, any guitar over 2k is a fucking scam, but they do use the best woods in the bin on them so that makes up most of the cost. Not that wood fucking matters other than look and feel.

>>
>>69719578
Yeah but at least when wood is an aesthetical and cosmetical argument and can't be changed, coil tap isn't an incredible thing, even mid range (~500€) Schecters have them.
Plus, so many guitarists don't even bother touching their volume/tone control that it barely matters.

>>69719605
Probably something around the 300€ mark. VM Squiers, used MiMs, Indo Ibanez/Schecters/whatever. I wouldn't trust anything else to hold up against anything rough.
Or if you play punk, a first act or a behringer guitar.

But his arguments are even worse, saying that you don't need to write down anything if you play meal/blooz/rock, and that there some successful players who don't know how (without quoting a single one, nice trick)
but yeah sure don't write anything down, improvise your chorus changes and mess everything up when you take a winter break from rehearsing and forget parts of the song

First off thx for the Hal Leonard bass.

Second I am new to bass and have 2 questions.

Got a Yamaha trbx and it has 3 knobs, 1 for the precision pickup, 1 for jazz pickup, and one for "tone"?

What do these knobs actually do?

Second question is what do the bass, mid and treble knobs on my amp do. How do I tune these for specific songs
>>
I hate the snobs who spend thousands of dollars on high end gear and obsess over toanz to sound like their favourite bands when said bands clearly only uses cheap and accessible gear.
>>
>>69722016
What bands use shit gear?

I agree obsessing over tone is a bit stupid though when artists are pumping through many thousands worth of amp/stacks live and spend months producing and fine tuning their part recordings.
>>
>>69721962

Hey man, nice to see your joining the low end legion.

The knobs for the P pickup and the Jazz pickup are volume knobs, you can turn each one up and down as you see fit for the sound you're looking for. Tone knob filters out the treblier capacitors, making your tone bassier and darker the more you roll it off.

Bass, mid and treble are the tone controls on your amp, they're what your bass sound will be founded upon after your pickups and tone knob position. You use the three to amplify or reduce certain frequencies on your bass, it's the reason so many different bass tones exist, like how different bass tones are in metal, dub and jazz, for example. Move them around until you find your desired sound.

Are Album Tab books worth it? I would really love to learn some of the intricate stuff some specific guitarist do, but i don't want to support at sites like ultimate guitar (who 70% of the time have the wrong tab)

If you don't want to use tab they include notation if you wanna try your hand at music reading.
>>

So i picked this off a forum

20hz - 80hz = ........ Low Bass
80hz - 320hz = ...... Hi Bass, also referred to as Midbass.
320hz - 1280hz = ... Midrange
1280hz - 5120hz = .. High Midrange/Low Treble
5120hz - 20840hz = . High Treble

But from what I understand the bass only goes from around 40 Hz to 400 Hz

So what exactly is the mid and treble knobs doing on an amplifier if those frequencies are not being played directly?

This is driving me nut
How do people keep playing games like guitar hero and rockband without moving on to a real instrument?
All they talk about is score and difficulty
Do they not like music? Are they emotionless? Are they brain dead? I don't get it
>>
I'm thinking of buying an Epiphone les paul custom to get back into music. I haven't played in a while and I've been itching to start again. opinions?
>>
>>69722618
Ive dabbled in the Hal Leonard bass and guitar books for Nirvana tabs.
They are definitely better than ultimate guitar in terms of your timing, key, measure, beats, and rhythm. However they usually only tab out say the first 4 bars of a song then show the chorus and post "rythym figure 1, simile" which means play what we just showed you but it is going to change and we arent going to show you the rest. So it gives you the basic rhythm but lets you decipher the rest.
>>
>>69722698
Awwwwe shit! Is there a place online where I can download this?
>>
>>69722663

The amp still has to be able to process the upper register on your bass, that is to say harmonics and other nice shit the pickup magnets can pick up.

The Hz range each knob controls depends on the instrument the amp is for.
>>
>>69722698
Seconding this, owned quite a few and there's always song tabs you won't find online. Even better if you can read sheet music since basically every artist has an official songbook out there

>>
>>69722663
These can vary a lot depending on who made the bass, and they seem weird as 5kHz-20kHz is cymbal territory.
As for bass range, it's a little bit more complex than that, these are the fundamentals of the notes that you're playing, but the ear will also pick the harmonics of it, so when you're hearing a low B on a 5 string, you're not only hearing 30ish Hz.
>>
>>69722776

You need two to post here.
>>
>>69722667
thank m8, I'll try this out.

