Look up ragtime guitar lessons on youtube. I can't play that style very well but that's only because I don't dedicate enough time to it.

"Deep River Blues" by Doc Watson is an easy one to start with
>>
>>69559919
Transcribe some solos. When people ask how do I sound like this person or that, the best way is to learn some of their songs. Then look at the patterns and find smaller patterns and disect it. Then look at their influences and go listen. If you wanted to draw like Dr Seuss I would sketch some of his drawings and then look up artists that he liked to figure out where the inspiration came from. If all else fails drop acid and draw what you see lol
>>
>>69559952
I think I am pretty good and I've didn't start until I was a freshman.
>>
>>69559952
Heavy theorietical study is only gonna happen if you actually want to be an expert, damn hard work.

Just have fun with it. Find a band or some shit and jam, all you need are to be able to play a few chords and basic scales

Reposting because I put too much effort into the post for the guy asking about Megadeth solo style:

>>69559421
Let me try to break it down.

The rhythm of the Symphony of Destruction solo section is at its core is just an E5 power chord static vamp. This gives you a lot of freedom to hit a lot of notes and have them sound pretty decent.

The solo starts out with an E minor pentatonic/blues kind of thing with a neighbor note half-step bend to the 7th scale degree at one point, and he lands on the flat 5 pretty hard, then flirts with it a bit, blues style.

https://clyp.it/g5420sw5

Then he goes into an F#m7b5 (F# half diminished) arpeggio. F#m7b5 is diatonic to the key of E minor, so he's still doing the E minor thing here, just playing with some more ear-catching notes and intervals.

https://clyp.it/5fopvyz5

Then he does another Em pentatonic thing, stretching out to a 3 note per string pentatonic shape and throwing in the natural 6 from the E Dorian scale as well as the 9th for flavor.

https://clyp.it/za3rh0ce

Then he plays a little sequence through some inversions of a G major triad (still diatonic to the key of E minor) and ends the phrase by landing on the flat 5 of the E minor blues scale once again.

https://clyp.it/rsziwtlb

Then he noodles around in E minor pentatonic/blues again, this time throwing in the flat 6 degree which is diatonic to E natural minor.

https://clyp.it/tqtb5ohz

Then he wraps things up basically playing some E minor pentatonic Chuck Berry sounding licks sped up pretty fast and ends the solo by using the flat 5 again to play a tritone doublestop sounding thing.

Also there might be some dual guitar fuckery, like one playing an E and the other playing an F, or just playing the same note twice on two different strings.
Varg Vikernes does it in a few songs and it sounds similar, I can only think of Keliohesten right now but I'm pretty sure there's some others.

That seems like an interesting concept, forcing your muscle memory to prefer making smaller movements through that.

I sometimes try to make small movements as possible when tremelo picking but I often find the more I try to do it the "weaker" the sound that results

I hear that this goes away after a while and you can get the tone where you want it and you can put the accents where you want them and such, but you have to suffer through that breaking-in period first.

But I haven't mastered it myself so that's just hearsay. I think I'll work on this tonight though.

Is this your first amp? I don't know about the Katanas but I can tell you something about the Mustang. My friend was just starting out not too long ago and bought the little 20watt version. He found it exasperating. It has 24 preset banks that require extensive tweaking in their program. 17 amps with 12 different cabinets, and 4 slots for gain, modulation, delay and reverb pedals/racks, each one of those effects has 9-14 different pedals each. And that's just the little one. The 2x12 model has 100(!) presets you need to fix.

Overwhelming for a beginner he told me. You really need to spend serious time with the EQ levels, the pedal order, the pedals themselves, the cabinet choices, amps and so on. He gave it to me and bought a normal amp instead.

vox vt20x, then buy a regular amp after two months. all modeling amps sound decent these days, but they all sound annoyingly digital. cleans are good across the board, but distortion sounds a bit limp.

2.And what's about Fender/Squire, in your opinion?

Anything above the les paul studio is on par with most Gibsons. the QC is hit and miss with both companies but id rather not risk getting a bad Gibson.

As for squier, they are great guitars. but the current prices are ridiculous. The CV and VM series are on par with the low end USA and MIM guitars. almost as good as CIJ squiers from the 80s.

