Is having "good taste" just a meme? Why are we supposed to believe a couple of snobs who agree that some low budget independent album is a masterpiece when their opinion is in the minority?

Wouldn't it make more sense for us to agree that the most popular music is technically the best because the most people like it?

If it's that great how come none of it ever stays at the top of the charts for long? Surely a good song or album would be at the top for some considerable time, say years.
>>
Because music can objectively be good or bad.
Just because YOU like it doesn't make it good or bad, but the way someone makes music reflects talent, effort and creativity, if it sounds like shit and you like it, it still is shit.

In argumentation theory, an argumentum ad populum (Latin for "appeal to the people") is a fallacious argument that concludes that a proposition is true because many or most people believe it: "If many believe so, it is so."

This type of argument is known by several names,[1] including appeal to the masses, appeal to belief, appeal to the majority, appeal to democracy, appeal to popularity, argument by consensus, consensus fallacy, authority of the many, bandwagon fallacy, vox populi,[2] and in Latin as argumentum ad numerum ("appeal to the number"), and consensus gentium ("agreement of the clans"). It is also the basis of a number of social phenomena, including communal reinforcement and the bandwagon effect. The Chinese proverb "three men make a tiger" concerns the same idea.

music is a meme

The vast majority of people do not consume music seriously, and more or less use it like a fashion accessory. Therefore what is mainstream and popular to like will become widespread, and that includes simple top 40 top.

Also, popularity has never been an indicator of artistic merit in any art form.

What a disgusting tongue.

What makes it objectively good if it isn't popular? Just because they tell you it's better doesn't mean it's true. Whatever is good should be whatever wins he majority vote.

Ever thought of forming your own opinion?

>Whatever is good should be whatever wins he majority vote.
This is an appeal to popularity fallacy.

Having said that, here's what I think you should consider when forming an opinion about music - is music made for the sole purpose of being sold aka is it just a product, technical capabilities of musicians, lyrics, cultural impact, innovation and pioneering a new genre of music, new uses for different instruments.

Who wants to do that anymore? Listen to what /mu/ tells you.
>>
>>69484301
That's not what ur mum thought.
>>
>>69484958
Yeah, this is the point. These pretentious reviewers are appealing to a crowd who just listen to their word as bond. Just look at how sharply Fantano can change the opinion of an album within this niche group of people. It seems like there's nothing more to this than making yourself feel better than the average person because you have some sort of fake higher taste, while in reality you're still using other people's opinion to validate your own.
>>
For the most part, the more popular music is the better it should be. The only exception is music that doesn't immediately grab peoples attention but given time can sound decent.
>>

but music gets stale...

Good music doesn't get "stale".

I think the idea is more that the more music you consume and the broader you make your horizons, that top 40 pop isn't as appealing anymore. This isn't saying that top 40 pop is shit as music, just that if you're the type of person that likes to expand on their hobbies and taste, when you experience a big and deep range of music, you generally start to like it less and less because you see that it's fairly one dimensional. Above all, just listen to music that you enjoy, and always search for more.

Good music is always enjoyable.