I can play some Chet Atkins stuff, the left hand is absolutely fine, but I can't help but feel as if I'm doing something wrong with the right hand. my fingers just keep getting hung up on the strings, and I'm thinking maybe my right hand placement is wrong, though it doesn't seem to be.
>>
>>69722704
I didn't realize anybody still played those kinds of games. Seemed like a fad. I had a lot of fun with them when they first came out even though I already played an instrument.

I eventually quit in a moment of self reflection I had after spending about an hour trying to learn the solos in Hangar 18 in practice mode.

Steel string, though a long time ago I studied classical (when I was like 14) and played on nylon.

I don't quite know how to explain it, it happens when playing with a pick too sometimes, I can't do stuff like tremolo or faster strumming reliably (for reference https://vimeo.com/11404399). If I hold the pick any looser, it a) just slides so far away toward my palm that it's the tip of my index finger and side of the thumb that are touching the strings and/or b) won't go through the strings, it just gets stuck. Though I can play most single note stuff just fine. At first I thought I'm playing to strong, but is it possible to play too lightly, i.e. not firmly enough?

As to fingerpicking, my fingers sometimes get stuck or hung up on the strings, like I'm fighting with the strings though I'm not really digging in very deep or anything. It's especially problematic when I'm doing a forward roll on the last 4 strings, it just feels kind of ''crowded'' if that makes sense, and it won't come out right.

Another thing is, when playing fingerstyle, should you pluck with the very tip of the fingers, or more with pads?

Appreciate any help.

I started to learn about chord-tone soloing. One thing I'm trying to figure out is how the blues tonality works. For instance, minor pentatonic soloing over a major chord progression is common in rock and blues.

I worked out that in I-IV-V, of the I chord, the major third is not part of the minor pentatonic scale. Of the IV chord, again its third is not part of the minor pentatonic (with root of I) and of the V chord, both the third and the fifth are not part of the minor pentatonic (of I).

Yet many guitarists apparently just solo the minor pentatonic (of I) over the entire progression. So my question is, when you use chord tones, you usually play chord tones on the downbeat and passing tones or neighbor tones on the upbeats.

If you're on a V chord and you're using the chord tones + the minor pentatonic of I, what set of tones would you use as the downbeat? The chord tones? It sounds weird when I try to do it this way.

Any resources explaining these type of ideas?

I'm making a winter project of building an amp with my buddy who's really good at wood working. But we're kinda clueless on the electronics and stuff and what kind of speakers we'd wanna put in it. I'm not really sure what to get, we're gonna be using the dimensions of an Orange 2x12, what do we need to get?
>>
>>69725132
If you bought the Orange amp you could gut it and stick it in the cabinet you where going to build, it would so professional and people would think it was dead fancy
>>
>>69725132
Speakers first and foremost
>>
>>69725101
as a dedicated rhythm guitarist left/right muting depends entirely on the style you're playing.

how on earth are you going to exclude or mute strings in fast tempo slash patterns?
>>
>>69725225
left hand muting, push simply the index a little further and you're blocking the string up from the string you're fretting, no weird wrist angle involved, and you can go back to playing melodic lines within a second.
>>
>>69725132
Just the amp cabinet? Building an amplifier is a whole new ballgame, a lot to keep track of. Even people experienced with electronics may have difficulty.

As far as wiring the cabinet, you need to know the output impedance needed by the amplifier its going to be used with. Generally 4, 8, or 16 ohms.

Speakers in series double in impedance(2 8 ohms in series make a 16 ohm load).

Speakers in parallel are half the impedance(2 8 ohms on parallel make a 4 ohm load).

So if your amp needs an 8 ohm load, wire 2 4ohm speakers in series or wire to 16 ohm speakers in parallel.

The next important thing is power handling, you dont want speakers that can handle the output power of your amp. Its cumulative, mostly. Things can happen. So of you have a 100watt amp head(that will likely peak over 100watts if you dime it) then 2 80watt speakers will probably cut it. 2 50 watt speakers may not.

