That comment must be from someone entirely disconnected from internet culture. "I have crippling depression but I'm hilarious so people don't worry about me whenI make suicide/depression jokes." Has been the thing for a good while. I hope to God it's satire/bait otherwise that's just sad.

You can probably also look to /fa/ and their dumb threads about what's effay or not. Plenty of times you'll see depression and shit brought up as fashionable. I'm pretty sure I remember a thread all about the most "fashionable" mental illnesses.

That's not to say depression hasn't been on the rise or whatever for youths, but it definitely has a trendy status at the moment. Whether this new publicity is good for mental health, I dunno. I feel like shitty "lol so quirky and depressed, but I'm cool" memes aren't doing any good.

Among the boards I browse, while /mu/ might contain some high octane autism, /fa/ is by far the most self-conscious and potentially self-destructive. I feel like fitness is catching on more than frailty, but the thinspo threads persist. Plus there've been a number of trips that've popped up in the past few months, and while none are complete shitters, they make some threads feel too echo-y (in a board obsessed with passing judgement, no less).
