as far as their guitar sound is concerned, Peter Buck admits that he was very influenced by the Byrds
Camper Van Beethoven, The Violent Femmes, early U2 (Boy, War). Young Marble Giants have an 80s indie/alternative sound but not necessarily similar to REM. The Feelies or Dream Syndicate's Days of Wine and Roses, too. I feel like The Replacements were kind of like if REM were from the midWest and stuck more to straight-up rocking, although the Replacements had some good balady stuff too.
Superchunk is like indie or Belly is alternative pop that both were prob influenced by REM. The Dambuilders probably fits inbetween those two.
Courtney Barnett possibly.
there's a tribute album of mostly punk/post punk groups from '91 called Surprise Your Pig that's in the /mu/ archive.

Thank you based anons
You'll definitely like Luna

Also you might check out Sturgill Simpson, it's country but definitely heavily influenced by 90s alt. Marquee Moon by Television too if you haven't already heard it
Also you might want to check out Odessey and Oracle by the Zombies. Of course it's an old album, but the melodies on it and songs like "Hung Up On A Dream" seem very REM like to me.
