There was a whole group of artists who were pissed. I think they were called "United Artists Against Apartheid" or something. I know Paul Weller and Billy Bragg were a part of it.

I never really understood why people were pissed about it. He was just going there to play with musicians from the country, it was nothing political and certainly nothing that was pro apartheid.

Unless there's some element I'm unaware of it just seems like people were getting pissed off over nothing.

How about the fact that they were all supposed to be boycotting South Africa to oppose apartheid? Not only did Simon go against the boycott by going there but he tried to act like he was actually helping out due to the album's success.
