Gonna post this one more time since I got it in the last part of the last thread, but that'll be it and I'll stop being annoying about it.

Disregard whether you want or need or would use these, if there was a gun to your head and you HAD to put them in the best order (to you), what order would you put this list in.

Use [brackets] for your effects loop if you so choose.

wah
volume
tuner

overdrive/boost
distortion/fuzz

octave
tremolo

flanger

Hey guys, a question here. What are hollowbody guitars used for? This being, why are they better or worse than st models or t models?
>>
>>69316005

I've never transcribed jazz solos, I'm curious. How do you even start with it? You just try to get every note by ear?
>>
Is anybody here into jazz guitar? I'm trying to get into it more and more but I'm borderline retarded. Can you look somewhat competent with just using the chord scale method and fake books?

I hear people say that the proper jazz dudes will look down on people that only knows the chord scale method but that sounds like a load of shit, not like it hurts to know more ways to play.

>>

Sorry I don't want to embarass myself in front of an audiance, I know I'm bad at playing jazz.
But as far as tone goes, I've got as much versatility fiddling with knobs as billy and his three whole half stacks. And we've got as much audiance.

>>69315606
going to practice a little bit then try to write some technical death metal if I have the time for it.

>>69315621
>transcribing coltrane solos
I've tried once and I don't think I'll ever try again. It's pure madness.

>>69316134
Aside from tuner and noise gate, which should be at the beginning, there's no order even for me.
Plus if I had that many pedals, I'd probably use some ABY boxes to split some stuff and get additional effects.

>>69316252
it depends on which hollowbody it is itself. Blues can work regardless of it, but I can't imagine funk on a hollowbody, the tone's not bright enough.
>>

Wah
Noise Gate Send

Noise Gate Return

I don't know too much about EQ pedals and Octavers though. Also the Noise Gate can go several different places depending on how complex it is. I used to get a pretty clean gate without too much tone suck by putting my Decimator II G String in the amp's effects loop.

>>69316134
Tuner, some volume pedals have a tuner out

Volume, if you want to use it like a volume knob to change input volume before going into a gain stage, or want to use crescendos before an effect.
wah

compressor, put it after other effects if you're using it to keep craziness in check, I only use mine clean

overdrive
boost
Fuzz
Distortion
octave

Eq goes before those to shape sound going in, and after to make up/cut frequencies those alter in an unpleasant way, generally

flanger/phaser/chorus doesn't matter if you only use 1 at a time

Never used a noise gate, I don't like using an effects loop

Trem
Reverb
Delay

Volume, to kill all sound if neccesary. Some effects, especially modulation will still make sound if turned on, I put my volume here for that reason.

Looper, after volume if you use swells, before if you want to be able to cut it immediately.

There's no set rules, do what sounds good to you. Maybe you'd like the sound of delay going through reverb, then my set up wouldn't work.

How do you people bother with amps and pedals and cabs and shit? I've been playing digital since I started playing 8 years ago and I can't imagine using anything else, why would you want to have one amp that can do one sound instead of hundreds of amps that can get you 99% of the way there along with being able to use both headphones and speakers.

Yes, the sound is inferior when you're using cheap digital gear but I honestly don't care about that when the convenience and versatility is so much better, I can worry about my tone when I actually learn how to play.

I just had a flashback to sometime last year when some kid came here claiming to be a great guitarists and talking about how he's going to play guitar as a career and us telling him it's possible but not without hard work. He ended up having a major sperg fit cause we weren't listening to him telling us how great he is(. All we were saying is that his best bet is to get in as a session player, playing for someone else who has a name and needs someone to play guitar live, and until that happened he'd probably make less than minimum wage, at least for a year or so. He wasn't having any of that, we weren't as good as him so we didn't understand.
>>
>>69316908

>>
>>69317178
Is it easy to record with it? There's an used one being sold in my area but I'm not sure it's worth the cost, it's around 200$(banana money). I play a shitty GIO through a Boss Power Stack and a Micro Terror, so I need some EQ.
>>
how do i find people to jam with or start a band with? i have been using cl but that has gone nowhere fast and i am starting to go nuts as a result :(
>>
>>69317290
Yeah it's really easy, all I had to do was install ASIO4ALL, plug the thing in through USB and hit the record button on Audacity.
No idea where you live but $200 is about the same as a new one.
>>
>>69317340
Here a new one is about 300$. How are the rock/classic metal tones? Are the amp simulations any good? When recording, you can hear yourself through the amp too, right?

