You really need that wide flat fretboard and nylon strings if youre going to play intermediate or harder classical pieces.

Fingerstyle on an acoustic works fine though, check out leo kottke for an idea of what you can pull of in the folk fingerstyle realm

Not sure if right thread for this.

But what does /mu/ think of stick dulcimers like the Strumstick?

Diatomic instrument.

Theres also a seagull version called the Merlin which is only one octave.

Are these fun to jam on with buddies?

Are the official brand ones worth it or should I look for smaller sellers? (Or the merlin which has 4 strings. (One is doubled like mando))

a solidbody? Whats the point? You need proper classical form to comfortably play neck like that.

Just get a piezo bridge or something and stick it on any old nylon string guitar

not really...maybe for sludgey stuff
they get pretty muddy with lots of gain
sound really good clean and slightly overdriven

they are not really chimey though, they have heavy mids and less treble and bass with a slow attack, jangley guitars usually have pickups that are pretty scooped or have strong upper mids and highs with a strong attack

Welp. Just pulled the trigger on a P90. They're from GFS so they're cheap tho. I'll give them a whirl, if I don't like them I'll purchase some sort of PAF.

I currently have a Custom 5 which is scooped and gets muddy with distortion. I just needed something with lower output for better cleans and less mud when running distortion pedals. They should be fine for memegaze, at least until I get a Mememaster.

I figure if they can do that at such a young age, I can at least make my own mark in the history of guitar music (as small as it may be)

Ibanez is a pretty solid company. You get a better guitar at a lower price point compared to some other companies. They make more than metal guitars, they make good semi hollows and great basses. I just bought an sr505 and it's so versatile I can't believe it, plays like butter too.

Their sub $200 stuff is pretty awful though, and they made meme machines more accessible, but nobody is perfect.

This question goes out to all of you.

How do you go about playing arpeggios and chords? How do you structure your chords and arpeggios on the fretboard? What intervals and voicings do you use?

There's more than just a few ways to play the notes A C E. By ways I mean shapes. Shapes are everything. Unless you don't make stuff up off the top of your head.
>>
>>69290759
I have a Jackson guitar and not only do I love it very much, I think it's the best guitar I've ever played aside from the Gretch White Falcon. 24 frets. Thin and wide neck. Double EMG humbucking pickups. Floyd Rose locking tremolo system (well intonated and set up because I know what I'm doing ((and read the instructions))) It just plays very well. It's set up exactly how I want a guitar to be set up. The tones I get are rad too. Bridge pickup gets a treble based tone and the beck gets a bass based tone. Well rounded.

However... I've played some very shitty Jackson guitars. Pretty much all guitars under $700 are just beginner guitars made for someone who isn't ready to spend money on something they've studied.
>>
Asked before, but:

Micro Dark Terror, or save up for the Dark Terror? I'd go for the Tiny but no effects loop is kinda putting me off. No idea how much I'd even use effects that need the loop when I play distorted though. I do love to play clean, but I'd also love to get to Sunn O))) and Boris levels of noise/distortion.
>>
>>69288836
>more watts = better
>get a better guitar instead of upgrading your amp

I would slap myself if I went back in time. Played an American Standard Strat through a Spider II for way too long. Wish I had just gone for a MIM and the AC15 I have now.

Worked out pretty well now with good guitars and a good amp, but could have had a better sound for much longer if I had been sensible years ago
>>
Worth it getting a proper tube amp when playing in an apartment?
>>
>>69291082
Maybe Boss RC20/RC30 but it has unnecessary effects too imho
>>
>>69291833

Yes, just don't go crazy with the wattage and you will be fine. Sold my HT stage 60 when I moved into a flat as it was totally pointless and unusable.

Obviously you won't be able to gun it, but you can put an overdrive pedal through the front end and get a really good sound at a manageable volume. You get very low wattage ones for this purpose as well if you don't plan on gigging it, but 10 - 15w ones seem to be a good compromise and can handle small gigs too. Any bigger gigs and you can just mic it up.
>>

If you're just beginning that's not bad. Good deal on it that's for sure. Personally I would suggest beginning with a Squire strat... not that they're amazing but they're a solid instrument for how cheap they are.

That being said I've never played an Epiphone LP Special, but assuming they're of roughly the same quality as a Squire then you should be ok.

The Epiphone equivalent of the Squire Strat would be an Ep Les Paul 100 which are about double the price. The Epiphone Les Paul Specials are pure garbage, even for a beginner.

There's no real reason to not spend a few extra bucks for a Squire. They're not amazing by any means, but they're not as laughable.

Oh, and if you really just want a Les Paul model then just put out the extra money for the Les Paul 100.

I've never had ernies rust on me, I do notice my bass starts to sound dead quicker with them then d'addarios, but on guitar they never gave me an issue. I broke a string once since 2006 when I was a dumb 16 year old in a punk band(lol down stroke like you're using a hammer), so 10 years. It broke during a gig too, when we were doing an intense cover of Superstition, I was playing a solo and dug into the d string too much and it went. My fault, they were old strings, but I don't like changing strings the day of a gig, we played 2 sets in a row 4 days straight, it was on day 3 during the first set. I got it changed, stretched, and tuned and caught the next song by the first chorus. Didn't have to really tune it for the next 2 sets, stayed in line with the rest of the strings.

Tl;Dr I never had a problem with ernie balls that wasn't my fault.

>>
>>69292712

Not that anon, but I agree that MIJ are a meme. They are very good, but a meme.

Not enough of a step up from the MIM to warrant the cost, and even then the MIM are seriously good these days. They aren't as good as the American Standards either, don't play as well and don't sound as good. Haven't played an American Special so couldn't comment on them.

People who say the MIJ "blow the MIA guitars out the water" are talking total rubbish.

I fell for all of those. Still falling fall for the first two actually. Jackson and Ibanez are both solid, and good for more than just Metal. Though I tend to play Fender's more now.

Nothing wrong with using tabs, but it's definitely important to start with chords. IMO musical notation isn't necessary if you just want to be a Rock musician.