Yeah, it's an S470, picked it up cheap, and it plays great, and the ZR bridge is rock solid no matter how hard you whack it.

The "rust" on your pic is mostly an easy fix - replace the pickup rings, they're just plastic with a metal coating.

The wear on the bridge looks to be mainly gunk with a bit of wear. As long as the bearings are still okay, it should last more or less forever

Also, for some songs, I have to play bass while she sings and five strings does nothing but fuck me up.

Bassists need to quit chasing waterfalls, but I can't blame them for trying.

I have a tin ear. I don't think I'll ever be able to recognize keys/chords by ear, especially anything other than plain maj/min

But with your guitar in your hand, it's easy as fuck. You should be able to hear what chord feels like the "root" or "resolve". It should take you 10 seconds to find the fret on the low E. That's almost always the key. From there, it's almost always (blues) minor (pentatonic) or major.

Over 80% of rock/pop songs you hear are going to be minor, and usually E, A, D G, or B.

Off topic, but you seem to know basses.

My DI for bass is too quiet. I replaced the bass battery. Jacked up the gain on the interface, put it in instrument mode... still can't get a thump out of it.

Suggestions?
>>
>>69573372
I wouldn't know a solution off the top of my head. Try to isolate the issue, is the bass working normal through an amp? Is the cable working with other instruments? Is the audio interface working with a different guitar? Etc.
>>
>>69568833
You'll just have to upgrade them. The microphone will record audio but it will be low quality (and not low quality in a good way either). The headphones will just be cheap in general and will probably break after a few months of consistent use.

Maybe they're actually great products, I haven't actually looked at their specs or anything. But I highly doubt it.

Just do some more leg work, do some more research and get some decent stand alone monitors and a decent mic.

Do most people write guitar parts, then lyrics?

How important to you is the honest/integrity of the lyrics vs how well the notes/melody/impression of lyrics?

Do you ever write stuff you don't relate to just because it sounds good?

Do you find yourself writing music in a genre/theme that you wouldn't otherwise be a fan of?

How do you handle playing extremely personal/dark songs for friends?

>>69573406
bass into amp works
bass into interface works
bass through DI splitter works on AMP

I know it's gotta be the DI box, but I don't understand what to do.
>>
>>69573431
Definitely a want. The need would be a fretless, and I just scored a Yamaha trb1005F that I'll also pick up next week.
A 5 string upright? Neat. I assume low B since you were talking about an extension? Maybe a silly question, but is down tuning a thing on upright? I know they used to be tuned in all kinds of weird ways. Could you get high tension strings and tune a 4string down to C standard? Or BEAD? But I suppose you'd need the G string and C standard would throw off virtually all your standard playing since you use open strings so much on UB.

It's amazing how people gloss over lyrics or interpret them through their own lens.

I wrote this the other night about suicidal thoughts.

https://clyp.it/rxylwl54

First song I ever recorded. I didn't even polish the lyrics. You can hear in my voice how nervous I am at the start. It's just the first verse, an idea about chorus, and outro.

Played it for a friend and she thought it was a love song. I couple anons here said I had potential and I've never been so hopeful.

Think about some of your favorite hit songs and how dumb the lyrics can be.

Sweet child of mine is complete nonsense, for instance. The "where do we go?" part is there because Axl literally couldn't figure out where to take the song. And no one gives a fuck.
>>
>>69573489
Low string will be C as there are about 2 low Bs in the standard classical repertoire, although it will often be closer to B as the baroque group I play with tunes to 415.

The 5th string will eliminate some real awkwardness and stupid shifts that you get with an extension.

Low tunings are easy enough to do, as there are sets for all different tunings and tensions - Low B/C strings are common and single strings are readily available, although a low tuning wouldn't be practical for most purposes.

At the moment I have my little bass strung up in 5ths CGDA like a cello an octave lower. Takes a bit of learning and thinking, but works surprisingly well and has a very different resonance.
>>
>>69573465
Is your DI active or passive? Bass'es usually require active DI's cause their signal isn't as hot as guitars. Try bypassing the DI and going straight into the interface, see what happens.
>>
>>69573643
Pretty sure it's passive (there's no batter for the DI). Going straight into the interface works fine.