Try playing only one guitar for a few weeks. I've found this can help as you get used to a particular guitar and what you can do with it. It also helps you figure out how to make it as diverse as possible, leading to new discoveries.
>>69315659
A Sterling for $250? If it's not a SUB that's an amazing deal.

BUT WHENEVER YOU BUY USED, EITHER KNOW HOW TO LOOK AN INSTRUMENT OVER OR MEET WHERE A PROFESSIONAL IS.

There's a few. The boss HM-2 for example will give you a good, or even great tone depending on your amp.

HM-2, not MT-2
>>
>>69317575
I emailed the owner dave and he hasn't responded yet. They have a 2 day cancellation policy and no return policy. If they already built it I am pretty much fucked.
>>

>>
>>69317621
>no return policy
That's a red flag.

However, your problem is relatively easy to fix. I think they should be able to help you out.
>>
>>69317623
ah right, I read wrong.
But with the same budget though, you can get a cheap interface, that coupled with a micro terror alone could give a nice tone high gain tone, and cost less.
No idea how far the regular micro terror distorts compared to the dark though.
>>
>>69317657
I mean they are a trusted company. They claim that it is because people used to order their custom cabs and speakers to test drive and would then refund them. I think the closed backs are machined differently thought so it isn't just a case of glueing the back on. Oh well I guess I'll just try to fix it myself if I have too.
>>
>>69317719
That's probably why they stopped selling so much on eBay. Makes sense. I'd hate to be a company offering premium options for a discounted price only to have people take advantage of it over and over.

Good luck man.
>>
Okay question. How do people record guitar digitally these days.

Last time i made music for myself digitally, i used an ancient m-audio 24/96 input card that is barely supported in windows anymore, some old alesis mixer, a mess of wires and workarounds, and whatever fucking pedal plugins for ableton that i could find. It sort of worked. Eventually.

What do people do these days? I presume there is a neater solution.

note: i dont want to buy a lot of physical pedals. Sorry purists. This is far too much of an interim hobbyist thing for me that only happens when im in the mood like once a month or so, its not worth the expense

I know it's subjective and needs-based. I'm just curious as to an overall, middle of the road catch-all set up. All the guides and videos had different-ish feelings on it and they often conflict. Wanted to see how much that carried over here.

spend a bit more on a better strap. Theyre like shoes-youll never regret splurging on one.

also, get thicker picks than the dunlop greens. Something with a pointed tip like Jazz 3s will be better for single note picking technique when youre starting out.

Id personally splurge a bit more on a guitar too. youre in the price range where spending an extra 50$ will give you substantial returns on quality.

2 options

1. guitar -> amp and cab -> microphone -> USB audio interface -> digital audio workstation

2. guitar -> USB audio interface -> digital audio workstation -> virtual amp software

You can run plugin effects on both so you don't need to worry about pedals in either case. First option generally sounds better (provided you have a good amp and cab), but it's harder to learn properly

Personally not a fan of the low-end tribute series. Don't like the dull satin finish, also don't like how they keep changing shit just to be more modern like making them unnecessarily light weight and taking out the switch washer. Also no coil tapping.

But hey, it's still a Gibson LP and if you want that classic tone then that's probably the cheapest way to get it without buying an Epi. IMO though, you shoulda saved up longer and bought a Standard or Classic model.

>>

How about a 90's korean epiphone les paul custom? This was my first guitar I bought when I was about 14. I know its an >epiphone but it sounds pretty damn sweet through a good amp, they dont make them like they used to.
I brought it to a luthier to get it set up and the electronics refurbished and I was going to give it some upgrades but he recommended leaving it like it is.

They're a lot better than they used to be. I've seen some old used ones that look like pure garbage. But the modern ones are high quality, in the $1,500 range. Better than those tribute models but not quite up to the Classics or Standards.

Basically, if you're strapped for cash but don't want to sink as low as a tribute or Epiphone then Studio isn't a bad option. Though the snobs will still give you shit.

Ignore those assholes anon, it's a solid purchase. Not everyone can afford a fucking Standard or Custom LP and that's fine. At least it's not an Epiphone and that gold finish looks good on anything.

I had a chance to play some of those tribute models. IMO they sound great, maybe not as solid as a Standard but much better than an Epi. Only major problem I noticed was that I couldn't keep it in tune for very long. Might have just been the demo I was playing though.

