Holy shit this album is the biggest music disappointment for me so far; more so than "speeding bullet to heaven" by Kid Cudi. Camp and Because of the internet were solid albums but this is a totally different genre.

Everything else? not too bad. I'm on third listen right now. Really growing on me. It's the small things in the production that really really make it shine.

That being said, 8/10 at best. It's no doubt his best work, but it's not amazing. His vocal work is a lot more interesting on this than anything else.

Listened to this once through, I would give it a 4/10 right now.
I would say only Me and Your Mama, Redborne and Baby Boy and Stand Tall are all decent songs but I got a very strong vibe of having "heard it all before". I appreciate the ventures into other genres and making songs in that vain but this dude does nothing to spin it in any interesting way. It's a carbon cut.
Everything else is either on the cusp of being decent if the ideas were a bit stronger in its songwriting and musicality, or just pure garbage that were never good ideas and should have never made it to the album.

I went into this album really enjoying the singles and walking into the album with an overall open mind with no expectations because I've never been a Childish Gambino fan and I wasn't at all disappointed. Boogieman is a perfect example of this. Transitions stiffly from the opening riff to the verses that don't mesh well with the drum pattern and then moves into a whole bunch of other shit that don't work with the pattern either.

Then look at Redbone and the melody and the back rhythm just work so well together because they are mostly in time with each other

So I've been listening to Gambino since like 2008-ish. I have no idea why he decided to make some bargain-value funk album and completely abandon rap, which was what made him into who he is after all this time. So yeah, I'm disappointed.

Someone else in this thread said a lot of the drums sound flat and I agree. A lot of the instruments sound too stocky and stiff and I don't think they're dusty/gritty enough for the sound he's going for. And a lot of times I think he has too much reverb on his vocals. And the mix suffers at multiple points because he tries to do too much, both instrument and vocal-wise. And sometimes his vocals sound like fuckin icejjfish with the weird enunciation and chorus effects.

I feel like he should've tried to capitalize off of "Urn" off of his last album. That song was fuckin good but it was so damn short. If he went after that aesthetic he could've managed, but I think he stepped out of his lane here and it's painfully evident on california. I just thought what the fuck is he doing.

A lot of times I just feel terribly cringey from his lyrics (a whole other level from some of his rap lyrics). I think he isolated himself for too long and smoked too much of da herb lmao.

Coming from someone who actually loves this album. I can also say that the line between influence and biting is thin, and there are instances where he very blatantly bites the sounds of 70s funk-rock.
I guess another thing that can be said is that he tries to hard to replicate those sounds, that one might as well listen to the bands and albums he is paying homage to as they do a much better job with the sound (No shit).
I guess another thing you can say against it is that it's very hard to understand him on some tracks because his vocals get so easily lost in the mix and instruments. Then there's the singing on California...(Which admittedly became one of my favorite tracks after a few listens and I can understand and sing along to the track quite easily.)
I can understand people not liking it, but I definitely feel they are overreacting with how bad they're saying it is. I guess the biggest reason why I love this album so much however, is because it's sounds so nostalgic for me. I've grown up with the bands and albums he is...basically ripping off I'll say it. But I'm not really even mad, because that's some real good shit.

For me it's the vocals. The whole album is produced wonderfully IMO, and most of the vocals are fine in the other songs, but California sounds like he recorded it while pushing out a shit he'd been holding in for days and then autotuned it.

I don't care about wearing your influences on your sleeve. I loved the singles, they were by far the best, but just about everything else was bad to mediocre.

The lyrics were embarassing, the auto-tune effect was out of place and jarring, many tracks didn't have a solid enough foundation so they sounded really shallow and unfinished. Half-baked would best describe the album. Maybe a third-baked. 4.5/10.

This album is actually really good. Took me for a total surprise, since only listening to the single about a month ago. It's very funkadelic imo, fairly similar to the ode's, but even with it being somewhat similar, he's not trying to trample over the old relic of funkadelic's signiture sound. He wants to sample it and showcase it to the masses. He understands this type of music isn't much known or referenced.

Donald said he wasn't a rapper. He said he never wanted to be a rapper. Because once you're a rapper, your scope is limited. You can only do certain things, attempt to stay ahead of the "current" curve, only be a tool for advertising, rather than given actual power of influence over how things will be ran (like Directing Atlanta). Look how all these new age rappers coming in. Rap is just about the only genre that artists have a hard time staying relevant for large periods of time.