>>69573584
Another one of my favorite examples is John Mayer's anecdote about how label execs made him demo his album on laptop speakers, because that's how they thought most fans would hear it. How a song sounds is sometimes more important than what it actually means.

No idea if this is the right thread for this but my Roland Cube 30x just croaked on me today. It powers on fine with a quick sound from the speaker. Usually, all the lights will go on and then blink off in a second and that's when the amp starts producing sound. But this time, it just stays with all the lights lit up. I have tried turning it off and on multiple times but it's still the same

Any ideas on how to fix this? i opened the amp and the fuse and capacitors look fine
>>
>>69573666
So if you want track bass through a DI and hear it on the amp - you'll want to get an active DI. For now, I suggest recording straight into the interface and running some sort of sim on the signal, so you'd hear how it sounds amped up.

If you wanna do the split - get an active DI box.
>>
>>69573786
I heard the best way to record bass was to mix DI and cab, that's what I'm going for.
>>
>>69573820
Not sure what genre you are looking for, and since I haven't got a bass all I can do is parrot some recording tips I heard from Spectre Media.

If it's metal you're looking for and on the cheap - what the guys usually do is run one unamped DI signal and one amped - either via sim or an amp.

If you're looking for metal check out SMG's "how to record heavy bass", it has some neat tricks. Ryan Bruce does some similar thingies - he records a DI, copies the track, amps one up through a sim and lets a di copy stay for the attack and punch. Voila.

I sadly can't help you if you're looking for something other than metal.

I write the guitar part first then the lyrics, although I've heard most artists write lyrics as doing so would make the melody just come in naturally without needing to think about it too much. (I too sometimes write the lyrics first.)

>How important to you is the honest/integrity of the lyrics vs how well the notes/melody/impression of lyrics?
Honestly, I give no damn about the honest songwriting bullcrap. The melody is what makes the song most of the time and not the lyrics. (well, that's my opinion at least.)

>Do you ever write stuff you don't relate to just because it sounds good?
Sure. I do it most of the time when writing songs. Most of my experience (social or w/e) isn't that interesting thus I always step into someone else's shoes when writing songs.

So I'm changing the strings on my guitar for the first time, and this little thingy is really loose now, it keeps moving up and down from left to right , and the string isn't held in place anymore. Am I screwing it back incorrectly or something? There's a spring involved too. I'm probably missing something very simple.
>>
>>69568249

My 2c: The golden ages of both are over.

Gisbon USA quality control is appalling. Many seem to have been slapped together with terrible fretwork, especially on the low end models like the faded series (barf). Something about paying $$$ for a 5 piece body and shit frets doesn't sit right

And the best Epis were built in Japan, Korea, and Czech republic. I haven't played a chinese one that was anywhere near as good as the older ones yet. They're still good value I just wouldn't buy one.

>>69575873
That's called a saddle. The big screw holds it in place length-wise. That's for adjusting intonation.
There should also be 2 small screws (usually hex screws) at the opposite end. Those lift the saddle up and adjust the height of the string. They should be the same length so the saddle isn't slanted or rocks left for right.
>>
>>69575873

that's a string saddle

They are a bit loose with no string tension on them. The string if it is a floating trem, runs through the back of the guitar in the trem block, then out of the hole and up to the nut. There should be a little groove on the end of the saddle facing the pickups and the string should sit on it. When you tighten the string it will hold the saddle down and the string should sit snug
>>
>>69575873
>gio
believe me that's only the beginning of your issues
anyways, that bridge is garbage but as >>69575906 says, you just need to tune the string back again so that tension will hold it in place.
Just make sure the saddle is in proper position before doing so.
>>
>>69575873
>>69575918
btw if there was nothing wrong with your setup before hand there should be no need to play with the saddles' screws or other parts when restringing.

Flamenco and classical guitar styles are two distinct styles.
Flamenco was the music of the illiterate common man in Spain, while classical music was for the wealthy and educated court musicians.

>>
>>69575971
Is there much of a difference sound wise with med or short-scale?

Looking for just like a standard Fender precision type body too. Something I can move around a bit since I like to play up the neck.
>>
>>69575962

short-scale basses bruh

A lot of SG basses are short scale.