Nice. I saw those were going for 50% off list that day.

pro tip on LPs: loosen the strings and pull them out of the nut, take pencil and rub some graphite in each slot, put strings back on. This will help stop the D and G from binding in the nut from the sharp angle. Gibson could fix this easily but they refuse.

The only musicians who aren't elitist snobs, especially about low end guitars like Squires and Epiphones, are shitty and/or uneducated ones.

>>
>>69322063
Not him but drummers have to deal with the most bullshit in the small gig circuit. Engineers always rush your set-up and sound check at the last minute no matter how early you show up, you have to figure out your dynamics as you perform and sometimes have to share a kit with other acts with no down time to adjust.

Hecklers can fuck off.
>>
>>69321981
>>69322103
I think he's an underrated blues guitarist. It's a shame he's better known for all those shitty pop songs. The John Mayer Trio stuff is his best work and a big reason I wanted to pick up guitar. That first song you posted is one of the first I learned to play, obviously not as well though.
>>
>>69322063

Drum tuning is completely subjective, there is no right or wrong way and you are never out of tune. I know how to tune drums, my main two snares are a metal one which I tune up high to have bell like resonance and the other is actually a marching snare drum which is louder than a shotgun and also with the same resonance tuning, to give you an idea take a look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9isCTqcfOw#t=17s
Both of them are that way for deliberately pissing people off.
>>
>>69322223

You are right, this is bullshit. You have to play somebodies shitty entry level kit most time OR set up your own kit, and when you start getting into the music it sounds totally different from just giving the individual drums a few lackluster hits as you zone out while the guy fiddles with his sliders.
>>
>>69322183
Saying your tuning is shit = criticism. If he wasn't so sensitive/arrogant he might have actually tuned his snare between songs.

If this was at all true then people would just sell their Gibsons for thousands of dollars and buy an Epiphone for less than a grand.

In reality Epiphone owners are guitarists who really really wanted that beautiful Les Paul but didn't have the patience to save up so they splurged on a mediocre low end guitar. On the surface they're happy, but every time they look at that headstock and see "Epiphone" instead of "Gibson" it eats away at their soul, slowly but surely, until they go online and make up reasons to justify their purchase.

How is the Tall Font Russian on bass? Been wanting one for a while to retire my 6 screw black Russian Muff plus been wanting something smaller
>>

>get a grand handed to you and using it to buy a shredder meme guitar
>>
Guys I need to play bass with a pick because of the style I'm playing. How do I mute the strings with a pick so that the other strings don't ring out?
>>
>>69325476
You don't mute with a pick, you use a mixture of the fleshy part of your right hand and your fretting fingers
>>
>>69325417
Well I'm a shredder
>>
>>69325998
Did you get an A7x signature? One of my friends from high school had one.
>>
>>69315606
just got back from working, can't wait for my next check cause then i can go buy myself a guitar i've been saving up for a long time now (fender jaguar hh). It's one of the only things i've been looking forward to for a long time.

Are standard Squier Strats acceptable babbies first guitar?
>>
>>69326388
Yup. I have a Squier Affinity Tele and it's really noice. You'll be fine and happy with that m8
>>
>>69326388
Yup, they're very common for beginners and from what I've seen they tend to last longer than other cheap beginner guitars, if they're taken well care of that is.

been playing guitar for about four months and want to get my second electric

I like this one

http://www.musicgoroundstockton.com/p/556938/used-squier-mustang-electric-guitar-white?gclid=CIHYjruexdACFZBefgodA0gGmQ

any reason not to?
>>
>>69326170
Nice man! I've been looking at the exact same guitar for a while myself. Still at least a few months away from being able to get it though. What color are you getting?
>>
>schecter
Garbage
>>
>>69326250
That's actually really nice looking. I would change the pickups though. I'm not really familiar with Schecters desu. A buddy of mine got one cheap and it had the coil tapping option which was nice but I thought it sounded awful. It was probably just his settings though. He turned treble up and bass and mids down for everything.
>>
>>69327215
>le scooped miss are evil meme

When will we outgrow this?
>>
>>69324096
Great octavbre though.
>>
>>69327276
Eh, I don't like completely scooped mids, seems silly to me, but I do kind of get it. It was more because he had his bass so low that bothered me. His typical settings were Bass: 2-3 Treble:1 and Treble:7-8

Sounded like horse shit. He also played a Line 6 amp but traded it in for an Egnater, not familiar with them either but didn't think it improved his tone much.