You can put a 40 watt speaker next to an 80watt speaker, there should be minimal perceived difference in sound.
>>
>>69725101
You're making me want to fret things properly now
Playing a D/F# chord really fucks me up when I use my thumb
>>
>>69725312

*you dont want speakers that CAN'T handle your amps power output

*there should be no perceivable difference in VOLUME, not sound

Thanks a lot. I'm just building the cab since I dont know shit about building an amp and I already have one.

So specifically I'm looking to build a 2x12 that can handle 120 watts (I'm playing through an Or100 head), the cabinet I'm using is two celestion vintage 30s that are 16 ohms that I'm splitting and running at 8 ohms. My question is what do I need and what kinds of speakers should I be looking at.
>>
>>69725369
Oh yeah also if you're not using the index, you can just pseudo-barre the rest of the strings and mute them all at once, it also works great when doing single string leads.
Or you can leave your major finger hanging over it, kinda like if you were almost fretting it or doing a natural harmonic.
Apart from a few cases (giant hands or narrow necks), using the thumb doesn't give you any sort of advantage and limits your reach a lot.

sorry for asking to be spoon fed but do you know any textbooks or websites where i could learn this off of? the book im using is really basic and only explains modes and simplified chords
>>
>>69725650
meh, I decided it's as pointless as downtuning for more chugs, it barely even feels different for just one guitar, maybe for an orchestra but for a three/four piece ?

>>69725665
pick random songs and learn how to find the root based on the chord progression
then from playing the root, you add some more syncopation depending on the drums, maybe a couple notes from the arpeggio of the chord they're playing and eventually if you're confident enough, small fills
That's how you jam bass for most genres, in principle it is rather simple.

>>69725708
that's extremely stupid to do
in a normal playing situation, guitar, drums and bass will have a sharp and almost instant attack, meaning that if these don't line up, the band sounds sloppy.

>I started to learn about chord-tone soloing. One thing I'm trying to figure out is how the blues tonality works.
Depends on what kind of blues. Most common are Minor Blues and Major (Dominant) Blues.

It sounds like you're talking about the Major Blues, so let's say you're in A so your I, IV, and V are A7, D7, and E7, respectively.

The minor third you're talking about is more like a #9 in the context of a Dominant chord. Common jazzy alterations on Dominant chords are sharped or flatted 5ths and sharped or flatted 9ths. That's why what we usually think of as the minor third works on the I chord. It's the #9. In Blues it's a very common move to bend this note slightly sharp to almost meet the major third. You can also mess around with playing both the minor third (#9 here) and the major third one after the other.

Over the IV chord, D7 in this case, what was our minor third or #9 is now the b7 of the D7 chord. This also makes the same note work great because it's a chord tone of D7.

Over the V chord, its role changes again, this time to that of a #5 of E7. As I said, #5 is another one of these jazzy alterations that can be made to a dominant chord, so that's why it still sounds like it fits, though on this chord it's more of a tension note.

You should learn arpeggios to really be able to find all the chord tones that sound consonant, because arpeggios are simply the notes of the chord played individually.

So if you play an A Dominant arpeggio over A7, you're playing all the notes of A7 individually and can feel pretty good about landing on any of them.

Same with D Dominant arpeggio over D7, and E Dominant arpeggio over E7.

Somebody correct me if I fucked up somewhere.

Okay, music is not like a video game where the learning progression is continually moving to more and more difficult stuff. That can be a component of it but it's more important that you play WELL, cleanly, on time, with good technique so each note sounds its best. For bass, you really want to be extra diligent about always playing in the pocket. Guitarists can get away with playing a little in front of or behind the beat for effect but that's only possible because the bass and the drummer are holding the thing together while they do so. That is just the nature of rhythm vs. melody sections of a band.

So keep learning stuff you like that may seem easy on the surface but learn it perfectly. Not 85% can get through it good enough. Perfect. If there are problems with your technique; vibrato not so good, legato playing has inconsistent tone between notes (hammer on/pull off/slide), muting isn't down so you have sympathetic string noise going on, etc.

In other words, git gud. And recognize that there is a whole lot more to it than just playing faster more complicated stuff.

