Best way to get rid of recording jitters is to just constantly record as part of your practice routine. Don't bother saving the files. Or do, and you can then use them to track your progress over time. The most important part is learning that playing is the same whether it's being recorded or not.

Anyone got experience with partscasters?
Looking at one with an american deluxe neck for like 440 euros; p. sure the neck alone is worth that but I dunno... what if the truss is fucked?
>>
>>69494357
>what if the truss is fucked
Sell it to somebody else. Pass that shit down the line.
>>
Can someone help me with recording issues. I'm recording an electric guitar directly into a macbook pro. There is a shit ton of delay between when i play and when my computer records it. I'm using garageband and a cheap behringer di. do you think it's the behringer or garageband? Or maybe some third variable i'm not understanding.
>>
>>69494357
if the truss is fucked it doesn't matter whether the rest of it is parts or original

are you using 44.1 khz?

>>69494418
Yeah that's what I'm worried about. I'd buy it just for the neck, and keep changing shit until I have a great instrument not just a neck, but if the truss isn't good then it's all fucked.
Still kind of tempted to gamble with it, never had problems with any sh guitars I bought...

Recording sampling rate. If you haven't fucked with it, it's probably not jacked up. Recording at 96 or 128 could be a cause of delayed playback.

I'm skeptical that a USB interface, not matter how shitty, would lag recording a single input at 44.1. I can record 12 tracks in Ableton with no problem on a MBP. I've never recorded in garage band, but I would kinda be surprised if that was it.

Are you pushing output through the same interface?
>>
>>69494498
only other thing I could think of would be to check your interface config for a direct monitor setting
>>
>>69494589
hss is good if youre a beginner and can only afford one guitar

otherwise its best you buy one sss gutiar and one hh guitar
>>
>>69494592

getting the hss?

i'd suggest getting a fairly hot aftermarket bucker so you can use it almost like an onboard booster, and then maybe putting some vintage style low-gain single coils in the neck and middle so you get a really wide variety of toans

Anyone here tried micing a 15-watt tube combo amp for their gigs? How was it?

We've got a couple of gigs lined up before Christmas and I'm tired of lugging around my DRRi plus two guitars and pedal board to venues. I'm thinking of just selling that thing and getting a smaller amp instead. I'm choosing between a TSA15, Blues Jr. or a Pro Junior. I play clean/light overdrive on most of our songs.

Is 15watts enough for mid sized venues?
>>

Yeah. I'm liking it quite a bit. My first "real" strat. I used to play back in middle and high school. I had a lefty Aria strat clone and then eventually got an Epiphone LP Standard. Decided to get back into it after five years of not touching a guitar and decided not to fall for the lefty meme this time. Was fairly happy that I was able to immediately start remembering things and even though I was switching from left to right I had gotten quite a few chords and simple riffs down within an hour.

64 Special. Someone who owned it before me crudely repaired the traditional heel crack and then got crazy with the cheese whi- I mean paint brush. Looks real bad, will eventually get the body cosmetically touched up and refinished to match the original finish still on the neck. For now being that I'm poor I'll play my ugly guitar lol. All those issues led to my getting a great-playing old SG for less than a grand, so I can't complain

ok /gg/, what is the practical difference between a strat and a tele?

afaik they can sound exactly the same and for the most part the 'toan' depends more on the amp and effects used than the actual guitar. lets say youre comparing equally valued guitars, so both fender mims, or both murrican standards, whatever

Um no? Especially not on guitars with completely different pickups.
>>
>>69496146
I wouldn't say they sound the same at all. My friend has a Squire Strat and an Eric Johnson signature and neither sound like my tele. Both strats have a very glassy sound to me, where my tele has a lot more twang and growl. I have BKP's in it, but nontheless it still retains that telecaster sound.

Anyone use a OR15 for gigs/practice?

I played one for a bit at the guitar center and I dug it quite a bit, but I'm worried about volume. Our drummer isn't particularity loud so I'm not too worried about being heard over him, but I mostly play clean so I'm not too sure how loud it can go while being mostly clean.

It's that or save up for a Mesa Mark V or a used III. Playing through a JC-120 right now and it's starting to kill me.

Alright /gg/, let's try something.
>what do you feel are your best traits?
>what do you feel are your worst?
Short and sweet if possible.

I have a good enough ear to hear what I should play next, I can play pretty fast.

My timing isn't as on point as it should be, it's not horrible, but it's obvious during slow stuff. my playing gets to repetitive, I need to build my chops and bag of tricks. I'm using a metronome a lot more and focusing on licks for 2 weeks then chord shapes I do think know for 2, going back and forth.

What pickups do you prefer? What genre do you play?

Get a fixed bridge for your first electric -Telecaster, LP style bodies or any fixed bridge Ibbys/superstrats, hollow bodies etc

piss easy to set up and none of the hassles of floating bridges
>>
>>69498130
I haven't owned an electric guitar before, therefore I have no preferences. I doubt my preferences in bass electronics and pickups will be relevant here.

