A good chunk of NMH songs are generic chord progressions (with interesting instrumentation and production), and honestly I think your friend is right as a first time listener to almost dismiss it, because he simply hears the music and hasn't taken into consideration the clever lyricism, the raw production, and the overall sound which was a call back to more traditional acoustic music and punk composition which was a much less advanced but rougher sounding style which benefitted the album (a sound which is much more common place today than it was when ITAOTS was released, especially in indie circles). If I was to jump to conclusions, I would probably assume the guy you were talking to was judging songs on technical composition, which a vidya soundtrack probably contains more of (especially FF) than NMH. That doesn't mean that vidya soundtracks are some mathy masterpieces that break the mold, but they are probably more pleasing to the ear at first.

Saw a screencap of a /b/ album thread once that was literally all dadrock, avenged sevenfold-tier metal, and rhcp/foo fighters stadium rock. So exactly what most middle school kids listen to.

They're not even up to "I'm 16 and I ironically listen to death grips and nmh" yet

/mlp/ is pretty bad
aside from the fandom-made music, they also really like super edgy death and thrash metal, as well as macho rock
I have seen a few patrishes lurking there but for the most part it is cancer upon cancer

/v/ likes video game soundtracks, The Protomen, and Daft Punk

/a/ likes anime soundtracks, vocaloid and similar sounding techno-y/dance-y pop songs sung by some kawaii desu girl

I'd say they all have equally shit taste. I bet /m/ has the best taste in music.

I'm not sure why there is so much stigma against soundtracks on this board. Sure soundtrack-only autists are annoying but some soundtracks are great pieces of music. Shows like Hidamari Sketch have some great tracks on their OST, and I remember seeing Cowboy Bebop's OST being recommended on some essential jazz charts here. There is also Nujabes, and while I found out about him before I watched Samurai Champloo, his albums are pretty good and from what I've heard on the Samurai Champloo soundtrack, his tracks are pretty good on there as well. I also remember hearing some good vidya soundtracks.