Drop in to local music shop and ask if they have any extra guitar boxes. Usually they do. Shipments of new guitars all come in those boxes and the stores just toss them in to the cardboard recycling.
>>
>>69728893
buy a cheap shit hard case and bump your price up accordingly

much easier than having to deal with the shit of of a guitar broken in transit
>>

why do bassists lead the drummer? they're the ones with an autopilot thumping bass drum.
>>
>>69729012
They don't. Or not usually unless the song calls for that. I'm not sure what your question is. The bass and drums should be in sync, tight cohesive unit of rhythm. Drummer dictates tempo for the whole band.
>>
>>69729055
well afaik it's common practice for drummers to have a direct feed of the bassist.

if anything shouldn't it be the other way round? would seem easier to play melodies and accentuate root notes if you're playing to the kick beat.

If the drummer keeps time for the whole band who keeps time for the drummer? What if the drummer throws himself and everybody else off causing everybody else to scramble to keep up in the midst of a gig.
Well now that is no longer a problem.
Introducing the Pulse by Soundbrenner Technologies. Now you can set a tempo and every member of the band wearing a Pulse will feel the beat and be perfectly synchronized!
>>
>>69729165
In semi professional and up settings is common practice for everyone to have a click track in their inner ear. High level performers often have cues

"Hook-2-3-4" for example then back to just a click

Thats just to keep it from getting scratched before you buy it and its your responsibility. Take it off.

Drives me nuts when people won't peel this shit off a guitar. It's like those old plastic sofa covers that old people seem to like for some unknown reason.

My personal theory is they make scat videos in their spare time.

Don't be an elderly scat fetishist. Peel your guitar. It's for the best.

My buddy used to do that, stop abruptly. We were just jamming, but he would be baled out of his mind. It happened so often cause i was having too much fun messing with him. Wed be grooving along in 4/4, then id play only 3 beats and start repeating the passage.

Actually worked pretty well, the stuff that we were coming up with was a lot like isis, but slower and weird. The out of place pauses sounded cool. I was playing through 2 cranked jcm half stacks.

That's terribly notated - having the dotted eighth note carrying over a beat is poor rhythmic spelling.

Better done like pic related

Different anon here. Yes. Fret work is kinda unfinished, you can feel nubs. If you get that sorted out its solid. Only sub $1000 guitar ive ever owned that isnt getting new pickups. Needed no set up outside of lowering the action, and i got it pretty low.

Yeah man I HIGHLY recommend it. Sounds JUST as good as the big one, and it sounds amazing even into his janky crate solid state. Wampler makes incredible shit, I really want a Triple Wreck, but I dont have that kinda dosh for that one. Also try out a Soverign if you can, not that it's better or anything, but if you want a different flavor of distortion that is in the same range, you might enjoy it!

Thinking about buying myself a pedalboard for christmas. I don't have any pedals atm. is this a good one? Seems like it has every sound I would need
>>
>>69730290

What? No. Get a multi effects unit if you want a bunch of stuff to mess with. Otherwise just buy the pedals you want, velcro them to a plank of wood, get a daisy chain wall-wart or a pedal power source, done.

>>
>>69730290
Never buy a multi effect. It's better to dedicate a pedal to one good sound instead of getting a bunch of mediocre ones. And don't buy a board, make one out of wood or something. I made mine out of lexan plastic and 8020
>>
>>69730373
Not the amps, the multi effects pedals. The line 6 one is the best bang for buck one that there is, I recommend it. also I have the RP250 and its fantastic just for looking at different types of effects that you can use. I wouldnt gig with one ( a multi effect) but they're helpful to have around

>>69730405
I agree partially, I would recommend buying one if a beginner, because it helps to try out everything.
>>

>buying pedals

No multifx are the way to go.
What happens if you're playing a set and the first song calls for a long delay and the chorus needs a shorter delay? You bend over and fiddle knobs halfway through the song?

What if the breakdown needs a chorus, phaser and reverb? You just tap tap tap while trying to play and then tap tap tap them off? the beauty of multifx is you can make your settings at home and just tap once to change patches that can change your whole sound all at once.
The cheap multifx probably sound bad for giging but you can go direct without an amp and its passable. some of the more expensive multifx units sound great like the helix or ax8 etc
>>
cheap multi effects pedals don't sound all that great. if youre going to that way you really need to pay a lot for a good one.
>>
>>69730619

Don't listen to this retard >>69730421, Line 6 amps are absolute shit same with the multi effects. I'm all for cheap gear as long as its good, but with line 6 you get 500 effects and every single one is garbage. Not a bang for your buck...

If you want to get into effects its kind of a pain in the ass, but you have to assemble a board with the pedals you like. I actually built my own out of some left over wood and Velcro and shit.
