Welcome to the first edition of Nothing but Black Metal December.

In these threads, we listen to and discuss the objectively best genre of music, namely black metal.

This edition is kindly sponsored by Hat from Gorgoroth fame.

Hope you hate your stay.

Good first choice for an album.

I would agree if it weren't for the fact that there aren't a great deal of bands that can be considered great in the genre, much less a continuous flow of them that desereve an entire month of threads dedicated to talking about them.

I'm not sure why we need these threads to have decent discussion about the genre. That was the only reason I even visited nbbmn. There was some people recommending a black metal general. Regardless of whether or not it lasts, it makes more sense than "nothing but black metal (insert month name)."

This is my point. Call the threads /blackmetal/. Not all generals go every day all the time but at least it gives people a thread for actual discussion outside of the /metal/, which has become an absolute meme.

Does anyone else like Jilemnický Okultista from Master's Hammer? I've been listening to it for a few years now, but man, it still strikes me as some of the most avant-garde/experimental black metal there is. Not to mention, the fucking riffs! What are some more bands that are somewhat akin to this sound? I'm already familiar with Malokarpatan. Check them out if you haven't: https://malokarpatan.bandcamp.com/releases

So how long have you been listening to black metal for now? About a month?
>>
>>69454890
I listened to it this November and the November before.
>>
>>69447160
Lugubrum has two stages:

1- Drunken farmer blak mettle that's filthy, grim and dark, but catchy and imaginative and has a strong pig-fucker-countryside-inbred vibe to it.

1- Drunken experimentalist who's too wasted to make regular black metal so he goes on a fantastic tangent that encompasses jazz and world music

Both are fantastic, but I think >>69447505 's recommendaiton (De Vette Cuecken) is an excelent midpoint between sides 1 and 2 of the band.
>>
>>69451741
Mayhem ARE overrated.

They're still godly, though.
>>
>>69454906
So two months total? Sounds about right for that opinion.
>>
>>69454671
I agree to an extent. I've never been able to really get into them. Hellhammer, Faust, and even Necro are all pretty detestable people. Just watch any Mayhem doc on Youtube or of course UTLTU where hellhammer literally boasts about how proud he is of Faust for "killing some fucking faggot". Seriously you scumbag?

Attila, Euro, and Dead are the champions of that band.
>>
>>69446511

Melodeath fan here who's getting into melodic black metal. Discovered some pretty good music along the way--particularly Dissection and Naglfar--but I'm looking for something more.

I fell in love with pretty much the most well-known melodic BM song there is, Dissection's The Somberlain. Can anyone recommend me more along those lines--slowish, melodic BM, maybe with even more intricate melodies?

Video related because, holy fuck. Exactly what I'm looking for:

https://youtu.be/5ZGpK1wXJjc?t=3m
>>
>>69456752
Nothing else exactly like it really exists, I think the closest you are going to get is Vinterland.
>>
>>69456842
That's a shame. I'll check them out.

Youtube is full of one-man atmospheric BM projects, but I haven't found any I can really get into for some reason.

I've found plenty of fast and energetic melodic black metal--Naglfar after their first two albums might as well be Mors Principium Est's angry church-burning cousin (video related)--but really nothing that matches the slow intricate sound of that one particular song. Even most other Dissection isn't really that good.

>>69447751
Windir is one of the greatest bands of all time.
>>
>>69456985
I have. Again, one or two good songs but other than that nothing really sticks out.

Them and Dissection have the same problem actually--the drums kind of overpower everything else and make it difficult to pick out the melody. I love some things about black metal but I hate the way they tolerate and even like horrible production. I like my metal to sound crisp and precise, think modern Dark Tranquillity. I suppose that goes against everything in black metal culture, though
>>
>>69456966
Most one-man atmoblack bands are really generic and derivative. I wouldn't bother with them besides the really well-known ones.

>Even most other Dissection isn't really that good.
If you keep listening to The Somberlain in it's whole, I think it'll start to grow on you. It took me a while to warm up to The Somberlain beyond the first two tracks.

>horrible production

>I like my metal to sound crisp and precise
There's your problem.
>>
>>69457152
Compared to the rawness of a lot of bm albums and demos, The Somberlain is extremely clean and accessible. Raw or lo-fi production does not mean badly produced either; there a quite a few very raw albums that are exceptionally produced.

Don't expect an overproduced, modern sound like DT if you want to listen to any bm that's actually good.

Being able to actually discern the various instruments rather than an angry sounding staticy roar is overproduced?

Naglfar pretty much did it, and it worked well in my opinion.

>>69457221
yeah, that's what I noticed. And I'm still giving it a chance.

This is a two-man atmospheric BM project I stumbled on while looking through said generic ones that's actually pretty decent:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMGo-9tKb90
>>
>>69458062
Listen, if you really want to get into Black Metal, you're going to have to give up that idea of clean and precise sound. That's literally the opposite of what Black Metal was founded on, and what any band worth a damn sticks by.

>Being able to actually discern the various instruments rather than an angry sounding staticy roar is overproduced?
Tell me, in this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c-222tBBEE
Are you able to tell the instruments apart from one another? Are you able to tell when they switch notes?

The answer to both of those should be yes.
While it is a lo-fi album, everything is still pretty clear if you're not listening with $5 earbuds.
>>
>>69458062
>Being able to actually discern the various instruments rather than an angry sounding staticy roar is overproduced?
Discerning each instrument does not require ultra-polished, shiny production like DT. The production of The Somberlain is clean enough to hear each instrument clearly (besides the bass, but this is black metal) while still having a bit of an edge to it.

Go the fuck back to death metal you retard. Black metal is about stripped down, minimal production and any band that doesn't do that is obviously not very interested in sounding like a black metal band. There's plenty of great melodeath out there but you clearly don't get the point of black metal. It's not about the technical proficiency of each instrumentalist, but the overall murky atmosphere. All this talk about being "derivative" just fuck off dude. Being progressive or forward thinking is not the fucking point

>if you're not listening with $5 earbuds
I'm using Audio-Technica ATH-D40FS. They're pretty decent.

>are you able to tell the instruments apart?
Yes, but this sounds like I am listening to $5 earbuds, which have gone through the washing machine a couple of times. It's not that I can't tell them if I try, it's that the constant static buzz is a little annoying and doesn't add to the music at all.

>>69461668
>>69461705
You might not be wrong that I'm just looking for black-influenced--blackened?--melodeath. My only argument is--what about Naglfar? They have the good production but keep the black metal sound.

https://youtu.be/gI-_2XH9rOE?t=49s

Melodeath just sounds too bouncy and happy. Melodeath with more minor keys and grim-sounding riffs would be perfect, but I can't find much of that either.

Dammit I just want more Somberlain...

Honestly I do enjoy Dark Tranquility's and Insomnium's early work, but so much of their newer work is so cheesy and plastic sounding they might as well not be the same band.

the dude tells a different story every time someone asks him why he killed euro, the overall gist of it seems to be that euro wanted to kill him first, yeah right euronymous the guy that never burned any churches or committed any crime before wanted to legit kill someone. lucky for Varg only one of them is still around to tell the story.

and according to varg 20+ stab wounds is """self defense"""

What you heard is not some foundational principle of metal, it's just a way to enjoy. If you can hear the lyrics, then fine. It's true for a lot of music, you don't always need to pay attention to the lyrics to enjoy the vocals.
