Hated reggae for my entire life on the assumption that it all sounded like Bob Marley and all that diet Bob Marley runoff that the 80s loved to make novelty hits.

Someone recently suggested I listen to this and despite going into it with an enormous level of skepticism I'm pretty sure it's the greatest fucking album I have ever heard.

So I have three questions; First, why didn't anyone tell me reggae was good? Second, why has the world made only the worst examples of the genre popular? Third, anything else I should check out?
>>
Because you're a dumb kike and everyone hates you, you should check out the Brausebad

OP, I would recommend Ranking Dread as an artist, especially his song Trouble Natty Dread.

Ska is white people reggae, try The Slackers, theyve got a couple good albums, Redlight might be the best.

If you like electronic music try Thievery Corporation - Radio Retaliation, its great.

Hope my post helped, glad yoir taste broadened

No you are not

Heart of the Congos is wonderful.

It was produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry in his signature ragged style. He also produced and wrote a shitload of albums with his house band, The Upsetters. I highly recommend the following albums by him:

Roast Fish, Collie Weed & Cornbread
Super Ape
Return of the Super Ape
Blackboard Jungle
Cloak and Dagger
>>
>>69227922
Exuma's pretty good, I'd start with Exuma II

Baal is a fuckin masterpiece
>>
Would reggae fall under the banner of folk music?
>>
>>69230368
Maybe roots reggae, but only in the way Bob Dylan falls under the folk music banner. It isn't traditional folk, and some of the subgenres are closer to edm or top 40.

Like Pet Sounds.

...wait.
>>
>>69227922
Because American style reggae appealed to white people
>>
>>69233099
Nowhere near as popular as major beatles albums or songs. To add to what I said /mu/ tends to prefer the similar and lesser known versions of things

This hipster fuckery happened around 2010 when mu became indie and not about metal

You're right, OP. That is the greatest album of all time. It's not going to get better. I can't believe it's not mucore. Or maybe it's too good to be mucore? I dunno

Reggae and Calypso/Soca are wonderful genres of music. Reggae and Calypso are the Caribbean equivalent of what folk music is to the US in a sense.

I grew up with Calypso/Soca being from Trinidad it's all some seriously wonderful stuff.
>>
>>69233123
Reggae appeals to white people because "Woaah dude chill I can smoke weed to this!"

Dancehall appeals to white people because
"Woaah I can dance off rhythm to this and it won't matter because everyone is high or drunk!"
>>
>>69227922
OP, I am so glad that you took the time to expand beyond your bubble and listen to one of my favorite albums too. I'm proud of you. Just out of curiosity, which song on the album is your favorite? I like all of them to varying degrees, but I would have to say that Sodom and Gomorrow is my personal jam.

Something I strongly dislike is that reggae and Caribbean music in general are never discussed on this board, and when they are talked about, they're usually disparaged or unfairly generalized and discarded. Good on you for breaking yourself of that.

Anyway, here are some essentials from across genres/subgenres if you're curious for more.

Fisherman though I might be biased since, as the first track, it was the first wow moment I had with the album. I'll listen to it a few more times before I make an objective choice.

Thanks for your recommendations, though.
>>
>>69234821
Of course. Fisherman is a pretty great one, as well as Open Up The Gates especially; it's so powerful that sometimes I almost tear up when listening to it.

If you're ever in the mood to discover new stuff, I'll link my RYM page. Most of my albums are reggae/dub with some older Jamaican music thrown in.

I'm in the mood right now. Right now I'm going through the charts for reggae, deejay, ska, dancehall, dub and calypso.
>>
>>69234858
Excellent. You're in luck, because (without tooting my own horn), if anyone is qualified to share the joys of Jamaican music, I have tons of it to distribute. If you like, I can make you a mix full of songs from different genres that I feel you would appreciate. I'm versed in everything from mento to ragga. My Spotify also has some things that RYM doesn't list.

well, add the releases on RYM! it takes ~5 minutes for each…

I've got it linked above. PrincePikachusif is my handle. My collection is relatively meager, but I just recently started getting into having physical music seriously.

Not to mention, I just remembered some favorites of mine I'd like to impart to you.

Fair enough. I suppose I don't trust myself enough to get all the information in correctly, kek. I'll see what I can do.

great job OP yeah Reggae is one of my favourite genres too! Heart of the Congos, Dadawah, Lee Scratch Perry, Exuma, the list could go on...

Discogs have a larger database for obscure releases, but since you have actually physical albums, it's even better.
Do you know the serie 'V.A. - London Is The Place For Me'? these are the only calypso-related albums I have: really fun stuff!
>>
>>69235002
OP's post was literally about how he was just getting into the genre. With that in mind what point are you trying to make, exactly?
>>
>>69235003
I've been meaning to get acquainted with Discogs. With that in mind, I'll do so today, thank you. And no, I'm afraid that I am not familiar with this series. I will definitely check it out, though. Some of my favorite calypso comes from Lord Kitchener, by the way.

Had a similar experience to OP's with him. Didn't really think about listening to Reggae until I bought Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt on a whim.

Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt is great. Song-wise, some personal favorites from him of mine include Soldier Take Over, Sensimilla, Herbman Smuggling, and Mr. Chin.