You are legitimately retarded, aren't you?
>>

To be fair, a lot of guys just sound awful playing amplified nylon strings with non-classical technique - ALL the string slap or using a pick so it's more percussion than note

>>
>>69498966
Transformers vring it down to the proper voltage inside the amp. But honestly, name one good guitarist that doesnt use 110 master race
>>
>>69498076
Started with a cheap strat, switched to les paul because muh humbucker and muh distortion, recently went back to strats. Don't think I'll ever return to primarily playing les pauls. Strats are near perfect for my style of playing, except for the fact that it has 1 volume and 2 tones, which I find to be a big disadvantage over les pauls.
>>
>>69499008
>ALL the string slap or using a pick so it's more percussion than note
it's not necessarily a bad thing
if you want to play classical music, then you need classical technique, but otherwise it's just expressing yourself.
>>
>>69492763
I've realized that only asian made instruments are in my price range for a fretless bass.... And I'm even more limited because it has to be a 5-string with 35'' scale length.

Can someone comment on my choices so far or maybe point me in the right direction?
Sire M7 should work but I'm not sure about them in general.
Spector "Spectorcore" 5, Spectors are usually great but these are made in Asia as well.
Some Lakland Skyline I guess? Hard to find honestly and I'm not sure if the Korean ones are worth "tracking down".

My last option would be to stalk the local classifieds until something pops up.
>>
>>69499198
you could defret a fretted bass/pay a luthier to do so, it might even cost you less
>>
>>69499211
That is an option but from my experience they're never quite perfect. And I doubt it'd be cheaper than buying a fretless one, Defretting, filling in the gaps and then sanding it down, that's ~2 hours of work? That'd be 120 bucks minimum.
>>
>>69499245
>Defretting, filling in the gaps and then sanding it down, that's ~2 hours of work?
Took a little bit less when we did it with my friend on his cheapo chinese bass and we have absolutely no experience in that field.
The neck itself feels pretty good now but since my friend is a coward and dumb, he won't spend thirty minutes setting up the damn thing and sanding the nut's bottom side so that it has a lower action.
The only other fretless I've tried was a cort A5 set with roundwounds and it didn't feel as good imo.
>>
>>69495774
Doom metal is comprised of 14 year olds.
>>
>>69499297
Hmm, again, going through what is available to me, it seems like I'm seriously limited by that 35'' scale. But at the same time that's what I've been playing for years now and re-adjusting (especially on a fretless) seems stupid.
Maybe if I find a decent bass used that fits the criteria I'll think about ripping out the frets, but buying new just to mod it doesn't sit right with me.

Not a fan. If you're looking for the traditional LP sound, get full size humbuckers. Minis are a bit more treble-heavy, just not a fan personally. My advice would be to save. as long as you've got a guitar, keep practicing on it and save your jewgolds. Vintage silverburst Customs from 78-83 or whenever they were made are awesome. It'll take lots of time to save for, but then you'll have a guitar that's a bit nicer than a bottom-of-the-barrel Gibson. If you do feel the need to go the cheap route, I'd just get a silverburst Epiphone and do fretwork/replace some electronics

I have a TH30. It sounds nothing like a OR (even the 15), and doesn't come close to a Mesa (it's gain gets fizzier than modern Mesas).
I ended up leaving the shape knob alone and using an Empress ParaEq in the loop. Works really well this way, but I think it might be cumbersome for other people.

We as guitarists seem to get exploited a lot because we are so gullible, people buy new pickups before they even try to adjust their existing ones, they buy vintage capacitors and other bullshit

This might be more of a /prod/ question, but would I be able to get a synth and use a bass or guitar amp with it? Would I even need an amp if I'm using headphones? The synth I'm looking at is a microkorg if that matters.
>>
>>69505157

u rock famerino
>>
>>69505157
Okay you need to practice without distortion more. Technique is pretty sloppy. You want to be at a point where you can play those parts well with a clean tone; no distortion, no reverb, no effects, no mid scooping. Once you can do that and nail it, then go have fun with the distortion. Don't try to use a bunch of saturated gain to cover mistakes.
>>
>>69505266
Not really

I thought that was a Les Paul? I did it for an amp once, I fucked Up the tubes in store by flicking the ON/OFF switch like a bean and fucked up the tubes, asked a rep "I wanna try out this Deville but the tubes are fried" they replaced them with fresh JJs, I bought it and at home I swapped my old tubes and returned it 3 weeks later. There was nothing wrong with mine except they were almost 2 years old
>>
>>69505411

You're not missing anything because you don't understand a word. It's generic, pandering marketing blabbering, nothing of substance. If you want to know more about a guitar than it's specs and how it sounds, playing it yourself is the only rational way to find out.

session is okay, they at least don't tinker with the sounds and since they use the same amp in all their reviews it's easy to compare different guitars soundwise.

yeah you really don't need to be able to understand what's being said to get the gist of a youtube review for this kind of stuff.

