Is the Cure good? They seem like a wimpier Joy Division making Jangle pop love songs
>>
yeah they're pretty good
>>
This is not even a fair comparison.

First off, Joy Division is a pussy version of Bauhaus.

Second, Robert Smith was the goth songbird of the 80's. Seriously great pop songwriter, and his music will continue to and has stood the test of time.
>>
>>69247423
This. Joy Division is for pleb idiots who can't think for themselves. A wimpier version of Joy Division would be like The Wiggles or something, it's that weak. The Cure is a thousand times better.
>>
>>69247586
This is a tryhard post
>>
>>69247391
There are Joy Division songs that are higher accomplishments and just better songs than anything The Cure ever did, but I probably enjoy Disintegration more than any Joy Division album

So, take that as you will

Pornography [Fiction, 1982]

Why so glum, little boy? You got your contract and your synthesizers. Cheer up. Trust me, kiddo. It'll pass. C+

Christgau had a hateboner for British synthpop bands for some reason.
>>
>>69249124
he has a hateboner for anything that is not punk, or straightforward in terms of instrumentation or time signatures

hence his heavy dislike of prog or any form of slight experimentation
>>
>>69249124
I don't blame him, it's all cheesy melodies fronted by British guys that can't sing

That said I love New Order
>>
>>69250112
He generally liked later Cure albums, just not Pornography.

Turn On the Bright Lights [Matador, 2002]

They bitch because everybody compares them to Joy Division, and they're right. It's way too kind, and I say that as someone who thanks Ian Curtis for making New Order possible. Joy Division struggled against depression rather than flaunting it, much less wearing it like a designer suit. What's truly depressing is that, just as the hairy behemoths of the grunge generation looked back to the AOR metal they immersed in as teens, these fops tweak the nostalgia of young adults who cherish indistinct memories of much worse bands than Joy Division, every one of them English--Bauhaus, Ultravox, Visage, Spandau Ballet, Tears for Fears. At a critical moment in consciousness they exemplify and counsel disengagement, self-seeking, a luxurious cynicism. Says certified British subject Peter Banks: "Emotions are standard and boring. I'd like to find another way to live." That's thinking either big or very small. C+

I don't like those bands either desu.

Songs from the Big Chair [Mercury, 1985]

Never one to pay much mind to the plaints of English lads with synthesizers, I got duly annoyed at the surface and let it go at that. Imagine my surprise when I discerned substance underneath--uncommon command of guitar and piano, Baker Street sax, synthesizers more jagged than is deemed mete by the arbiters of dance-pop accessibility. Even found a lyric that went "We are paid by those who live by our mistakes," not bad at all. Yet in the end the surface is still annoying--not so much pretentious as portentous, promising a depth and drama English lads have been falling short on since the dawn of progressive rock. B

I think he's saying that most prog bands are trying stuff that's way over their heads since most pop musicians have no training in musical composition or theory, so they just end up sounding cheesy.
>>
>>69247391
They're barely comparable save for both being progenitor bands who started and influenced the gothic rock genre.

Robert Smith's voice is top 10 in pop imo.

Early Cure is post punk, later albums are more alternative rock.
>>
>>69252010
Yeah, after making this I've listened to a bit more of them (including this song) and I've changed my opinion
>>
>>69247391
I cant really say i enjoy gothic rock right now but Robert smith seems like a lovable guy. I also like their hits

>The Cure is a wimpier Joy Division

Far from it. Listen to Seventeen Seconds, Faith, and Pornography - Robert had way different musical ideas than Ian and the boys. Robert Smith had also been playing with Siouxie and the Banshees in the late 70's and I think there is some strange psychedelic influence, especially in the drone-feeling Pornography era.

Lol. You have made a mistake, pathetic millenial leech of the subculture that you are. Pro tip: Goth isn't dressing in all black, being an edgy asshole to your parents and owning Christian Death on Vinyl.

>Let's Go To Bed
>Disintegration, of course
Never hate on Pictures on You again boyo.
>>
>>69251756
I don't think there's a chart but
Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography were their original goth trilogy which was later changed to Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers.

For pop shit check out Three Imaginary Boys, The Head On The Door and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me.

The Top is kind of experimental and psychedelic if you're into that.

My personal top 3 of theirs is Pornography, Japanese Whispers and Disintegration.
Charlotte Sometimes is arguably their best song though

Friday I'm In Love
Pornography

>First off, Joy Division is a pussy version of Bauhaus.
This doesn't make sense since Joy Division came before Bauhaus, and Bauhaus were obviously heavily inspired by Joy Division. Peter Murphy would call you a cunt for even suggesting such garbage nonsense.
