There's something really attractive in extreme misery. I lived in LA also for a couple of years and I would go to skid row, which is more extreme than east hastings, just to look at the fucked up people there. I would never live in skid row though, seems much more dangerous and you could go insane just with the vibe of it.

Visceral experiences? The first time I heard Ultralight Beam, Things Behind the Sun over and over after I had to dump a terminally depressed girlfriend and Cohen's Stranger Song about that same girl. I still cry sometimes.