Is there anything that plays as quickly as a Parker? I have a couple Ibanez and PRS's, but I played a Nitefly that blew my mind and I can't find anything that feels comparable.

best acoustic for under $250?
I've been playing bass for about a year and a half and I want to learn guitar
I was considering this ovation https://www.amazon.com/Ovation-AB24-5-Acoustic-Electric-Balladeer-Dreadnought/dp/B00ISQCG4Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1481061964&sr=8-2

How come my improvisations sound like dog shit?

I feel like I'm permanently stuck in that in-between phase where I'm still thinking heavily about what chords are passing by and not just letting shit flow from my fingers.

I'd go grab something used, you'll probably get a better deal.

That being said, I do like Ovations as an electric player but they don't typically have the best sound, and I think that would be an even more dramatic factor on the more budget ones.

>>
>>69505974
Do some/all of these:
a) Reduce the tempo by half and instead of trying to run over the arpeggios of each chord think more on the overarching ideas and melody you want to play
b) Try to sing/think each phrase before playing it
c) learn licks from your favourite players
d) transpose a solo of the piece you're playing and study the structure/phrasing and licks
e) listen to a solo of the piece until you can play it note per note in your head, don't extract licks from it, just interiorize the sound in your head
f) Record your solos and listen to them.

you're one of the morons that go on zappa and videos and say he's sloppy. maybe he should work on his licks too. You don't realize there is such a thing as polyrhythmic phrasing. it's not sloppy, it's a feel. maybe eric dolphy and coltrane should work on their licks too, and play neverending 32nds up and down the scale. fucking moron. Sorry, b ut i hate what people like you have done to music culture
>>
>>69505974
The 2 key things are phrasing and tension and release.

One thing that helps me is locating the roots for the progression, locating its harmonies, and then deciding if i actually want to hit the harmonies. That will help you with the latter, former just takes latching onto ideas and altering them.

not the butthurt anon.
There are some classical pieces with different time signatures (ferneyhough), and also you might say that simple counterpoint has different rhythms.
>>
>>69505974
Why does it matter? Unless you're playing stuff like jazz that requires some improvisation during performances I don't see what it's so important. So long as you know your stuff well enough to write parts on your own with unlimited time frame I don't understand the emphasis on this particular aspect of playing.

I've been doing music for twenty years playing various instruments and have never been great at on the fly improv, As long as I can do a quick recording of whatever the band has together, take that home for the evening and write up some ideas to bring in the following session, it works out fine.

I don't fucking know anon but seeing how he asked for it it clearly matters to him.
>>
>>69506159
not him, but improvisational ability helps a lot with the creative process. and in the context of a band with multiple songwriters, it allows for complex arrangements to be done on the fly.

> best
Quick/weird chord changes, rhythm, fingerpicking, pedal fuckery, listening to others

Very subpar lead playing, not very versatile (I sound good with my bands but I couldn't play funk to save my life), a bit sloppier than I like to make myself believe.

>I want complete freedom. And I like to play cover songs but improvise my own solos in the solo sections. And also I am getting into playing Jazz more.

Gotcha. And thanks for the answer. I was curious what the thought process was; not just in your case but for all players who put a lot dedication in to getting their improvisation ability top notch.

Hey guys, does anyone of you know how to play these tabbed harmonics? If been looking and trying arround but it doesnt seem to work for me my harmonics are to low in sound, thanks!
https://youtu.be/pYJ2i9vzvQ4?t=4m30s
>>
>>69506544

Interesting. You don't see people playing artificial harmonics while tapping like that often. My guess on the technique there is that he is very lightly grazing the string with his right hand to sound the artificial harmonics while simultaneously hammering on the note with his left. Something like that.

But anyway, directly to your question, yes those are artificial harmonics he's doing, not natural harmonics.
>>
>>69506544
Tapped harmonics? I hammer my middle finger toward the fret its self, like im bitch slapping it. Not as wide a range of motion though like i was actually slappibg a bitch

here's a quick example
take a chord, fancy, not fancy, it doesn't matter, this's a D minor 6
then we take a first rhythm, a simple 4/4 low pulse.
let's do a more melodic, and also rythmically more complex measure, using that Dm6 we defined at the beginning
now we layer both of them on top of each other. fortunately, they're both in 4/4, so we don't have to drag on forever for them to come back into sync.
and there we have it, two rythms you can play on one guitar at the same time, kinda like a high pitched bass player and a guitarist would do.

>>69506544
as other said, it's tapped harmonics. the trick is that just like the natural harmonics of a string, you'll have two harmonics at 5/7 frets higher, one at the middle and then it'll repeat itself higher up.
Tom geldschlager took this concept and went even further down the spiral of madness by doing barres and playing several artificial harmonics in a row.