Maybe give the cheapy epiphone one a go. I played a new Gibson Sg bass a few years ago and it was awful for the huge price tag
>>
>>69575974
And yet nobody uses the pinky for anything HMMMM...

It's a weaker finger that produces an undesirable sharp, tinny sound. No matter how much it is filed, the width of the nail doesn't give notes good support.
>>69575867
>gonna need the pinky for jazz
Kek no
>>
>>69576015
not with an electric bass

but you can tell the difference between a bass guitar and an upright bass. the upright is much fuller/mellower
>>
>>69575995

From what I can see the only decent current epis are the semi hollows, like the casino and dot.

As far as epi goes generally the older Korean ones are much better although the electronics are just as crappy
>>
>>69576028
i use pinky for rock playing all the time
>>
>>69575974
>Segovia was a hack.
This
John Williams was a Segovia student and is way better than Segovia ever dreamed of being.
>>
>>69576015
I think the 50s precision bass/Tele bass is medium scale. Check those out. Yes, the shorter the scale length the thicker strings you'll NEED and that's why they mostly sound a bit muddy and thumpier. Also, pickups are closer to the neck relative to the scale length with shorter scales lengths. But it's definitely something you can work with.
>>
>>69573465
Bryan Beller has said he usually titles the song first, then tries to write parts that sound like they fit the title.
>>
>>69576035
... That's because it's an entirely different instrument, not because of the scale length specifically.
>>
>>69576028

restringing seemed a big deal back when i was first starting. It's really a simple deal though and the more you do it the quicker and easier it is.

just a word of advice: make sure you know what string guage to use. If you switch gauges you may need to take it to a store to get set up again.

I made the mistake of going much heavier on my first guitar and it threw the neck relief out and it wouldn't intonate properly was an absolute fuck

John Williams is trash, from his guitar choice to his rigid style(which sometimes works).
The man must be on the spectrum because everything form his play style to general demeanor is completely uninspired. There are many, better guitarists than him like Doug Niedt, Christopher Parkening, Bream etc, but John's only notable accomplishment is playing like a robot.
I spoke with a man named Jim Sherry in Chicago at length(2 hours, not entirely by choice) who knew Segovia, published some of Parkening's books(Sherry Brenner Publishing), etc.
He booked a show for John in Chicago once during the 80's. He said that some of the things that John Williams would say were highly unusual, nevermind the fact that some of them would be offensive to the person who booked him. He said something along the lines of "The only reason I ever do these shows in America is for the money, I would much rather be back home."

John's performances are also no frills, he has a set list of songs he does all the time, there's no time for questions, he comes, he plays, he goes home.
>>
>>69576058
Wow Fender reissues are almost double that of guitars.

I can't imagine the low end tone is much different on a Squier? Got plenty of cash but if it's just for a few months practice, couple of shows etc. should I should go for this? Looks perfect size and shape wise.

you wanna rephrase that m8
>>
>>69576204
Do you have a link in the exact model?
>>

Whoa... So this is the power of this pinky...

Here's David Russell, a better guitarist, playing it without the pinky and not playing like an autistic robot.

Sevilla by Albeniz is the only Williams interpretation I like.
>>
>>69576222

Forgot I should order from this site since I get a discount and free delivery. Can't seem to find size options but this is the very basic model, feel free to have a look around. Not too fussed on the style as long as it's easily to move around as I said. Thanks bud.
>>
>>69576363
Well that's a standard longscale bass.
The 50s P bass or Telecaster bass is something more specific.
And either way, it'll be a P bass which usually means it has a chunky neck. I only mentioned it since you were asking for a short or mediumscale bass and mentioned precision basses.
>>
>>69576408
Yeah and I can't seem to find shortscale on this site. Must be somewhere, most reputable online dealer in the UK.
>>
>>69576308
I don't know if that's true, anon.
I just don't think it's contagious, you're just born with it or you're not.