It was very likely just him and his settings but it made me wary of both Schecters and Egnaters. I already knew Line 6 was no good, for me anyway.
>>
>>69327338
meant to say Mids:1
>>
>>69325014
Its a bad decal too, its supposed to look like the late 70s Jazzmaster decal and its not too good at it

the cheesy walnut insert truss rod hole is a Squier thing
>>
>>69327338
of for fucks sake. mid scoop, which you should never do when playing bass with people because it'll sound terrible and be barely audible in the mix anyway, is like this: treble 5-6 mid 3-4 bass 4-6. It's a shallow dip. And really only useful for headphone practice and maybe some recording applications.
>>
>>69327565
acutally, its not even a Squier, its a even cheesier Chinese aliexpress neck, Squiers don't have dual string trees, that neck head does like what you find on those bad $100 jazzmaster copies
>>
>>69327579
You're not wrong. But there's a whole generation (maybe 2 now?) of players who were told that getting rid of your mids makes you sound HEAVIER!

It's not uncommon to see people with their mids below 4 or even all the way down. I've even seen several youtube videos showing this. If some kid who's new at guitar looks up "How to sound heavy" chances are he'll find some BS article telling him to cut his mids.

Fortunately for everyone who does this there seems to be 2 or more people saying not to.
>>
>>69327672
>told that getting rid of your mids makes you sound HEAVIER!

Who cares. Let the metalfags sound like shit. They're a dying breed anyway. Unfortunately they're the only reason most guitar shops stay in business these days.

So let them buy their epiphones and line 6 amps and scoop the mids. Whatever makes them happy.
>>
>>69327736
>hating on metal
>thinking metal is dying
>hating on line6

This must be bait.
>>
>>69327133
Sunburst! I really like the white but dat sunburst is my weakness.
>>
What's the deal with using guitar pedals for a bass? Would it fuck the pedal up or anything?
>>
>>69328256
it may not do so well with tracking or affecting frequencies its not designed to.
>>
>>69327276
It sounds fine to me, but adding mids gives a fuller, thicker sound. I usually just boost bass and treble... maybe turn the mids down slightly. But more of bass and treble boost to get the "metal" sound
>>
>>69328309
Ok, i figured. I mean put a bass thru an old hm-2 to screw around... it takes a lot of the punch away. I just dont think I'd ever buy a bass dist pedal, cuz i only got the bass to fuck around with, and I'd spend the $ elsewhere.
>>
>>69328425
O and i understand my question was would it fuck the pedal up, then i said i already did it.. but i think the hm2 kinda sounds like crap anyway, so i didnt really care if it broke
>>
Do any of you own a michael kelly guitar??
>>
>>69328425
>>69328486
yeah, i doubt it would break anything anyway. my answer was just a guess btw.
>>69328533
no, but ive been looking at the mod shop series big time; not sure yet. love the ebony topped t style.
>>
Your opinion about floyd rose - Yay, Nay, or "It depends"?
>>
Recommend me a decent amp+guitar setup. My budget is $600-$700. Should I buy a $500 guitar and $200 amp? or a $350 guitar and $350 amp, which is more important?

I prefer having one. It's like buying a car with no a/c. You don't need it, but it's useful when you want it. However, i have a guitar without one, to change tunings more easily. Eventually i got a more guitars, with floyds, and just tune them all differently and leave them like that.

I search for "Les Paul" and limited the price range to 300$~600$

There are alot of epiphones here but not all of them are - you can actually buy a les paul standard at this price. I hope this is helpful.

So I bought a secondhand Fender in fantastic shape except I need new strings. Anything I should know about strings and replacing them? Also could anyone recommend me a good looper pedal on the cheaper end?

do you set the guitar on your leg or in between them?

yes

Why don't more guitar have maple fretboards, looks way better than rosewood

Wish I knew.
Far too often I find myself thinking "this guitar would look a lot better with a maple fretboard".

>>
>>69328168
Same here. It's a beautiful guitar regardless but the sunburst is unbelievable. My only concern is that it might not have the classic jaguar tone with the humbuckers. I've never had a coil tapping guitar so I'm not sure what that's like exactly
>>

what you guys think?
I know it's kinda sloppy, but just about the progression in general
>>
>>69323831
over the past 4 years they've definitely picked up QC which has lead to a more solid product for the buck, in saying that if you can get your hands on a "Orville","Orville by Gibson" or a Epiphone Elitist you will 9/10 have a great guitar that can surpass even a well made Gibson of a fraction of the price.
