I've laughed off prog as boring wank about wizards my whole life, but now I've found this album. And it's good, really good. The second half isn't that great but the title track is one of the greatest things I've ever heard. I went back and listened to the two previous Yes albums and there was nothing of a similar quality, so where do I go next? Does prog have anything else to offer?
>>
>>69188850
>where do I go next
Nowhere. You stay there and listen to it again because you didn't get the memo that Siberian Khatru is a total bop.
>>
>>69188850
>I went back and listened to the two previous Yes albums and there was nothing of a similar quality

>Not liking Heart of the Sunrise and South Side of the Sky

I've listened to the whole thing end to end 20+ times over the past week. I don't think the second half is bad but I don't enjoy it anywhere near as much as the first.
>>
Listen to Drama, it's one of their best albums

It combines new wave with prog in an interesting way
>>
>>69188971
I like them but there's an order of magnitude between them and the emotions that Close to the Edge drags up.

>>69188980
Haven't listened to King Crimson since 2012. I guess I'll give them another try, I did like that riff on Red.
>>
>>69188850
Close to the edge is probably the best album to get into prog. Here's a list of albums split into old prog and 'new' prog, because they sound quite a bit different.

Classic Prog:
Fragile - Yes
ITCOTCK - King Crimson
Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull
Trilogy - ELP

Modern Prog:
The Dark Third - Pure Reason Revolution
Deadwing - Porcupine Tree
Storm Corrosion - Storm Corrosion
Weather Systems - Anathema
Magnolia - The Pineapple Thief
>>
Lark's Tongues in Aspic is probably KC's toughest album to get into, but once you get used to the oddness of it I'd easily say it's their best album, better than Red or ITCOTCK.

>>69188850
Fragile is overrated IMO, but a lot of the albums after Close to the Edge are great as well. The track Awaken off of Going for the One is particularly awesome.
>>
>>69188971
Oh shit nvm South Side of the Sky is pretty incredible

Van der Graaf in general is bit too edgy anyway

>>
>>69189929
I like krautrock but I don't really consider it prog.
>>
>>69189995
Perhaps I should have said too angsty instead of edgy. KC was always good at hitting the perfect level of edginess without rubbing the wrong way, but sometimes Van der Graaf sounds almost whiney.

Caravan is based though.
>>
>>69189995
I remember listening to and enjoying Rock Bottom but I'm not familiar with anything else from the scene.

Ok and Heart of Sunrise is great too idk how I missed this firdt time around.

Genesis. Do it. Don't be a pussy.
>>
I know this is really obvious but I love them so much I gotta mention Pink Floyd

Start with Animals and work backwards until Dark Side, if you didn't like those then try their debut and The Wall. Yeah they're one of the best selling bands of all time but they still deserve a fair listen, just like the rest of the stuff that's been posted.

also if you aren't into any of this stuff try out Rock in Oposition, which is basically just very "avant-garde" art rock

there's a lot of shitty prog but the best prog is some of the best rock music to ever be made.
>>
>>69190003
It's a little long-winded at parts, but by and large it's top quality. You really do have to listen to it all in one sitting though, as it's more like a symphony or some other such large work than an album, in that the 4 tracks are really 4 movements of one piece. The same themes and motifs flow in and out thoughout all the tracks. I like to put it on when I'm doing some boring work or playing strategy games, stuff like that.
>>
>>69188850
>I went back and listened to the two previous Yes albums and there was nothing of a similar quality
Really? Everything on Fragile excluding Cans and Brahms is great.
>>
>>69190064
This, both before and after the switch.
>>
>>69190023
How isn't this prog?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDcvKyZqdyw

>>69189999
Checked.
>>
>>69190023
I can see why some people don't, but krautrock is harder to pin down than just calling it psychedelic or avant-garde. There's a lot of similarity in terms of prog and krautrock both having songs that cycle through different movements.
One could argue for example that Can and Yes had a similar approach to making music. They both wanted to achieve a sort of zen quality, and they went about this by not really having a "lead" in as much as each instrument was used as a "voice".

>>
>>69190064
I can't get in to any Genesis after Gabriel leaves, and I want to so bad.
>>
>>69190023
I'd argue that Krautrock is a sub-genre of Prog, like Symphonic Prog, or Neo-Prog
>>
>>69190099
I've heard it described as a mural, and each side is a different wall.
>>
>>69190126
Also, Can called their own music progressive rock.

Check out the 70's Italian prog scene, it spawned many great,
original sounding bands. Triana is one of my favs:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdZhe8lC0IM

>>69189149
Oh yes, Lark's Tongues is my favourite KC album too.
>>69189762
Probably my favourite Camel album if I had to choose (which is almost impossible). I have to mention Rain Dances.
It's got a bit of a more polished sound but it's an amazing album too.
Such a comforting quality to the songs.
>>
>>69190374
Oops, just realised that Triana are from Spain...
Oh well, Premiata Forneria Marconi is a great prog band from Italy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-dVbfiaSME

>>69190372
A lot of that album, particularly The Ancient reminds me of Herbie Hancock's "prog" albums Crossings and Sextant.

Hearing this for the first time and really digging it. What else do these guys have? Or who else is in the Canterbury Scene? I tried listening to Flying Teapot, but that weirded me out.

>>69190650
The two Gong albums that follow Flying Teapot are really quite good.
Definitely listen to the first three Soft Machine albums too.

>Soft Machine
Their first two albums are like a Jazzy, British, Freak Out era, Mothers of Invention. Then with their third album, titled Third, they went even more Jazzy. (Don't like the first track of Third deter you from listening to the rest of it.)