Got em for Jaguars, which are fine by me

If I could be cheeky enough, what should I be spending on a practice amp that won't create an earthquake in my flat? Looking to spend like £70 at the very max

http://www.gear4music.com/Bass-Amps/Practice-Amps.html
>>
>>69576516
>>69576520
Yeah, the VM jaguar seems like a fine choice if you're really worried about long scale. Can't talk about the overall quality of the instrument but Squiers are usually fine.
>>
>>69576520
practice amps universally sound pretty crappy to be perfectly honest. I'd just get something on the cheaper side and not worry about your tone too much on these things, they basically just make sure you can hear yourself. Anything in the 10-20W range is fine at home.
>>
>>69576520
>£70
*£80

I just have bad memories of my last practice amp rattling everything and giving off feedback constantly.
>>
>>69576579
20w then, and I'll be using headphones mostly anyway.

Thanks for all your help.
>>
>>69576609

>having to go through kids guitars to find your size

iktf

i have to buy xl child white school shirts for suits
>>
>>69576684
Well it's stupid that they're called "kids size" in that shop. It's just a shortscale.
I only play extra long scale 5ers, so I don't know that feel, but it seems silly.
>>
>>69576719

yeah it is a bit, you see those smaller basses played by (fully grown) pros all the time

not even always because they're small themselves, as someone said above it can feel much more comfortable hammering melodies on a smaller bass
>>
>>69576579
yamaha thr10 is a practice amp and it sounds 10/10
>>
>>69576805
>300 bucks
Not what most people would spend on a practice amp.
>>
>>69576828
maybe not, but anon said that practice amps are universally crappy, which i dont think is true.

worth the buy though, i highly recommend it for anyone who likes to play quietly but get that tube effect, plus it doubles as an interface and as a stereo speaker for whatever aux device you use
>>
>>69576860
I literally just need a thing to practice with, would use my laptop if it got to that point. My local has a big fuck off bass amp stack permanently set up and I have a manager to help out for other venues.

Played guitar, drummed and played a bit of bass for years so it's only the parts I need to learn/write.
>>
>>69576906
then do what i did when i first started playing geetar:

get on craigslist and buy the cheapest amp you can find that

>a) works, and;
>b) has the power output you require

think about b) for a while; are you sure you'll be playing foreveralone? i picked up a 35W solid state peavey for $80, granted it was made in the 90s but it's still in perfect working condition today.
>>
>>69576942
>get on craigslist

Bit skeptical of getting ripped off with that but I guess it's an option for a cheaper yet better amp. Just need a big mate to come along with me

I recently bought an epiphone les paul special II and an amplifier("cort" brand) for $400. Was it a good investment or a waste of money? First electric guitar btw
>>
>>69577524
>good investment

Depends if you stick at it
>>
>>69577524
>for $400
Where do you live ?
If it's america/europe you got completely ripped off mate. A new epi lp special II is €150 and I can't imagine paying more than €100 for a cort amp.
>>
>>69577619
Argentina
>>
>>69577665
ah, that explains it.
as >>69577560 said, if you stick to it, it's not a bad investment, I've paid €100 for my guitar and I spent much more than a hundred hours on it in barely three years, so even if it is an utter turd, it pretty much gave me a whole new hobby and opened my mind to a lot more different music genres.
>>
>>69577719
Backing this up, I learned most of what I know on a £40 nylon string.
>>
>>69577719
gonna second this anon - i bought a cheapo 80 dollar bass like 7 years ago. it was shitty but got me into the hobby
>>
>>69577816
>>69577866
I'll mention just one thing though, just because you're feeling comfortable jamming in your bedroom on your epi or whatever cheap guitar you have doesn't mean it'll be as good on stage when gigging, there's nothing wrong with upgrading your instrument.
Also, don't hoard cheap gear. It's tempting to succumb to the feeling of "I need new sounds", but it doesn't mean you should go for it.
>>
>>69577916
I went through music performance college with a new MiM tele and no idea how to EQ it properly, nervous wreck and fucked up endlessly for months despite being a competent bedroom player.

All part of growing as a musician. There is no better feeling than the first time you play with a full band though with big amps and a drummer. Makes all the practice worth it.
>>
>>69578013
Yeah, also because you have good gear doesn't mean you'll sound good. It all works as some sort of balance.

On top of that I'll give another piece of advice : record yourself
even with your cellphone or your webcam, it doesn't matter if the sound is ass but as long as you can hear your mistakes, you'll be able to focus on them much better.
